Geometric regulation of collective cell tangential ordering migration

Collective cell migration is a coordinated movement of multi-cell systems essential for various processes throughout life.The collective motions often occur under spatial restrictions,hallmarked by the collective rotation of epithelial cells confined in circular substrates.Here,we aim to explore how geometric shapes of confinement regulate this collective cell movement.We develop quantitative methods for cell velocity orientation analysis,and find that boundary cells exhibit stronger tangential ordering migration than inner cells in circular pattern.Furthermore,decreased tangential ordering movement capability of collective cells in triangular and square patterns are observed,due to the disturbance of cell motion at unsmooth corners of these patterns.On the other hand,the collective cell rotation is slightly affected by a convex defect of the circular pattern,while almost hindered with a concave defect,also resulting from different smoothness features of their boundaries.Numerical simulations employing cell Potts model well reproduce and extend experimental observations.Together,our results highlight the importance of boundary smoothness in the regulation of collective cell tangential ordering migration.

Use of the Lecompte procedure for ventriculoarterial connection abnormalities in infants and children with congenital heart diseases

Background The Lecompte （REV） procedure is used to correct abnormal ventriculoarterial connections in patients with congenital heart diseases; it avoids the need for an extracardiac conduit for pulmonary outflow tract reconstruction. The present study aimed to investigate effectiveness and criteria of the REV procedure in children with abnormal ventriculoarterial connections. Methods Thirty-eight children （mean age, （2.2±1.7） years; mean weight, （11.5±3.8） kg） with abnormal ventriculoarterial connections who had an REV procedure in our hospital from January 1998 to May 2006 were studied. Only 10 patients had the usual anteropostedor relationship of the two great arteries. The infundibular septum between the two semilunar valves was aggressively resected to enlarge it and construct a straighter left ventricular outflow tract and a wide tunnel between the ventricular septal defect （VSD） and the aorta. Eighteen cases had the original REV procedure; 20 had a modified REV procedure. Results All patients are alive; none developed severe complications. The postoperative right ventricular （RV） to left ventricular （LV） pressure ratio was 0.20-0.45. Five patients had RV dysfunction; 2 patients had a pressure gradient in the RV ventricular outlet of 30.0-34.5 mmHg; 3 cases had a 37.5-47.3 mmHg pressure difference in the RPA. All patients had an RV pressure less than half the systemic pressure. These gradients＇ magnitudes in all patients were consistent with the post-operative RV to LV pressure ratio （P 〈0.05）. During the follow-up （mean, （4.2±0.6） years）, 2 patients had an RPA pressure gradient of 24.0-29.3 mmHg which abated to less than 10 mmHg after two years. Conclusions The REV procedure provides satisfactory short- to medium-term results. It may be superior tO the Rastelli procedure for treating ventriculoarterial connection abnormalities; it allows early, complete anatomic repair and reduces the need for late re-operation, since no extracardiac conduit is needed. BACKGROUND Colorectal cavernous hemangioma is a rare vascular malformation resulting in recurrent lower gastrointestinal hemorrhage,and can be misinterpreted as colitis.Surgical resection is currently the mainstay of treatment,with an emphasis on sphincter preservation.CASE SUMMARY We present details of two young patients with a history of persistent hematochezia diagnosed with colorectal cavernous hemangioma by endoscopic ultrasound(EUS).Cavernous hemangioma was relieved by several EUS-guided lauromacrogol injections and the patients achieved favorable clinical prognosis.CONCLUSION Multiple sequential EUS-guided injections of lauromacrogol is a safe,effective,cost-efficient,and minimally invasive alternative for colorectal cavernous hemangioma.

The porous carbons have been prepared by chemical activation using commercial activated carbons as precursors and KOH as the chemical agent,and the MnOand MnO-loaded porous carbons have been synthesized via the hydrothermal method using the Mn(SO)·HO and(NH)SO as the reagents.The morphology and structure of the obtained materials are characterized by the SEM,XRD and N sorption.The obtained MnOexhibitsrod-like morphology,which can be indexed to a pure tetragonal phase[space group:P4/mnm]ofβ-MnO.The porous carbons and MnO-loaded porous carbons showa welldeveloped porosity.The electrochemical tests indicate that the samples have excellent performances for the supercapacitors.

Potato is the largest non-cereal food crop worldwide and ranked as the world＇s fourth most important food crop after rice, wheat, and maize. Potato is a vital food-security crop and substitute for cereal crop considering its high yield and great nutritive value. Therefore, by replacing wheat, rice or maize in traditional staple foods partly by potato, the nutritional value of traditional foods and the utilization of potato are expected to be improved. China is the largest potato producer worldwide in terms of either volume or area. However, majority of potatoes are consumed as fresh vegetables for cuisine, and the industrial processing rate is much lower than the global average. Thus, research and development for nutritional potato stable food suitable for the dietary habits of Chinese residents are of great significance. However, we still confronted plenty of constraints in the development of potato staple food. In order to develop potato staple food suitable for Chinese residents＇ dietary habit like noodles, Mantou（steamed bread）, rice and rice noodles, also to industrialize production of potato staple foods, some transformations need to be realized. Independent innovation is the only choice to realize the potato staple food processing and industrial development strategy on the technical level. Thus a lot of researches have been done to promote the development of potato staple food in China. Up to now, we already developed a series kinds of potato staple foods and some of these staple foods have already been widely promoted in Chinese markets.

Seasonal response of nitrogen exchange fluxes to crab disturbance at sediment-water interface in coastal tidal wetlands

Coastal wetlands are hotspots for nitrogen(N)cycling,and crab burrowing is known to transform N in intertidal marsh soils.However,the underlying mechanisms remain unclear.This study conducted field experiments and used indoor control test devices to investigate the seasonal response of nitrogen to crab disturbance at the sediment-water interface in coastal tidal flat wetlands.The results showed that crab disturbance exhibited significant seasonality with large seasonal differences in cave density and depth.Due to crab disturbance,nitrogen fuxes at the sediment-water interface were much greater in the box with crabs than in the box without crabs.In summer,NH-N showed a positive flux from the sediment to the overlying water,but NO2-N and NOg-N showed positive fluxes from the sediment to the overlying water only in early stages.In winter,NH-N showed a positive flux from the sediment to the overlying water,but NO-N and NO,-N both exhibited positive and negative fluxes.These results indicated that the presence of crab burrows can cause the aerobic layer to move downward by approximately 8-15 cm in summer and directly promote nitrification at the sediment surface.

Study on the Fabrication and Characterization of ZTA-SiC_w-TiC Polyphase Ceramics

Novel ZTA/Al 2O 3 SiC w TiC polyphase ceramics were fabricated by hot pressing techniques. Phase transformation toughening, particle dispersion and whisker reinforcement have obviously superposed strengthening and toughening effects. It is observed that ZTA 20SiC w 20TiC has better comprehensive mechanical properties compared with Al 2O 3 20SiC w 20TiC. For the optimum processing, the ZTA 20SiC w 20TiC exhibited a flexural strength of 567MPa, a fracture toughness of 6.3MPa·m 0.5 , a hardness of HRA93.6 and a relative density of ≥99.6%. The tensile stress in matrix introduced by SiC whisker and TiC could be relaxed by the compress stress produced by tetragonal zirconia(ZrO 2(t)) transformation. TiC formed a continuous skeleton which prevented the grain growth of the matrix. The grain sizes of the matrix became finer with increasing TiC. The major fracture mode of the matrix was transcrystalline cleavage rupture.
