Determining the Effects of Selected Organic Fertilizer on Growth and Yields of Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum: Var. Rio Grande Tomatoes) in Mundri West County, Western Equatoria State, South Sudan

Worldwide, the demand for agro-organic foods that are healthy, nutritious, and environmentally friendly is increasing dramatically across all nations among consumers. Tomatoes being one of the dietary requirements in almost every meal is not exceptional and its availability in the market all year round is very important to farmers as well as consumers because it is highly demanded as a vegetable par excellence;which is either eaten raw in salads, cooked or processed into liquid ingredients. This study investigates the impact of chicken, goat, and cow manure treatments on tomato plant growth response to height, leaf length, and width, as well as fruit yield. The experimental field trials were conducted over two planting seasons in Mundri West County. It followed a Complete Randomized Design (CRD) approach, consisting of four blocks. Each block contained three treatments replicated four times and a control group. The data of measured parameters from all 16 plots were subjected to one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) using the Gen Stat 14th Edition software. The findings indicate significant differences (P < 0.05) among all the different organic manure applications on tomato plant growth parameters compared to the control group. Chicken manure resulted in the tallest tomato plants (30.1 and 37.9 cm), longest leaves (9.9 and 10.4 cm), and widest leaves (2.1 and 2.5 cm) in both seasons respectively. The study showed plots treated with chicken manure had a highly significant impact (P < 0.05) on the prevalence of aphids (1.0) and white flies (1.4) with the lowest value compared to those with cow and goat manure applied. Additionally, chicken manure led to the highest yields (39.30 and 49.49 tons/ha) in both seasons. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that using chicken manure effectively improves the performance of Rio Grande Tomatoes, and thus, farmers are encouraged to utilize chicken manure to maximize their tomato yields.

This paper assessed some of the reported cases of building failures and their possible causes in Nigeria between 1977 and 2011. The reported major failure causes are structural failure (SF), Carelessness (CLSS), poor workmanship (PW), poor supervision (PS), poor materials (PM), and quackery (Q).These causes of failure were subjected to Chi-Square statistical test at 5% significant level and 4 degree of freedom to know the most common cause of failure in Nigeria. The analysis showed quackery as the principal culprit in the reported building failures in Nigeria with prevalence of 8 over poor supervision being the minimum in occurrence. Structural failure occurred 5 times, while poor materials, carelessness and poor workmanship occurred 4, 2 and 2 respectively. The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) with Engineering Regulation and Monitoring (ERM) as her arm as a technical professional group discouraging quackery and failures generally in Engineering Practice. The holistic approach needs effective training of Engineers starting with strong mathematical and scientific background at the secondary and tertiary education levels in conjunction with rigorous field and Industrial training exercises. There after effective scrutiny, professional registration process of competent engineers is followed.

Association between Support and Satisfaction with Life among Older Adults in Ekiti, Nigeria: Findings and Implications

Many developing countries like Nigeria lack policy for the care of the older adults and this creates major challenges for the elderly population. The traditional family institution and community support that used to be safety nest are being adversely affected by westernization. This development might have adverse effect on life satisfaction among the older adults. This hospital based cross-sectional study was designed to determine the association between support and life satisfaction among older adults. A total of 128 subjects participated in the study out of which 28.9% were satisfied with life. Expectation of support was mainly from the family, less from the community and very low from the government. The level of support received from all sources generally fell short of expectations. Marital status and source of livelihood were significantly associated with life satisfaction. There is inadequate social support from the government and support from family and community fell below expectations. Expectations of support were the most strongly correlated with life satisfaction. Support for older adults must be addressed in order to meet their expectations and improve their level of satisfaction with life.

