Measuring Social Vulnerability to Natural Hazards in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region,China

Social vulnerability in this study represents the differences between the capacity to cope with natural hazards and disaster losses suffered within and between *** assessment of social vulnerability has been recognized as a critical step in understanding natural hazard risks and enhancing effective response *** article presents an initial study of the social vulnerability of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei(B-T-H) Region in *** goal is to replicate and test the applicability of the United States Social Vulnerability Index(So VI) method in a Chinese cultural ***-nine variables adapted from the So VI were collected in relation to two aspects:socioeconomic vulnerability and built environment *** factor analysis,seven factors were extracted from the variable set:the structure of social development,the level of economic and government financial strength,social justice and poverty,family structure,the intensity of space development,the status of residential housing and transportation,and building *** scores were summed to get the final So VI scores and the most and least vulnerable units were identified and *** highest social vulnerability is concentrated in the northwest of the study *** least socially vulnerable areas are mainly distributed in the Beijing,Tianjin and Shijiazhuang core urban peripheral and central city areas of the prefecture-level *** results show that this method is a useful tool for revealing places that have a high level of vulnerability,in other words,areas which are more likely to face significant challenges in coping with a large-scale *** findings could provide a scientific basis for policy making and the implementation of disaster prevention and mitigation in China.

Modeling and analysis of Internet worm propagation

Although the frequency of Internet worm＇s outbreak is decreased during the past ten years, the impact of worm on people＇s privacy security and enterprise＇s efficiency is still a severe problem, especially the emergence of botnet. It is urgent to do more research about worm＇s propagation model and security defense. The well-known worm models, such as simple epidemic model （SEM） and two-factor model （TFM）, take all the computers on the internet as the same, which is not accurate because of the existence of network address translation （NAT）. In this paper, we first analyze the worm＇s functional structure, and then we propose a three layer worm model named three layres worm model （TLWM）, which is an extension of SEM and TFM under NAT environment. We model the TLWM by using deterministic method as it is used in the TFM. The simulation results show that the number of NAT used on the Internet has effects on worm propagation, and the more the NAT used, the slower the worm spreads. So, the extensive use of NAT on the Internet can restrain the worm spread to some extent.

Progressive framework for deep neural networks: from linear to non-linear

We propose a novel progressive framework to optimize deep neural networks. The idea is to try to combine the stability of linear methods and the ability of learning complex and abstract internal representations of deep leaming methods. We insert a linear loss layer between the input layer and the first hidden non-linear layer of a traditional deep model. The loss objective for optimization is a weighted sum of linear loss of the added new layer and non-linear loss of the last output layer. We modify the model structure of deep canonical correlation analysis （DCCA）, i.e., adding a third semantic view to regularize text and image pairs and embedding the structure into our framework, for cross-modal retrieval tasks such as text-to-image search and image-to-text search. The experimental results show the performance of the modified model is better than similar state-of-art approaches on a dataset of National University of Singapore （NUS-WIDE）. To validate the generalization ability of our framework, we apply our framework to RankNet, a ranking model optimized by stochastic gradient descent. Our method outperforms RankNet and converges more quickly, which indicates our progressive framework could provide a better and faster solution for deep neural networks.

Fingerprint singular points extraction based on the properties of orientation model

A novel method for fingerprint singular points extraction including location and orientation is proposed based on some properties of the orientation field models. Singular points are located by clustering the results of corner detection. Then, through examining the sub-block orientation fields at a number of selected positions on concentric circles centered about the located singular point, an iterative method based on the orientation differences is proposed to compute the orientation of the core point. Experimental results on NIST4 and FVC2002 four databases demonstrate the proposed method can consistently locate singular points with the high accuracy. The location and orientation of the detected singular points can be used for alignment （translation and rotation） parameters in fingerprint matching.

FINGERPRINT-BASED KEY BINDING/RECOVERING SCHEME BASED ON FUZZY VAULT

This letter proposes fingerprint-based key binding/recovering with fuzzy vault. Fingerprint minutiae data and the cryptographic key are merged together by a multivariable linear function. First, the minutiae data are bound by a set of random data through the linear function. The number of the function’s variables is determined by the required number of matched minutiae. Then, a new key de- rived from the random data is used to encrypt the cryptographic key. Lastly, the binding data are protected using fuzzy vault scheme. The proposed scheme provides the system with the flexibility to use changeable number of minutiae to bind/recover the protected key and a unified method regardless of the length of the key.

BACKGROUND Intestinal ischemia/reperfusion(I/R)injury is a fatal syndrome that occurs under many clinical *** apoptosis of intestinal cells caused by ischemia can cause cell damage and provoke systemic dysfunction during ***,the mechanism of I/R-induced apoptosis remains *** fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator(CFTR)is a cAMP-activated chloride *** researchers have paid attention to its role in intestinal I/R injury,or the relationship between CFTR and intestinal apoptosis induced by hypoxia/reoxygenation(H/R).AIM To investigate the effects of CFTR on I/R-induced intestinal apoptosis and its underlying molecular *** An intestinal I/R injury model was established in mice with superior mesenteric artery occlusion, and Caco2 cells were subjected to H/R for the simulation of I/R in *** results suggested that CFTR overexpression significantly increased the Caco2 cell viability anddecreased cell apoptosis induced by the H/R. Interestingly, we found that the translocation of p65,an NF-κB member, from the cytoplasm to the nucleus after H/R treatment can be reversed by theoverexpression of CFTR, the NF-κB P65 would return from the nucleus to the cytoplasm asdetermined by immunostaining. We also discovered that CFTR inhibited cell apoptosis in theH/R-treated cells, and this effect was significantly curbed by the NF-κB activator BA, AKTinhibitor GSK690693 and the PI3K inhibitor LY294002. Moreover, we demonstrated that CFTRoverexpression could reverse the decreased PI3K/AKT expression induced by the I/R treatment invivo or H/R treatment in *** results of the present study indicate that the overexpression of CFTR protects Caco2 cells fromH/R-induced apoptosis;furthermore, it also inhibits H/R-induced apoptosis through thePI3K/AKT/NF-κB signaling pathway in H/R-treated Caco2 cells and intestinal tissues.

