Awareness and Practice on Household Solid Waste Management among the Community People

Household solid waste management is a major public health concern in the community people and closely related to daily human life. Community people can play a pivotal role in managing household solid waste. Objectives: This study was aimed to assess the awareness and practice of household solid waste management among the people living in the Mugda community in Dhaka. Methods: A descriptive co-relational study design was used. A total of 112 participants were selected with the convenience sampling technique. The data collection period was from July 2019 to June 2020. The data were collected from the participants by face-to-face interview through the door-to-door survey by using a structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed by using descriptive, Pearson correlation, t-test, and one-way ANOVA statistics. Results: Finding of the study shows that the mean awareness regarding household solid waste management was 7.96 (SD = 1.64) and the mean practice was 2.94 (SD = 1.35) respectively. It indicates that the awareness and practice of community people were at a moderate level. In bivariate analysis, it has been shown that training on household solid waste management (“P Conclusion: Overall awareness and practice level of household solid waste management were at a moderate level among the community people. Training on household solid waste management and recyclable waste management were statistically significantly correlated with household solid waste management. Policymakers can use this baseline data to make a strategy for increasing awareness among the community people.

Background: Patients of acute leukemia require careful assessment of liver function prior to start chemotherapy to determine which drugs may be appropriate or to be modified. Post chemotherapy abnormalities of liver function tests may be due to drugs or due to disease process itself. Objective: To evaluate the status of liver function in acute leukemia patients before and after induction chemotherapy. Methodology: This was a prospective cross-sectional study conducted in the Department of Biochemistry, Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka, Bangladesh from January 2017 to December 2017 on fifty (50) newly diagnosed patients of acute leukemia who fulfilled the selection criteria. Blood samples for serum total bilirubin, alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST) were collected before chemotherapy (Day 1) and after induction chemotherapy on 14th day and 30th day. Serum ALT and AST were measured by kinetic method and serum total bilirubin was measured by DMSO method. Data were analyzed and compared by statistical tests. Result: In this study, the mean level of serum total bilirubin before chemotherapy at day 1 was 0.89 ± 0.64 mg/dl. It was significantly (p Conclusion: It is concluded that serum total bilirubin, ALT and AST increase in response to chemotherapeutic drugs during treatment of acute leukemia.

Background: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at increased risk of morbidity & mortality. Educational interventions aimed at empowering patients are successful in chronic disease management including CKD. Objective: To explore the awareness regarding CKD among patients attending in a tertiary care hospital in Bangladesh. Methodology: This was a descriptive observational study, which includes 100 adult patients attending the department of Medicine in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka, Bangladesh from January 2013 to June 2013. Data were collected on a pre-tested questionnaire by face-to-face interview to investigate awareness toward: 1) basic knowledge of personal health;2) perceptions of factors increasing the risk of CKD;3) knowledge of therapies to slow CKD progression;4) perceptions of CKD increasing the risk of other medical conditions and 5) demographic information. Main outcome variables were demographic parameters, socio-economic status and awareness about chronic kidney disease. Data were analyzed and compared by statistical tests. Results: Almost one third (32.0%) respondents were in 3rd decade and male to female ratio was 1:1.5. Majority (43.0%) patients came from lower-middle income family. In all age groups, the majority (60%) respondents had low knowledge of CKD. Among the study population, 44.0% believe that smoking increases risk of CKD;42.0% believe that restricting salt intake reduces the progression of CKD;34.0% mention that CKD increases the risk for hypertension and 82.0% mention that renal transplantation is the treatment of choice in CKD. Among the participants, 32.8% had knowledge of increasing risk factor of CKD, 30.8% had knowledge of the method of slow progression of CKD, 30.3% had knowledge of conditions for increase risk of CKD and 41.7% respondent had knowledge of treatment of CKD. A Local Macroscopic Conservative(LoMaC)Low Rank Tensor Method with the Discontinuous Galerkin Method for the Vlasov Dynamics

In this paper,we propose a novel Local Macroscopic Conservative(LoMaC)low rank tensor method with discontinuous Galerkin(DG)discretization for the physical and phase spaces for simulating the Vlasov-Poisson(VP)system.The LoMaC property refers to the exact local conservation of macroscopic mass,momentum,and energy at the discrete level.The recently developed LoMaC low rank tensor algorithm(arXiv:2207.00518)simultaneously evolves the macroscopic conservation laws of mass,momentum,and energy using the kinetic flux vector splitting;then the LoMaC property is realized by projecting the low rank kinetic solution onto a subspace that shares the same macroscopic observables.This paper is a generalization of our previous work,but with DG discretization to take advantage of its compactness and flexibility in handling boundary conditions and its superior accuracy in the long term.The algorithm is developed in a similar fashion as that for a finite difference scheme,by observing that the DG method can be viewed equivalently in a nodal fashion.With the nodal DG method,assuming a tensorized computational grid,one will be able to(i)derive differentiation matrices for different nodal points based on a DG upwind discretization of transport terms,and(ii)define a weighted inner product space based on the nodal DG grid points.The algorithm can be extended to the high dimensional problems by hierarchical Tucker(HT)decomposition of solution tensors and a corresponding conservative projection algorithm.In a similar spirit,the algorithm can be extended to DG methods on nodal points of an unstructured mesh,or to other types of discretization,e.g.,the spectral method in velocity direction.Extensive numerical results are performed to showcase the efficacy of the method.

