Animal models of pulmonary hypertension due to left heart disease

Pulmonary hypertension due to left heart disease(PH-LHD) is regarded as the most prevalent form of pulmonary hypertension(PH). Indeed, PH is an independent risk factor and predicts adverse prognosis for patients with left heart disease(LHD). Clinically, there are no drugs or treatments that directly address PH-LHD, and treatment of LHD alone will not also ameliorate PH. To target the underlying physiopathological alterations of PH-LHD and to develop novel therapeutic approaches for this population, animal models that simulate the pathophysiology of PH-LHD are required. There are several available models for PH-LHD that have been successfully employed in rodents or large animals by artificially provoking an elevated pressure load on the left heart, which by transduction elicits an escalated pressure in pulmonary artery. In addition, metabolic derangement combined with aortic banding or vascular endothelial growth factor receptor antagonist is also currently applied to reproduce the phenotype of PH-LHD. As of today, none of the animal models exactly recapitulates the condition of patients with PH-LHD. Nevertheless, the selection of an appropriate animal model is essential in basic and translational studies of PH-LHD. Therefore, this review will summarize the characteristics of each PH-LHD animal model and discuss the advantages and limitations of the different models.

The Bell nonlocality is closely related to the foundations of quantum physics and has significant applications to security questions in quantum key distributions.In recent years,the sharing ability of the Bell nonlocality has been extensively studied.The nonlocality of quantum network states is more complex.We first discuss the sharing ability of the simplest bilocality under unilateral or bilateral POVM measurements,and show that the nonlocality sharing ability of network quantum states under unilateral measurements is similar to the Bell nonlocality sharing ability,but different under bilateral measurements.For the star network scenarios,we present for the first time comprehensive results on the nonlocality sharing properties of quantum network states,for which the quantum nonlocality of the network quantum states has a stronger sharing ability than the Bell nonlocality.

To the Editor:Cardiac arrest(CA)is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality among hospitalized patients globally and has low rates of overall survival.After the return of spontaneous circulation(ROSC),patients with CA and systemic ischemia/reperfusion injury can manifest as sepsis-like syndromes and immune disorders that increase the risk of infections.CD4^(+)T lymphocytes play an important role in organ ischemia-reperfusion injury.T-helper(Th)types 1 and 2 cells are classical subsets of CD4^(+)T cells.Extensive research on their functions in infectious and immune-related inflammatory diseases indicates that both subsets participate in host defense and direct immune responses.Data from CA/cardiopulmonary resuscitation porcine models and patients have revealed imbalances in Th1/Th2 cell ratio.[1]Therefore,Th1 and Th2 cells are important for understanding post-ROSC immune dysfunction in patients with CA.

Congenital chloride diarrhea(CCD;OMIM 214700)is an intestinal disease of an electrolyte defect characterized by dilated bowel loops,maternal polyhydramnios,premature birth,and lack of infant meconium[l].The incidence of CCD is variable worldwide.Most cases are sporadic;however,there are three high-incidence areas,Finland,Poland,and Saudi Arabia.In addition,large genetic heterogeneity has been reported in about 300 sporadic patients with CCD from other ethnic groups[2-4].Undiagnosed or untreated CCD can be lethal within the first year of life,but with adequate treatment,patients are usually able to survive into adulthood[5,6].

Quantum gradient descent algorithms for nonequilibrium steady states and linear algebraic systems

The gradient descent approach is the key ingredient in variational quantum algorithms and machine learning tasks,which is an optimization algorithm for finding a local minimum of an objective function.The quantum versions of gradient descent have been investigated and implemented in calculating molecular ground states and optimizing polynomial functions.Based on the quantum gradient descent algorithm and Choi-Jamiolkowski isomorphism,we present approaches to simulate efficiently the nonequilibrium steady states of Markovian open quantum many-body systems.Two strategies are developed to evaluate the expectation values of physical observables on the nonequilibrium steady states.Moreover,we adapt the quantum gradient descent algorithm to solve linear algebra problems including linear systems of equations and matrix-vector multiplications,by converting these algebraic problems into the simulations of closed quantum systems with well-defined Hamiltonians.Detailed examples are given to test numerically the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms for the dissipative quantum transverse Ising models and matrix-vector multiplications.

We investigate the average coherence with respect to a complete set of complementary measurements.By using a Wigner-Yanase skew information-based coherence measure introduced in Luo and Sun(2017 Phys.Rev.A 96,022130),we evaluate the average coherence of a state with respect to any complete set of mutually unbiased measurements and general symmetric informationally complete measurements,respectively.We also establish analytically the relations among these average coherences.

Total variance and invariant information in complementary measurements

We investigate the total variance of a quantum state with respect to a complete set of mutually complementary measurements and its relation to the Brukner–Zeilinger invariant information.By summing the variances over any complete set of mutually unbiased measurements and general symmetric informationally complete measurements respectively,we show that the Brukner–Zeilinger invariant information associated with such types of quantum measurements is equal to the difference between the maximal variance and the total variance obtained.These results provide an operational link between the previous interpretations of the Brukner–Zeilinger invariant information.
