Touristic urbanization and greening of coastal dune fields:A long-term assessment of a temperate sandy barrier of Argentina

Dune barrier systems represent highly sought-after coastal landscapes for tourism and urban development around the world. However, a century ago, they were considered hazardous environments due to their great dynamic nature. As a result, stabilization practices were considered necessary. The systematic introduction of fast-growing exotic trees helped stabilize the sand, making it easier for tourism urbanization to take place, but also leading to erosion processes. This paper aims to assess long-term changes in vegetation cover over a large temperate barrier in Argentina. This complex region includes urban resorts, afforestation zones, and protected areas. A GIs-based geospatial analysis was conducted using a large satellite database(> 350 images), and the future evolution of the vegetation was modeled. The results revealed two primary spatiotemporal patterns associated with a gradual expansion of vegetation cover, accompanied by a concurrent reduction in sandy areas. In 1986, the dune area comprised 75% more surface than vegetation, whereas in 2021, it represented 60% less than vegetation. Furthermore, the 2050 scenario suggests a potential 40% reduction of dunes in certain areas. It is necessary to enhance management actions aimed at maintaining dune mobility and ensuring local and regional sediment balance. Long-term management strategies must focus on restoring native plant communities and controlling invasive species, and avoiding new dune fixation initiatives based on the introduction of exotic species.

Background:Platinum chemotherapy (CT) remains the backbone of systemic therapy for patients with small-cell lung cancer (sCLC). The nucleotide excision repair (nER) pathway plays a central role in the repair of the DnA damage exerted by platinum agents. Alteration in this repair mechanism may affect patients' survival.Materials and Methods:We conducted a retrospective analysis of data from 38 patients with extensive disease (ED)-sCLC who underwent platinum-CT at the Clinical Oncology Unit, Careggi University Hospital, Florence (Italy), from 2015 to 2020. mRnA expression analysis and single nucleotide polymorphism (snP) characterization of three nER pathway genes-namely , , and -were performed on patient tumor samples.Results:Overall, elevated expression of genes was observed in sCLC patients compared to healthy controls. Patients with low and expression levels exhibited a better median progression-free survival (mPFs = 7.1 . 4.9 months, = 0.39 for and mPFs = 6.9 . 4.8 months, = 0.093 for ) and overall survival (mOs = 8.7 . 6.0 months, = 0.4 for and mOs = 7.2 . 6.2 months, = 0.13 for ). Genotyping analysis of five snPs of genes showed a longer survival in patients harboring the wild-type genotype or the heterozygous variant of the rs11615 snP ( = 0.24 for PFs and = 0.14 for Os) and of the rs13181 and rs1799793 snPs ( = 0.43 and = 0.26 for PFs and = 0.21 and = 0.16 for Os, respectively) compared to patients with homozygous mutant genotypes.Conclusions:The comprehensive analysis of gene expression and snP variants appears to identify patients who derive greater survival benefits from platinum-CT.

Electrochemical reduction of Cr(Ⅵ)in the presence of sodium alginate and its application in water purification

Chromium(Cr)is used in many manufacturing processes,and its release into natural waters is a major environmental problem *** concentrations of Cr(Ⅵ)are toxic to human health and living organisms due to the carcinogenic and mutagenic nature of this *** work examined the conversion of Cr(Ⅵ)to Cr(Ⅲ)via electrochemical reduction using gold electrode in an acidic sodium alginate(sA)solution and subsequent removal of the produced Cr(Ⅲ)-sA by the polymer-enhanced ultrafiltration(PEUF)technique.A solution of sA in nitric acid was used both as an electrolytic medium during the voltammetric measurements and bulk electrolysis and as an extracting agent during the PEUF *** electroanalysis of Cr(Ⅵ)was performed by linear sweep voltammetry in the presence of acidic sA solution to study its voltammetric behavior as a function of the Cr(Ⅵ)concentration,pH,presence of Cr(Ⅲ),sA concentration and scan *** addition,the quantitative reduction of Cr(Ⅵ)to Cr(Ⅲ)was studied through the bulk electrolysis *** results showed efficient reduction with well-defined peaks at approximately 0.3 V ***/AgCl,using a gold working *** the pH increased,the reduction signal strongly decreased until its *** optimum sA concentration was 10 mmol/L,and it was observed that the presence of Cr(Ⅲ)did not interfere in the Cr(Ⅵ)*** the quantitative reduction by bulk electrolysis in the presence of acidic sA solution,it was possible to reduce all Cr(Ⅵ)to Cr(Ⅲ)followed by its removal via PEUF.

