AIM:To quantify and compare longitudinal thickness changes of the ganglion cell complex(GCC)and the choroid in patients with different patterns of age-related macular degeneration(AMD)***:Retrospective cohort analysis of anonymized data from participants aged 50y or more and diagnosed with early/intermediate AMD in at least one eye(with no evidence of advanced AMD).A total of 64 participants were included from the Instituto de Retina de Lisboa(IRL)study(IPL/2022/MetAllAMD_ESTeSL)and divided into 4 groups according to the Rotterdam classification for *** domain optical coherence tomography(SD-OCT)was used to assess and quantify GCC and choroid thickness at two time points(first visit vs last visit)with a minimum interval of ***:In the GCC inner ring,a thinner thickness(P=0.001)was observed in the atrophic AMD group(51.3±21.4μm)compared to the early AMD(84.3±11.5μm),intermediate AMD(77.6±16.1μm)and neovascular AMD(88.9±16.3μm)*** thickness quantification showed a generalized reduction in the central circle(P=0.002)and inner ring(P=0.001).Slight reductions in retinal thickness were more accentuated in the inner ring in the atrophic AMD(-13%;P<0.01).CONCLUSION:The variation of the analyzed structures could be an indicator of risk of progression with neurodegenerative(GCC)or vascular(choroid)pattern in the intermediate and atrophic *** quantification of both structures can provide important information about the risk of disease progression in the early and intermediate stages but also for the evolution pattern into late stages(atrophic or neovascular).

In this paper,we present a modeling of the soil-water characteristic curve for residual and sedimentary soils of Bom Brinquedo Hill’s,located in Antonina,*** mountain range region is characterized as a natural disaster risk area,requiring continuous research related to the stability of the *** obtain the soil-water characteristic curve,undisturbed samples of residual and sedimentary soil were collected,followed by suction testing using the filter paper *** the bimodal characteristic presented by the soil,LABFIT software was employed for curve fitting using the generic formulation“Harris+C”.The results of the tests indicated that the phenomenon of hysteresis had a greater influence in situations with higher suction *** comparing the residual moisture values of the macropores between residual soil and sedimentary soil,the former exhibited the lower *** suggests that the residual soil has a coarser grain size and larger pores,which facilitates the release of water retained in the soil’s macropores.

This study examines the relationship between geomagnetic indices and mortality rates from specific diseases in the Northeast (NE) and Southern (S) regions of Brazil from 1996 to 2020. Solar activity data, including the Ap and Sudden Ionospheric Disturbance (SID) indices, were sourced from the World Data Center, while mortality data were obtained from the Mortality Information System (SIM-DATASUS). Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) emerged as the leading cause of mortality, with average death rates of 60.4, 56.8, and 58.3 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants in Pernambuco (PE), Rio Grande do Sul (RS), and Paraná (PR), respectively. Temporal analysis revealed a consistent upward trend in AMI mortality across most states, except for Santa Catarina (SC). Seasonal patterns identified through Principal Component Analysis (PCA) demonstrated that geomagnetic and climatic indices influenced mortality differently across regions and seasons. The Ap geomagnetic index was strongly correlated with higher AMI mortality rates during summer, while the SID index showed greater relevance during winter. A dipole phenomenon was observed, with AMI deaths increasing alongside geomagnetic activity in the S region but showing an inverse relationship in the NE region. These findings highlight the significant influence of geomagnetic variations on public health, particularly cardiovascular mortality. The study underscores the need for further research into the biological mechanisms underlying these associations and recommends the development of early warning systems and targeted preventive measures to mitigate the potential health impacts of geomagnetic disturbances, especially for vulnerable populations.

The experimental analysis takes too much time-consuming process and requires considerable effort, while, the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) algorithms are simple, affordable, and fast, and they allow us to make a relevant analysis in establishing an appropriate relationship between the input and output parameters. This paper deals with the use of back-propagation ANN algorithms for the experimental data of heat transfer coefficient, Nusselt number, and friction factor of water-based Fe 3 O 4 -TiO 2 magnetic hybrid nanofluids in a mini heat sink under magnetic fields. The data considered for the ANN network is at different Reynolds numbers (239 to 1874), different volume concentrations (0% to 2.0%), and different magnetic fields (250 to 1000 G), respectively. Three types of ANN back-propagation algorithms Levenberg-Marquardt (LM), Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno Quasi Newton (BFGS), and Variable Learning Rate Gradient Descent (VLGD) were used to train the heat transfer coefficient, Nusselt number, and friction factor data, respectively. The ANOVA t -test analysis was also performed to determine the relative accuracy of the three ANN algorithms. The Nusselt number of 2.0% vol. of Fe 3 O 4 -TiO 2 hybrid nanofluid is enhanced by 38.16% without a magnetic field, and it is further enhanced by 88.93% with the magnetic field of 1000 Gauss at a Reynolds number of 1874, with respect to the base fluid. A total of 126 datasets of heat transfer coefficient, Nusselt number, and friction factor were used as input and output data. The three ANN algorithms of LM, BFGS, and VLGD, have shown good acceptance with the experimental data with root-mean-square errors of 0.34883, 0.25341, and 1.0202 with correlation coefficients (R 2 ) of 0.99954, 0.9967, and 0.94501, respectively, for the Nusselt number data. Moreover, the three ANN algorithms predict root-mean-square errors of 0.001488, 0.005041, and 0.006924 with correlation coefficients (R 2 ) of 0.99982, 0.99976, and 0.99486, respect

