Hybrid microsystem with functionalized silicon substrate and PDMS sample operating microchannel: A reconfigurable microfluidics scheme

A hybrid microsystem with separately functioned temperature controlling substrate and sample operating fluidic microchannel was developed to demonstrate a reconfigurable microfluidics *** temperature controlling substrate integrated a micro heater and a temperature sensor by using traditional silicon-based micromechanical system(MEMS)technique,which guaranteed high performance and robust reliability for repeatable *** sample operating fluidic microchannel was prepared by poly-(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS)based soft lithography technique,which made it cheap enough for disposable *** PDMS microchannel chip was attached to the temperature controlling substrate for reconfigurable thermal applications.A thin PDMS film was used to seal the microchannel and bridge the functionalized substrate and the sample inside the channel,which facilitated heat transferring and prevented sample contaminating the temperature controlling *** by a one dimensional thermal resistance model,the thin PDMS film was important for the present reconfiguration *** performance of this hybrid microsystem was examined,and the experimental results demonstrated that the chip system could work stably over hours with temperature variation less than *** PDMS microchannel chips were tested on one heating substrate sequentially with a maximum intra-chip temperature difference of *** extracted from serum of a chronic hepatitis B virus(HBV)patient was amplified by this hybrid microsystem and the gel electrophoresis result indicated that the present reconfigurable microfluidic scheme worked successfully.

The input signals of brain-computer interfaces(BCIs)may be either scalp electroencephalogram(EEG)or electrocor- ticogram(ECoG)recorded from subdural *** make BCIs practical,the classifiers for discriminating different brain states must have the ability of session-to-session *** paper proposes an algorithm for classifying single-trial ECoG during motor imagery of different *** features,derived from two physiological phenomena,movement-related potentials(MRP)and event-related desynchronization(ERD),and extracted by common spatial subspace decomposition(CSSD)and waveform mean,are combined to per- form classification *** specific signal processing methods utilized are described in *** algorithm was successfully applied to Data SetⅠof BCI CompetitionⅢ,and achieved a classification accuracy of 91% on test set.

Gas-solid bubbling fluidized beds are widely used in chemical,energy,construction,and other industrial fields due to their excellent fluidization performance.2D-fluidized beds with planar rectangular columns of finite thickness are widely used in fluidized bed studies,and it is essential for understanding the hydrodynamics of gas-particle ***,the distributor(porous medium)at the bottom of the bed has a crucial influence on the fluidization performance of the 2D-fluidized *** this work,the fluidization mechanism and gas-solid dynamic characteristics of the fluidized bed under three porous media are studied by CFD-DEM coupled with the porous medium model,and the accuracy of numerical simulation is verified by a high-speed photography *** show that with the increase in the flow resistance of the porous medium,the average and standard deviation of the bubble diameter decrease,and the time and position of particles in the dead zone to participate in the core-annular flow *** a low fluidization velocity,the dead zone in the bed can be considerably reduced by increasing the flow resistance.

This paper addresses the problem of detecting on-road vehicles in still images captured by the on-board cameras. We model this as a labelling inference procedure and incorporate the part-based representation of the rear-ends of vehicle within a hidden random field based probabilistic model. Representing objects with parts inherently good for dealing with occlusions. In the proposed model, the part labels form a hidden layer in the graphical model. Our approaches can automatically find the latent parts without explicit indication during training. The experiment is performed on the database with real images with a promising result.

On the Optimal Initial Inner-Core Size for Tropical Cyclone Intensification: An Idealized Numerical Study

Recent observational and numerical studies have revealed the dependence of the intensification rate on the inner-core size of tropical cyclones (TCs). In this study, with the initial inner-core size (i.e., the radius of maximum wind-RMW) varied from 20-180 km in idealized simulations using two different numerical models, we found a nonmonotonic dependence of the lifetime maximum intensification rate (LMIR) on the inner-core size. Namely, there is an optimal inner-core size for the LMIR of a TC. Tangential wind budget analysis shows that, compared to large TCs, small TCs have large inward flux of absolute vorticity due to large absolute vorticity inside the RMW. However, small TCs also suffer from strong lateral diffusion across the eyewall, which partly offsets the positive contribution from large inward flux of absolute vorticity. These two competing processes ultimately lead to the TC with an intermediate initial inner-core size having the largest LMIR. Results from sensitivity experiments show that the optimal size varies in the range of 40-120 km and increases with higher sea surface temperature, lower latitude, larger horizontal mixing length, and weaker initial TC intensity. The 40-120 km RMW corresponds to the inner-core size most commonly found for intensifying TCs in observations, suggesting the natural selection of initial TC size for intensification. This study highlights the importance of accurate representation of TC inner-core size to TC intensity forecasts by numerical weather prediction models.

A wide open bottom story of a frame building is often expected by owners for use as a garage or shops. However, this leads to weak stories due to abrupt changes in lateral stiffness and often results in unexpected story collapse as observed in many previous earthquakes. To retrofit frame buildings that have experienced weak story damage, a tendon system is proposed in this study, which consists of a set of swaying columns and tendons. The swaying columns are used to uniformly redistribute the lateral deformation along the height, while the tendons provide extra lateral stiffness and renders the entire structural system a re-centering capability. To avoid unnecessary forces to swaying columns, pin-connections are used at the bottom. Tendons are placed over the entire story to gain large elastic displacements. Parametric analysis reveals that the swaying column, with a stiffness of about 0.9 times that of the weak story, and the tendons attached at the roof, with a stiffness of 0.04 times that of the weak story, can provide the optimal performance with a maximum residual story drift angle of less than 0.5%. Online hybrid tests were carried out, which demonstrated that uniformly distributed story drifts and acceptable residual deformation could be achieved by the proposed tendon system.