Background: Lupus nephritis (LN) is one of the most common presentations of Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Cyclophosphamide is one of the key immunosuppressive agents for the management of LN. Leflunomide is an isoxazole immunomodulatory agent has been shown to be safe, well tolerated and effective in SLE and LN. Objective: To evaluate the outcome of leflunomide in the treatment of proliferative lupus nephritis compared to cyclophosphamide. Method: This randomized clinical trial was held in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka, Bangladesh from July 2017 to August 2019. A total of 66 patients of proliferative lupus nephritis who need induction therapy were enrolled in this study. Leflunomide 100 mg/day for consecutive 3 days followed by 0.5 mg/kg/day in divided dose was given in experimental group (n = 32) and intravenous cyclophosphamide 0.5 gm/m2 of body surface area monthly pulse was given in control group (n = 34). All study patients have received prednisolone and hydroxychloroquine according to KDIGO guideline then followed up monthly for 6 months. Outcomes were measured at 6th month by renal function [S. Creatinine, 24 hours urinary total protein (24-hr UTP)], changes in SELENA-SLEDAI score, anti-ds DNA level, serum complement levels (serum C3 & C4), remission (complete/partial) and adverse drug responses. Result: In experimental group, remission occurred in 18 (56.3%) patients and no remission in 14 (43.7%) patients. In control group, remission occurred in 24 (70.6%) patients and no remission in 10 (29.4%) patients. Adverse effects in experimental group were: elevated ALT (6.3%), hypertension (12.5%), infection (6.3%) and amenorrhea (12.5%). In control group, adverse effects were mainly leucopenia (5.9%), infection (17.7%) and amenorrhea (29.4%). Synergistic enhancement of photocatalytic and antimicrobial efficacy of nitrogen and erbium co-doped ZnO nanoparticles

Using the chemical co-precipitation approach,a series of nitrogen(N) and erbium(Er) co-doped ZnO nanoparticles(NPs) was effectively synthesized to enhance the photocatalytic and antibacterial activities.Several characterization techniques,including X-ray diffraction(XRD),X-ray photoelectron spectro scopy(XPS),scanning electron microscopy(SEM),UV-vis,and photoluminescence(PL) spectroscopy,were carried out to validate the evaluated photocatalytic and antibacterial activities.XRD analysis confirms the pure wurtzite ZnO phase without the presence of any secondary phase.XPS analysis confirms the succe ssful incorporation of nitrogen and erbium into the ZnO matrix.The optical bandgap of ZnO calculated from UV-vis spectroscopy shows a redshift after Er-N co-doping,with the lowest bandgap of 3.215 eV calculated for Zn_(0.97)Er_(0.03)N_(0.01)O_(0.99) NPs.SEM images demonstrate the formation of nanorods after N-Er co-doping,followed by gradually increase d rod diameter and length after N-Er co-doping.Moreover,the photocatalytic activities of ZnO samples we re measured by their ability to facilitate the photodegradation of Rhodamine B under UV irradiation.ZnO with 1 mol% N doping exhibits 88% photodegradation of RhB under UV light within 360 min,and the photodegradation and antibacterial activity are greatly improved with Er co-doping.In fact,3 mol% Er-1 mol% N doped ZnO NPs demonstrate the highest photocatalytic activity,with approximately 96% degradation after 360 min,as well as superior antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus(Gram-positive bacteria) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa(Gram-negative bacteria) with the highest zone of inhibition(ZOI) of 16 nm,due to nanorod formation,increased reactive oxygen species(ROS),and decreased electron-hole recombination,as validated by SEM,XPS,and PL spectroscopy.

Multi-strain probiotics provide the most dependable approaches to improve health,immune response,and disease resistance in farmed fishes.In the present study,we examined the effects of multi-species probiotics on the survival,growth,immune response,and disease resistance of rohu(Labeo rohita)larvae.Newly hatched larvae from the day of first feeding(average weight of 0.003 g)were reared with multi-species probiotics having a combination of Bacillus subtilis(109 colony forming units(cfu)/mL)and Lactobacillus spp.(Lactobacillus plantarum,Lactobacillus buchneri-1011 cfu/mL)in water containing doses of 0(control-C),0.5 mL/L(treatment 1-T1),and 1.0 mL/L(treatment 2-T2)in triplicates for 90 days.After the experiment,a challenge test was performed to assess the fish's resistance to pathogenic Aeromonas veronii.Significantly higher survival was recorded in larvae of treated groups(87%in T2 and 79%in T1)compared to the control(62%).Significantly higher growth performance(weight gain and specific growth rate—SGR)was shown by the probiotic-treated larval groups compared to the control.Probiotic supplementation resulted in significantly higher counts of total viable colony(TVC)and lactic acid bacteria(LAB)in the intestine.Some immunological parameters(mucosal fold fattening,goblet cell abundance,expansion of lamina propria and enterocytes)of the gut were significantly better in probiotic-treated fish.The liver of treated fish showed irregular shape nuclei turning into regular shape and reducing spaces between the hepatic cells.Probiotic-treated fish had the highest post-challenge survival rate(90%)against A.veronii infection.The erythrocytes of challenged fish treated with probiotics had significantly lower frequencies of various nuclear and cellular abnormalities.These findings suggest that multi-species probiotic supplements could improve the survival,growth,health status,and immune response of rohu in the early stages of its development.