Rapid urbanization has emerged as one of the most critical challenges to ecological sustainability in urban *** developing countries,the degradation of the ecosystem is more prominent due to the lack of urban ***,it has become urgent for researchers to identify the ecological efficiency(EE)changes imposed by urban expansion and promote sustainable land use *** study aims to develop a comprehensive urban ecological efficiency(UEE)framework in the Kolkata Metropolitan Area(KMA),India,from 2000 to *** component analysis(PCA)was used to develop a remote sensing-based UEE index(UEEI)based on five effective ecological parameters(Greenness,Dryness,Heat,Wetness and vegetation health.A single sensitivity parameter was also calculated to determine the role of a single parameter based on which management strategies can be carried *** findings showed that(i)there were substantial deteriorations of UEE in the last 20 *** 2000 the areas with good EE were about 65.5%which declined to 53.72%in 2010 and 20.87%in *** areas with good UEE decreased 68%and 61%from 2000 to 2020 and 2010 to 2020,respectively;(ii)the areas with good UEE were 52%in 2000,while 38%in *** urban centres(Bhadreshwar,Champdani,Srirampur,Bally,Howrah,Kamarhati,Baranagar,Dum Dum,South Dum Dum,Rajarhat,Bidhannagar)located around the Kolkata megacity are characterized by poor and very poor EE(ranges of 0.60-1.00).Thus,spatiotemporal pattern of UEE could assist to clarify the administrative responsibilities as well as *** addition to this,the UEE framework can help for scientific guidance of urban ecosystem protection and restoration through comprehensive spatial landscape planning.

Fire and pre-or post-fire management practices shape the distribution and richness of plant ***,the effects of pre-and post-fire management on vegetation recovery were studied at different times,up to 18 months after a *** months after a 2015 wildfire,18 study plots were established(three 4-m^2 plots for each treatment),vegetation regrowth was monitored and vegetal species richness(S),evenness(IT),density(D),diversity(H0)and maximum diversity(HMax)after 2,10 and 18 *** treatments were(1)control,unaffected by 2015 wildfire;(2)no treatment(NT),burned in 2015 wildfire and not managed;(3)managed in 2005 and burned in 2015(M05B);(4)managed in 2015,2 months before wildfire(M15B);(5)cut and manual removal after the 2015 wildfire(CR);(6)cut and no trunk removal randomly deposited on topsoil after the 2015 wildfire(CL).All the treatments were carried out in a Pinus halepensis Miller *** 10 and 18 months after the wildfire,vegetation recovery was greater in NT,CR and CL plots than in M05B and M15B the *** 18 months after the wildfire,Brachypodium retusum(Pers.)*** Rosmarinus officinalis *** still dominant,especially in M15B,corroborating the belief that pre-fire treatment reduced ecosystem resilience and vegetal recovery compared to the NT and post-fire managed *** was significantly lower 10 months after wildfire in control plots,and IT was significantly higher in that inventory than previously in *** months after the wildfire,H0 was significantly lower in *** months post-wildfire,HMax was significantly lower in the control *** months after the wildfire,HMax,was significantly higher in CR,CL and M05B than in the control and M15B ***,pre-fire management was detrimental to post-fire vegetation recovery,while manual post-fire management proved beneficial.

Studies of post-fire soil status in Mediterranean ecosystems are common;however,few have examined the effects of long-term forest management after a wildfire on physicochemical soil ***,we analyzed differences in soil properties attributable to long-term postfire management and assessed the sustainability of these management practices in relation to the soil *** study area is located in Odena in the northeast region of the Iberian Peninsula consisted of the control forest(burned more than 30 years ago),low density forest(LD;burned in a wildfire in 1986 and managed in 2005)and high density forest(HD;burned in a wildfire in 1986 and no managed).For soils from each plot,we measured soil water repellency,aggregate stability,total nitrogen(TN),soil organic matter(SOM),inorganic carbon(IC),pH,electrical conductivity,extractable calcium,magnesium,sodium,potassium(K),phosphorus,aluminum(Al),manganese(Mn),iron(Fe),zinc,copper,boron,chrome,silicon and sulfur and calculated the ratios of C/N,Ca+Mg/(Na+K)^1/2,Ca/Al and Ca/*** differences were found in TN,IC,SOM,pH,K,Al,Mn,Fe and C/N ratio(p<0.05).All soil properties were found to have largely recovered their pre-fire *** were affected by the post-fire management practices implemented 20 years after the fire,as reflected in their respective physicochemical properties,so that soil properties at the control and LD sites are more similar today than those at the control and HD ***,sustainable forest management can overcome soil degradation in areas affected by wildfire in the medium-and long-term by improving soil properties.

At the International Geological Congress held in Florence, Italy in August 2004 the IUGS Council approved the formation of a new Commission on Geoscience for Environmental Management. This new Commission was formed to continue IUGS activities in the environment following the closure of the IUGS Commission on Geological Sciences for Environmental Planning(COGEOENVIRONMENT) which had completed its term (refer to separate article in this issue).