This study focused on identifying factors affecting the benefits of Participatory Forestry Management (PFM) income generating activities in Upper Imenti Forest and whether they are dependent on status of participation in forest management through membership of Community Forest Association (CFA) or not. Cross-sectional survey research design was applied for collecting quantitative data using a semi-structured questionnaire administered to 384 households stratified on the basis of PFM participation status. Qualitative data was collected through focused group discussions using a checklist and key informant interviews using an interview schedule. Using Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 25, Binomial regression with Wald Chi-square was analyzed to identify factors perceived to be significantly influencing benefits for PFM participants and Pearson Chi-square to compare factors perceived to be affecting PFM and non-PFM participants. CFA members participation in PFM was significantly and positively affected by benefits of PFM income generating activities and forest products accessed in the forest. Benefits linked to Plantation Establishment for Livelihood Improvement System (PELIS) for CFA members were significantly reduced by enforcement of moratorium policy since February 2018, diseases and pests, poor PELIS guideline adherence and animal damage. Benefits related to state forest access for firewood by the CFA members were negatively influenced by the moratorium policy. Diseases and pests affected benefits associated with bee keeping significantly. Comparing factors under different PFM participation status, crop production was significantly affected by policy changes, pest and diseases, animal damage and PELIS guideline adherence for CFA members than for Non-CFA members. Policy changes also affected the CFA members significantly in firewood collection and access to fodder in the state forest than the Non-CFA members. Hence, sustainable community participation

A geophysical survey involving the electrical resistivity method utilizing the Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) and Electrical Imaging Techniques was conducted around the premises of an area within south-western Nigeria with the aim of studying structural defects which may be responsible for future problems and characterizing the soil conditions of the site. A total of 15 VES stations were occupied using Schlumberger Configuration with AB/2 varying from 1 to 65 m. In the electrical imaging, dipole-dipole array was adopted and the two traverses were occupied in the S-N and E-W directions close to where wall cracks and subsurface problems were manifested. Five main geoelectric sequences were delineated within the study area;these include the topsoil (clay and sandy clay), lateritic clay, weathered bedrock (clay, sandy clay and clayey sand), fractured bedrock and fresh basement. A major discontinuity (fracture zone) was discovered along the S-N direction, while a weak zone was also discovered along E-W direction. The result of this research has shown that the causes of the cracks and distress on the walls within the site may have been influenced by the differential settlement resulting from the incompetent subsoil materials and the fractured bedrock on which the foundation of the building was laid.

This work aims to study the development of the pericarp of the fruit of Elaeis guineensis Jacq. var. dura. The thickness, the water and the oil contents of its tissues are evaluated every two weeks, from pollination to the maturity of the fruit. The development of the oil palm fruit takes 5.5 months. The endocarp reaches its maximum thickness at the 70th DPP （day post-pollination）, with a water content of 72%. It then starts its dehydration, while sclerifying. It therefore isolates the seed at start and later protects it. The mesocarp is visible at anthesis and its water content is close to 92%. From the 100th DPP, it begins a continuous dehydration associated, from the 130th DPP, with an active lipids biosynthesis. Ultimately, the pericarp of the oil palm fruit fulfills both functions, namely to protect the seed by early sclerification of the endocarp and ensure the dissemination of the species by the high oil content of the mesocarp. A comparative anatomy of the pericarp tissues of the three *** E. guineensis Jacq., during the first three weeks of fruit development, will enhance the understanding of the primary effect of sh gene.

Clinical Profile of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) in a Semi-Rural Ivorian Environment

