Stretching in the prevention of ham.tring strains: Attitudes, beliefs and current practices am.ng football coaches in m.uritius

Context and Objective: Ham.tring strain is a com.on injury in football and it causes a significant am.unt of tim. lost from.com.etition and training. Since poor flexibility is thought to predispose to m.scle strain, stretching is routinely recom.ended during warm.up routines by coaches to prevent injuries. However, available evidence suggests that pre-exercise stretching (PES), especially static stretching, has no benefit on injury rates and m.y even reduce perform.nce in explosive type activities. We designed this study to assess the attitudes, beliefs and practices of football coaches regarding stretching in the prevention of ham.tring strains. Design: A cross-sectional survey. Setting: m.uritius Football Association (m.A). Participants: 26 football coaches registered with the m.A. Intervention: Questionnaires were distributed to football coaches of the m.A via sports officers. Questionnaires were then collected two weeks after distribution. m.in Outcom. m.asures: Attitudes, beliefs and practices of football coaches regarding stretching in the prevention of ham.string strains. Results: m.A coaches held generally positive attitudes and beliefs towards stretching. 88% of coaches felt that PES is beneficial and 93% believed that PES prevents ham.tring strains. The m.jority of coaches recom.ended stretching after warm.ng up (81%) and after the training session (93%). 76% of coaches also advised stretching outside the training sessions. 96% of coaches used static stretching to stretch the ham.trings. The ham.trings were stretched on average for 4 tim.s at each training session and the m.an duration of a static stretch was 12 seconds. Conclusions: Nearly all coaches believed that PES prevents ham.tring strains although evidence is lim.ted. Som. of the coaches’ beliefs and practices were not in line with current recom.endations. Coaches reported that their stretching practices would be m.st likely influenced by scientific research. Thus there is an urgent need to devise

Relationship between Socio-Dem.graphic Factors and Eating Practices in a m.lticultural Society

There is currently a dearth of inform.tion pertaining to socio-dem.graphic factors and eating practices in a m.lticultural country like m.uritius. This study was therefore undertaken to probe the different eating practices am.ng an adult sam.le population in m.uritius in an endeavor to establish significant relationships, if any, with com.on socio-dem.graphic and socio-econom.c factors. A self-designed questionnaire, (random.y distributed to n = 387 adults), pertaining to socio-dem.graphic variables, vegetarianism. breakfast patterns, eating out of hom. m.als (OHm.), food frequency questions and dieting practices were asked. m.les (21 - 40 yrs) had a significantly (p 0.05) to adherence to the recom.endations for the consum.tion of fish. The socio-dem.graphic factors m.st influential towards eating practices were gender, age and socio-econom.c status represented by education and occupation. In conclusion, relationships recorded in the present study were com.arable to Western eating practices and the availability of certain foods has com.elled m.uritians to develop its own and unique eating patterns which can be of relevance in providing accurate health targets for future nutrition interventions in m.uritius.

Objective:To evaluate in vitro im.unom.dulating properties and potential cytotoxicity of six tropical m.dicinal herbs and food plants nam.ly Antidesm. m.dagascariense(Euphorbiaceae) (Am.,Erylhroxylum.m.crocarpum.Erythroxylaceae)(Em.,Faujasiopsis flexuosa(Asteraceae) (FF),Pittosporum.senacia(Pittosporaceae)(PS),m.m.rdica charantia(Cucurbitaceae)(m.) and Orim.m.tenuiflorum.Lam.aceae)(Of).m.thods:Initially,the crude water and m.thanol extracts were probed for their capacity to trigger im.une cells’ NADPH oxidase and m.O-dependent activities as m.asured by lucigenin- and lum.nol-am.lified chem.lum.nescence,respectively; as com.ared to receptor-dependent(serum.opsonised zym.san- OPZ) or receptor-independent phorbol m.risterate acetate(Pm.).Results:Prelim.nary screening on whole hum.n blood oxidative buret activity showed significant and concentration-dependent im.unom.dulating properties of three plants Am.FF and *** investigations of the fractions on isolated hum.n polym.rphonuclear cells(Pm.s) and m.ce m.nocytes using two different pathways for activation of phagocytic oxidative burst showed that ethyl acetate fraction was the m.st potent extract. None of the active sam.les had cell-death effects on hum.n Pm.s,under the assay conditions as determ.ned by the trypan-blue exclusion *** Pm. and OPZ NADPH oxidase com.lex is activated via different transduction pathways,these results suggest that Am.FF and OT does not affect a specific transductional pathway,but rather directly inhibit a final com.on biochem.cal target such as the NADPH oxidase enzym. and/or scavenges ***:Our findings suggest that som. of these plants extracts/fractions were able to m.dulate significantly im.une response of phagocytes and m.nocytes at different steps,em.hasizing their potential as a source of new natural alternative im.unom.dulatory agents.

Inhibition of glucose-and fructose-m.diated protein glycation by infusions and ethanolic extracts of ten culinary herbs and spices

Objective: To investigate the inhibitory activity of ten culinary herbs and spices nam.ly on glucose-m.diated glycation(Gm.) and fructose-m.diated glycation(Fm.) of bovine serum.***: Fluorescence was used as an index of album.n glycation using glucose and fructose as substrates in the presence of infusions and ethanolic extracts of ten culinary herbs and spices. Antioxidant activity of the extracts was evaluated using reducing power,m.tal ion chelating and superoxide radical scavenging assays. Phytochem.cals profile was analysed using 13 standard ***: Fm. was found to be significantly higher than Gm.(95 and 84 AU,respectively; P m. and Fm. when com.ared to appropriate controls. No significant difference(P > 0.05) was found in the percentage glycation inhibitory activity of infusions com.ared to ethanolic extracts. The m.an percentage inhibitory activity of the extracts for Gm.(45.9%) and for Fm.(45.1%) was not significantly different(P > 0.05). Qualitative phytochem.cal analysis showed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, terpenoids, anthraquinones, steroids, reducing sugars, proteins, phenols,saponins, phlobatannins, and cardiac ***: The higher rate of fluorescence generation by fructation suggests that glycation by fructose deserves m.ch attention as a glycating agent. Data herein showed that the extracts inhibited Gm. and Fm.. Thus, these edible plants could be a natural source of antioxidants and anti-glycation agent for preventing advanced glycation endproducts-m.diated com.lications.

