Effects of vacuum-assisted closure and Drotrecogin alpha on inflammatory markers in severe acute pancreatitis

In severe acute pancreatitis (sAP) inflammatory processes foster necrosis, cellular lysis and liberation of vasoactive substances associated with multiple organ failure. The effects of vacuum-assisted closure and Drotrecogin alpha on inflammatory cytokines were evaluated in sAP patients with infected necrosis. Methods: Forty-six patients were included in three groups: Group 1, necrosectomy and abdominal cavity washing;Group 2, necrosectomy plus vacuum-assisted closure (VAC), and Group 3, necrossectomy plus VAC plus Drotrecogin alpha. Immunoreactive IL-32, TnF-α, IL-6, TGF-β and IL-2 cytokines were quantified with ELIsA method. Results: IL-32 was significantly increased in all patients, predominantly the non-survivor of Group 3 (p 0.0001). Group 2 maintained increased IL-32 levels throughout. Peak TnF-α was observed in non-survivors of Groups 1 and 2, with a frank tendency to decrease in Group 3. The IL-6 was increased, sustained throughout the study, peaking at the onset in non-survivors. At the end IL-6 tended to diminish, predominantly in survivors. TnF-α and IL-6 were significantly increased on hospitalization, with a maximum peak in non-survivors of all groups. Initial values of TGF-β were significantly increased in survivors of the three groups, and were significantly diminished in non-survivors;affecting pancreas regeneration and favoring systemic inflammation, with possible multiple-organ repercussions. IL-2 levels were elevated, predominantly in non-survivors of Group 1. There was positive correlation between the increase IL-32 and TnF-α, and negative correlation between the increase in TnF-α and decrease in TGF-β;and, a tendency for negative correlation between the IL-2 increased and TGF-β levels. Conclusion: We found a generalized, sustained inflammatory state that fosters a torpid outcome in sAP patients.

Mathematical modeling of anaerobic digestion is a powerful tool to predict gas yields and optimize the *** Anaerobic Digestion Model no.1(ADM1)is a widely implemented model for this ***,modeling full-scale biogas plants is challenging due to the extensive substrate and parameter characterization *** study describes the modification of the ADM1 through a simplification of individual process phases,characteristic components and required ***,the ability of the simplified model to simulate the co-digestion of grass silage and cattle slurry was evaluated using data from a full-scale biogas *** impacts of substrate composition(crude carbohydrate,protein and lipid concentration)and variability of carbohydrate degradability on simulation results were assessed to identify the most influential *** indicated that the simplified version was able to depict biogas and biomethane production with average model efficiencies,according to the nash-sutcliffe efficiency(nsE)coefficient,of 0.70 and 0.67,respectively,and was comparable to the original ADM1(average model efficiencies of 0.71 and 0.63,respectively).The variability of crude carbohydrate,protein and lipid concentration did not significantly impact biogas and biomethane output for the data sets *** contrast,carbohydrate degradability seemed to explain much more of the variability in the biogas and methane ***,the application of simplified models provides a reliable basis for the process simulation and optimization of full-scale agricultural biogas plants.

Hypoxic and temporal variation in the endocrine disrupting toxicity of perfluorobutanesulfonate in marine medaka(Oryzias melastigma)

Perfluorobutanesulfonate(PFBs)is an emerging pollutant capable of potently disrupting the sex and thyroid endocrine systems of ***,the hypoxic and temporal variation in PFBs endocrine disrupting toxicity remain largely *** the present study,adult marine medaka were exposed to environmentally realistic concentrations of PFBs(0 and 10μg/L)under normoxia or hypoxia conditions for 7 days,aiming to explore the interactive behavior between PFBs and *** addition,PFBs singular exposure was extended till 21days under normoxia to elucidate the time-course progression in PFBs *** results showed that hypoxia inhibited the growth and caused the suspension of egg spawn regardless of PFBs *** regard to the sex endocrine system,7-day PFBs exposure led to an acute stimulation of transcriptional profiles in females,which,subsequently,recovered after the 21-day *** potency of hypoxia to disturb the sex hormones was much stronger than PFBs.A remarkable increase in estradiol concentration was noted in medaka blood after hypoxia *** in sex endocrinology of coexposed fish were largely determined by hypoxia,which drove the formation of an estrogenic *** further enhanced the endocrine disrupting effects of ***,the hepatic synthesis of vitellogenin and choriogenin,two commonly used sensitive biomarkers of estrogenic activity,failed to initiate in response to the estrogen *** to sex endocrine system,disturbances in thyroidal axis by PFBs or hypoxia were relatively ***,the present findings will advance our toxicological understanding about PFBs pollutant under the interference of hypoxia.

Tensor perturbations from bounce inflation scenario in f(Q)gravity

In this paper,we construct a bounce inflation cosmological scenario in the framework of the modified symmetric teleparallel gravity,namely f(Q)theory,and investigate the tensor perturbations *** is well-known,the tensor perturbations generated in the very early Universe(inflation and pre-inflation regions)can account for the primordial gravitational waves(PGWs)that are to be detected by the next generation of GW *** discuss the stability condition of the tensor perturbations in the bounce inflation process and investigate in detail the evolution of the perturbation *** general form of the tensor power spectrum is obtained both for large as well as small scale *** a result,we show both kinds of modes(short or long wavelength modes),and the tensor spectrum may get a positive tilt in the parametric range where the tensor perturbation proves to be stable—this interestingly hints an enhancement of gravitational waves’amplitude in the background of the f(Q)bounce-inflation ***,we study the LQC-like scenario as a specific case of our model,in which,the primordial tensor power spectrum turns out to be nearly scale-invariant on both small and large scales.

Realizing the full potential of ultrahigh-intensity lasers for particle and radiation generation will require multi-beam arrangements due to technology ***,we investigate how to optimize their coupling with solid ***,we show that overlapping two intense lasers in a mirror-like configuration onto a solid with a large preplasma can greatly improve the generation of hot electrons at the target front and ion acceleration at the target *** underlying mechanisms are analyzed through multidimensional particle-in-cell simulations,revealing that the self-induced magnetic fields driven by the two laser beams at the target front are susceptible to reconnection,which is one possible mechanism to boost electron *** addition,the resistive magnetic field generated during the transport of the hot electrons in the target bulk tends to improve their *** simulations also indicate that such effects can be further enhanced by overlapping more than two laser beams.

Given their numerous functional and architectural benefits,such as improved bearing capacity and increased resistance to elastic instability modes,cold-formed steel(CFs)built-up sections have become increasingly developed and used in recent years,particularly in the construction *** paper presents an analytical and numerical study of assembled CFs two single channel-shaped columns with different slenderness and configurations(backto-back,face-to-face,and box).These columns were joined by double-row rivets for the back-to-back and box configurations,whereas they were welded together for the face-to-face *** built-up columns were filled with ordinary concrete of good *** element models were applied,using ABAQUs software,to assess mechanical performance and study the influence of assembly techniques on the behavior of cold-formed columns under axial *** approaches based on Eurocode 3 and Eurocode 4 recommendations for un-filled and concrete-filled columns respectively were followed for the numerical analysis,and concrete confinement effects were also considered per American Concrete Institute(ACI)standards for face-to-face and box *** obtained results indicated a good correlation between the numerical results and the proposed analytical methodology which did not exceed 8%.The failure modes showed that the columns failed due to instabilities such as local and global buckling.