Experimental Study on Denitrification Using Coated Electrode of Immobilized Denitrifying Bacteria

Objective To develop a coated electrode of immobilized denitrificants and to evaluate the performance of a bioelectrochemical reactor to enhance and control denitrification, Methods Denitrifying bacteria were developed by batch incubation and immobilized with polyvinyl alcohol （PVA） on the surface of activated carbon fiber （ACF） to make a coated electrode. Then the coated electrode （cathode） and graphite electrode （anode） were transferred to the reactor to reduce nitrate. Results After acclimated to the mixtrophic and autotrophic denitrification stages, the denitrifying bacteria could use hydrogen as an electron donor to reduce nitrate, When the initial nitrate concentration was 30.2 mg NO3-N/L, the denitrification efficiency was 57.3% at an applied electric current of 15 mA and a hydraulic retention time （HRT） of 12 hours. Correspondingly, the current density was 0.083 mA / cm^2. The nitrate removal rate of the reactor was 34,4 g NO3-N / m^3,d, and the surface area loading was 1.34 g NO3-N / m^2.d. Conclusion The coated electrode may keep high quantity of blomass, thus achieving a high denitrification rate. Physical-mechanical properties of microbially induced calcite precipitation-treated loess and treatment mechanism

Loess disintegration can lead to geotechnical engineering problems,e.g.,slope erosion,wetting-induced landslide,and *** induced calcite precipitation(MICP)technique is a potential loess reinforcing *** study investigated the physical-mechanical properties of MICP-treated loess and then explored the mechanism of loess modification by ***,loess first underwent MICP treatment,i.e.,mixing loess with Sporosarcina pasteurii and cementation solution(CS).Then,the effects of the CS concentration(0.2,0.6,0.8,and 1 M)on the physical and mechanical properties of the MICP-treated loess were ***,the static contact angle test,scanning electron microscopy(SEM),and X-ray diffractometry(XRD)were conducted to study the mechanism of MICP treatment on *** showed the following property changes of loess after MICP treatment:the liquid limit decreased by 1.7%,the average particle size increased from 6 to 47μm,the specific gravity decreased from 2.65 to 2.43,the unconfined compressive strength increased from 37 to 71 k Pa,and the disintegration time increased from 10 to 25 ***,the shear strength also increased,and the shear strength parameters(cohesion c and internal friction angle?)varied with the CS *** static contact angle tests indicated that the water absorption ability of loess was reduced after MICP *** and XRD results verified that the CaCO_(3)from MICP was attributed to the above *** above findings explained the mechanism of MICP treatment of loess:the CaCO_(3)coats and cements the particles,and fills the pores of loess,improving the strength and water stability of loess.

Expression and functional analyses of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MPK) cascade genes in response to phytohormones in wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.)

Mitogen-activated protein kinase （MPK） cascades consist of a set of kinase types （MPKKKs, MPKKs, MPKs） to establish conserved signal-transducing modules mediating plant growth, development as well as responses to internal and external cues. In this study, the expression patterns of six MPKKK, two MPKK, and 11 MPK genes in wheat in responses to external treatments of phytohormones, including naphthylacetic acid （NAA）, abscisic acid （ABA）, 6-benzyladenine （6-BA）, gibber- ellin （GA3）, salisylic acid （SA）, jasmonic acid （JA）, and ethylene （ETH）, were investigated. Expression analysis revealed that several of the MPK cascade genes are responses to the external phytohormone signaling. Of which, TaMPKKKA;3 is induced by 6-BA and NAA while TaMPK4 repressed by ETH, GA3, SA, and JA; TaMPKKKA, TaMPKKKA;3 and TaMPK1 are down-regulated by ETH and GA3whereas TaMPK9 and TaMPK12 repressed by ETH and JA in addition that TaMPK12 also repressed by GA3; TaMPK12;1 is down-regulated by ABA, GA3 and SA while TaMPK17 repressed by all exogenous phytonormones examined. TaMPK4, a MPK type gene previously characterized to mediate tolerance to phosphate （Pi） deprivation, was functionally evaluated for its role in mediation of responses of plants to exogenous GA3, ETH, SA, and JA. Results indicated that overexpression and antisense expression of TaMPK4 in tobacco dramatically modify the growth of seedlings upon treatments of GA3, SA and JA, in which the overexpressors behaved deteriorated growth feature whereas the seedlings with antisense expression of TaMPK4 exhibited improved seedling phenotype. The growth behaviors in lines overexpressing or antisensely expressing TaMPK4 are closely associated with the biomass and the corresponding hormone-associated parameters. These results demonstrated that TaMPK4 acts as a critical player in mediating the phyto- hormone signaling.