Ascorbic acid and prunasin,two candidate biomarkers for endodormancy release in almond flower buds identified by a nontargeted metabolomic study

Temperate fruit trees belonging to Prunus species have the ability to suspend(induce dormancy)and resume growth periodically in response to environmental and seasonal *** release requires the long-term accumulation of *** accumulation of cultivar-specific chill requirements,plants enter the state of ecodormancy,which means the ability to grow has been restored,depending on the fulfilment of heat *** many different metabolic pathways are implicated in endodormancy release,we have performed a metabolomic analysis,using the ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography–quadrupole time-of-flying(UPLC–QToF)*** assayed flower buds in different stages of endodormancy in four almond cultivars with different flowering times:the extra-early Desmayo Largueta,the late Antoñeta,the extra-late Penta,and the ultra-late *** orthogonal projection to latent-structure discriminant-analysis model was created to observe differences between endodormant and ecodormant flower *** metabolites showing the most significant variation were searched against the Metlin,HMDB,and KEGG libraries,which allowed us to identify 87 *** metabolites were subsequently assigned to specific pathways,such as abscisic acid biosynthesis,phenylpropanoid biosynthesis,and D-sorbitol metabolism,among *** two metabolites that exhibited the most significant variations in all the cultivars studied with fold changes of up to 6.49 were ascorbic acid and *** the first time,these two metabolites have been proposed as potential biomarkers for endodormancy release in *** the high synteny present between the Rosaceae species,these results could be extrapolated to other important crops like peach,plum,cherry,or apricot,among others.

short-term effects of different fire severities on soil properties and Pinus halepensis regeneration

Influence of Livestock soil Eutrophication on Floral Composition in the Pyrenees Mountains

Livestock behaviour in the Pyrenees includes free grazing and a long resting period that provokes the accumulation of dung and urine in some places,so-called camping areas. The aims of this study were (i) to analyze any change in floral composition,and in nutritional and chemical contents of plants in a livestock camping area; and (ii) to relate the floral composition with soil chemical properties. In a linear transect,five sampling zones were established,from the centre of the camping area to the surrounding nardus stricta-dominant pasture. The above ground plant biomass and the topsoil were sampled in each zone with 6 replicates per zone. Plant species were classified and weighed to calculate above ground biomass,nutritional and chemical contents,and shannon diversity and evenness indices. Additionally,soils were sampled in two periods,at the beginning and at the end of grazing period. soil available nutrients (nitrate,ammonium,phosphorus,potassium,calcium and magnesium),total nitrogen,organic carbon and pH were measured. Plant chemical contents (protein,lignin and others) were significantly related to the proportions of grasses,legumes and other plants; so,the protein content is positively correlated with legumes plant biomass while lignin content is negatively correlated with grasses. Both plant and soil nutrients increased linearly towards the centre of the camping area. However,the relationship among plant species richness,diversity and evenness relative to its position along the studied transect was bell-shaped. From the outskirts to the centre of the camping area,plants with low nutrient demand were progressively replaced by those with medium and high nutrients demand and by pioneers. nardus stricta-dominant pasture has low plant diversity and plant nutrient content as well as a poor soil nutrient availability. γγ interactions with KLOE

studies of γγ interactions are performed with the KLOE detector, without tagging of the outgoing e^＋e^-. The data sample is from an integrated luminosity of 240 pb^-1. It was collected at the φ-factory DAOnE with e^＋e^- beams colliding at √s ≌1 GeV, below the φ resonance peak. We present preliminary results concerning the observation of the γγ→η process and the evidence for γγ→π^0π^0 production at low π^0π^0 invariant masses.

Pigments present in the brown-greenish C morph of an intracellular endosymbiont of Pomacea canaliculata were *** extracts of the endosymbiotic corpuscles showed an absorption spectrum similar to that of *** fractions obtained from silica gel column chromatography of the acetone extracts(CI,CII and CIII),were studied by positive ion fast atom bombardment-mass spectrometry(FAB–Ms)and hydrogen-nuclear magnetic resonance(H-nMR).Results indicated the presence of(1)a sterol in the yellow colored CI fraction;(2)a mixture of pheophorbides a and b in the major green fraction,CII;and(3)a modified pheophorbide a in the smaller green fraction,*** extracts of the C endosymbiont did not show evidence of the occurrence of C-phycocyanin,allophycocyanin or phycoerithrin(light absorption,fluorescence emission,and electrophoresis of the protein moieties)while cyanobacterial cells(nostoc sp.)showed evidence of C-phycocyanin and *** possible phylogenetic and functional significance of the pigments present in the C endosymbiont is discussed.