Objectives: To describe the clinical profile of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) in a semi-rural Ivorian setting: the rheumatology department of the Bouaké University Hospital (CHU.B). Patients and methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study from January 2018 to December 2023 in the rheumatology department of the CHU.B. The study focused on the epidemiological, diagnostic and therapeutic data of children followed for JIA on the basis of the classification criteria of the International League of Associations for Rheumatology (ILAR). Excel 2019 software was used to analyse the data. Results: Over a 6-year period, JIA represented 0.29% (11/3780) of all rheumatological conditions and 1.40% (11/782) of childhood rheumatic diseases. The mean age of the children at diagnosis was 13.09 ± 3.01 years, and the mean age at onset of the disease was 8.54 years. There were 6 girls and 5 boys. Joint involvement was the main reason for consultation and hospitalisation, accounting for 81.81% (9) of cases. There was a family history in 3 children (27.3%). The clinical forms were as follows: systemic 27.27% (3), oligoarticular 27.27% (3), polyarticular with rheumatoid factor negative 27.27% (3), polyarticular with rheumatoid factor positive 9.09 (1), arthritis with enthesitis 9.09 (1). JIA was discovered at steinbrocker functional stages II and III. Treatment included NSAIDs 72.72% (8), corticosteroid therapy combined with methotrexate and hydroxychloroquine 54.54% (6) and rehabilitation 63.63% (7). Conclusion: JIA is a little-known disease in the semi-rural environment of Côte d’Ivoire. It is characterised by a long delay in diagnosis in relation to poverty and the lack of recourse to alternative medicine in our populations;hence, it is important to raise awareness of the condition among the population and practitioners. Multidisciplinary intervention would improve the diagnosis and management of children with JIA.

Kinetics of Neutralization of Polymetallic Mining Discharges from the Perkoa Zinc Deposit in Central-Western Burkina Faso

Oxidized and acidic mining discharges(pH between 4 and 5)from the Perkoa zinc mine in Burkina Faso consisting of waste rock,crusher rejects and mining tailings were sampled and used for neutralization tests with calcareous dolomite(for six months).The mining discharges and the calcareous dolomite were previously *** of 60 cm length and 15 cm diameter were used for the ***,2.62 kg of calcareous dolomite was deposited on the mining discharges in each *** liters of deionized water are added every 15 days to each *** were taken at the outlet of the columns at time intervals and then analyzed to assess the evolution of pH,electrical conductivity and contents of PHEs(Potentially Harmful Elements)over *** the neutralization tests on solid mining discharges,neutralization tests were also carried out on acid leachates resulting from the oxidation of these same solid mining discharges with calcareous *** results show that calcareous dolomite is very effective for the neutralization of SR(Sterile Discharges)and the precipitation of PHEs contained *** is also effective in buffering acidic effluents from these sterile *** for other mining discharges(crusher rejects and mining residues),although calcareous dolomite is not effective in neutralizing these oxidized and acidic solid discharges,it is however effective in precipitating PHEs such as arsenic and *** dolomite is also effective in buffering acid leachates from these oxidized and acidic mining discharges(crusher rejects and mining tailings).

Epidemiological and Clinical Aspects of Hospitalized Patients with Chronic Rheumatic Disease at Cocody University Hospital in Abidjan

Objective: To study the epidemiological and diagnostic features of chronic rheumatic disease (CRD) in a black population in sub-Saharan Africa. Patients and Methods: Retrospective descriptive study over eight years (January 2005 to December 2012) of patients seen for CRD in rheumatology hospitalization at the CHU de Cocody in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. Results: Of 3147 hospitalized patients, 92 had CRD, a frequency of 2.9%. The mean age of patients was 43.50 ± 15.6 years (extremes: 10 to 79 years). The sex ratio was 0.08 (7 men and 85 women). The socio-economic level was low in 44 patients (47.8%), medium in 44 patients (47.8%), and high in 4 patients (4.4%). The reasons for consultation were polyarthritis (64.1%), polyarthralgia (30.4%), and oligoarthritis (5.4%). The mean duration of symptomatology was 19 months (range: 3 to 20 years). The mean length of hospital stay was 14.2 ± 7.7 days (range: 2 to 36 days). The CRD observed were: rheumatoid arthritis (59.8%), systemic lupus erythematosus (23.9%), mixed connective tissue disease (6.5%), undifferentiated connective tissue disease (3.3%), polymyositis (3.3%), systemic scleroderma (2.2%), and systemic vasculitis (1%). Conclusion: CRD is not uncommon in rheumatology hospitals in Abidjan. Diagnostic delays are long, and rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus are the most frequently encountered conditions.