Deep learning based classification of sheep behaviour from accelerometer data with imbalance

Classification of sheep behaviour from a sequence of tri-axial accelerometer data has the potential to enhance sheep management.Sheep behaviour is inherently imbalanced(e.g.,more ruminating than walking)resulting in underperforming classification for the minority activities which hold importance.Existing works have not addressed class imbalance and use traditional machine learning techniques,e.g.,Random Forest(RF).We investigated Deep Learning(DL)models,namely,Long Short Term Memory(LSTM)and Bidirectional LSTM(BLSTM),appropriate for sequential data,from imbalanced data.Two data sets were collected in normal grazing conditions using jaw-mounted and earmounted sensors.Novel to this study,alongside typical single classes,e.g.,walking,depending on the behaviours,data samples were labelled with compound classes,e.g.,walking_-grazing.The number of steps a sheep performed in the observed 10 s time window was also recorded and incorporated in the models.We designed several multi-class classification studies with imbalance being addressed using synthetic data.DL models achieved superior performance to traditional ML models,especially with augmented data(e.g.,4-Class+Steps:LSTM 88.0%,RF 82.5%).DL methods showed superior generalisability on unseen sheep(i.e.,F1-score:BLSTM 0.84,LSTM 0.83,RF 0.65).LSTM,BLSTM and RF achieved sub-millisecond average inference time,making them suitable for real-time applications.The results demonstrate the effectiveness of DL models for sheep behaviour classification in grazing conditions.The results also demonstrate the DL techniques can generalise across different sheep.The study presents a strong foundation of the development of such models for real-time animal monitoring.

A survey of image-based computational learning techniques for frost detection in plants

Frost damage is one of the major concerns for crop growers as it can impact the growth of the plants and hence,yields.Early detection of frost can help farmers mitigating its impact.In the past,frost detection was a manual or visual process.Image-based techniques are increasingly being used to understand frost development in plants and automatic assessment of damage resulting from frost.This research presents a comprehensive survey of the state-of the-art methods applied to detect and analyse frost stress in plants.We identify three broad computational learning approaches i.e.,statistical,traditional machine learning and deep learning,applied to images to detect and analyse frost in plants.We propose a novel taxonomy to classify the existing studies based on several attributes.This taxonomy has been developed to classify the major characteristics of a significant body of published research.In this survey,we profile 80 relevant papers based on the proposed taxonomy.We thoroughly analyse and discuss the techniques used in the various approaches,i.e.,data acquisition,data preparation,feature extraction,computational learning,and evaluation.We summarise the current challenges and discuss the opportunities for future research and development in this area including in-field advanced artificial intelligence systems for real-time frost monitoring.

Cyclophilin D as a potential therapeutic target of liver ischemia/reperfusion injury by mediating crosstalk between apoptosis and autophagy

Background:Liver ischemia/reperfusion(I/R)injury is a complex and multifactorial pathophysiological process.It is well recognized that the membrane permeability transition pore(mPTP)opening of mitochondria plays a crucial role in cell death after I/R injury.Cyclophilin D(CypD)is a critical positive regulator of mPTP.However,the effect of CypD on the pathogenesis of liver I/R injury and whether CypD is a potential therapeutic target are still unclear.Methods:We constructed liver-specific CypD knockout and AAV8-peptidyl prolyl isomerase F(PPIF)overexpression mice.Then,a 70%liver I/R injury model was established in mice,with 90 min of ischemia and 6 h of reperfusion.The liver function was detected by the level of serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase(alanine transaminase)and glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase(aspartate aminotransferase),the liver damage score and degree of necrosis were measured by hematoxylin and eosin(H&E)staining of liver tissues.Reactive oxygen species(ROS)staining,apoptosis,and autophagy-related molecules were used to detect apoptosis and autophagy during liver I/R.Results:The liver-specific knockout of CypD alleviated necrosis and dysfunction in liver I/R injury,by reducing the excessive production of ROS,and inhibiting cell apoptosis and autophagy.On the contrary,overexpression of CypD exacerbated I/R-induced liver damage.Conclusion:We found that the downregulation of CypD expression alleviated liver I/R injury by reducing apoptosis and autophagy through caspase-3/Beclin1 crosstalk;in contrast,the upregulation of CypD expression aggravated liver I/R injury.Therefore,interfering with the expression of CypD seems to be a promising treatment for liver I/R injury.