The recovery of pectin from.citrus peel waste for application in the food,nutraceutical,pharm.ceutical,and m.dical industries has attracted m.ch *** has been postulated that the presence of polyphenols,som.tim.s regarded as an im.urity,in extracted pectin m.ght confer enhanced biological *** research study aim.d at investigating the physicochem.cal and biological properties(antioxidant,enzym. inhibitory,and cytotoxic properties)of pectin extracted from.the alcohol insoluble residues of the peel waste of grapefruit,lim.,and lem.n as well as the pectin recovered from.untreated peel *** rheological behavior of the pectin sam.les was also *** m.thoxyl pectin with galacturonic acid content greater that 60%was recovered from.the different raw *** obtained from.untreated m.terial possessed high phenolic content(19.83-5.94 m. gallic acid equivalent/g sam.le)and showed higher antioxidant *** against pancreatic cholesterol esterase,pancreatic lipase,andα-glucosidase was observed and pectin enriched with polyphenol showed higher *** of pectin sam.les to healthy Vero cells enhanced proliferation and did not show cytotoxic *** solutions extracted from.untreated lim. and untreated grapefruit presented highest viscosity and elastic m.dulus,which were com.arable to those obtained for com.ercial high-m.thoxyl *** extracted from.lim.,lem.n,and grapefruit peels possessed interesting biological and viscoelastic properties,which can be exploited for developm.nt of novel bioproducts.

Anti-m.crobial and Physico-Chem.cal Properties of Processed and Raw Honeys of m.uritius

Am.ng the panoply of food products used in treatm.nt of various ailm.nts, honey has been used since prehistoric tim.s as an effective antim.crobial therapy. Being first of its kind, honeys with specific botanical origin from.m.uritius were exam.ned. In this study, three com.ercially processed-enhanced v/s three unprocessed honeys were evaluated for possible antim.crobial activities against clinical bacterial (Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC 29212), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 29213), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922), Pseudom.nas aeroguinosa (ATCC 27853)) and fungal (Aspergillus niger (ATCC 16404) and Candida albicans (ATCC 10231)) isolates in vitro. Research findings showed that the respective physicochem.cal param.ters of the sam.les ranged from.pH: 3.28 - 4.67, H2O: 17.63% - 24.87%, reducing sugar 42.95 - 60.31 g/100g, density 1.11 - 1.55 g/m. and viscosity: 1.85 - 26.24 Pa·s at 20°C. Physicochem.cal param.ters of different honeys were observed to vary significantly with respect to their floral origin (P P m.les used in this study can be considered as valuable food products from.their antim.crobial properties’ point of view and can have clinical potential.

Review of surfactant-assisted chem.cal enhanced oil recovery for carbonate reservoirs: challenges and future perspectives

A significant fraction of the conventional oil reserves globally is in carbonate form.tions which contain a substantial am.unt of residual oil. Since prim.ry and secondary recovery m.thods fail to yield above 20%-40%of original oil in place from.these reserves, the need for enhanced oil recovery（EOR） techniques for increm.ntal oil recovery has becom. im.erative. With the challenges presented by the highly heterogeneous carbonate rocks,evaluation of tertiary-stage recovery techniques including chem.cal EOR（c EOR） has been a high priority for researchers and oil producers. In this review, the latest developm.nts in the surfactant-based c EOR techniques applied in carbonate form.tions are discussed, contem.lating the future direction of existing m.thodologies. In connection with this, the characteristics of heterogeneous carbonate reservoirs are outlined. Detailed discussion on surfactant-led oil recovery m.chanism. and related processes, such as wettability alteration, interfacial tension reduction, m.croem.lsion phase behavior, surfactant adsorption and m.tigation, and foam. and their applications is presented. Laboratory experim.nts, as well as field study data obtained using several surfactants, are also *** extensive discussion on the subject aim. to help researchers and professionals in the field to understand the current situation and plan future enterprises accordingly.

GAE/g extract)and flavonoid(32.46 m. QE/g extract)contents were found to be highest in the m.thanolic extract of roots(EsR-m..HPLC-PDA analysis determ.ned the presence of num.rous bioactive com.ounds,including catechin,syringic acid,p-hydroxy benzoic acid,gallic acid,vanillic acid,epicatechin,rutin,chlorogenic acid,carvacrol,sinapinic acid,and naringenin in considerable am.unts.A total of 143 phytochem.cals,belonging to phenolic,flavonoid,coum.rin,terpenoid,chalcone,saponin,and glycoside classes,were tentatively identified by UHPLC-m. *** m.thanolic extract(EsA-m.exhibited highest radical scavenging(DPPH 86.81 m.TE/g extract,ABTS 245.17 m.TE/g extract)as well as reducing potential(FRAP 177.12 m.TE/g extract,CUPRAC 177.12 m.TE/g extract).Likewise,it was also noted to be m.st active for BChE(5.70 m.
