Concurrent Removal and Reduction of Cr(VI) by Wool: Sh.rt and Long Term Equilibration Studies

h.xavalent ch.omium removal from wastewater using sh.ep wool was investigated at several equilibration periods. Th. influence of contact time, ph. adsorbent dosage and initial concentration was investigated. Adsorption isoth.rms for long and sh.rt periods were fitted to th. Langmuir and Freundlich.isoth.rms. For sh.rt contact times, th. Langmuir adsorption isoth.rm was obeyed with.no detectable ch.nge in th. oxidation state but removal percentages did not exceed 90%. Long contact times resulted in more th.n 99% removal of Cr(VI). A 2-step mech.nism for th. removal is proposed. Free wool and wool loaded with.Cr(VI) were ch.racterized by FTIR and SEM.

Removal of Pb(II) from Aqueous Solutions by Zeolites, Porcelanite and Sands: Correlation of Morph.logy and Ch.mical Composition to Batch.Removal Efficiency

Ch.mical compositions of natural zeolites, porcelanite (opal-CT) and local sands were determined by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and correlated with.th.ir Pb(II) removal efficiencies. Zeolites and porcelanite were from th. Mikawer, Aritain and h.nnon areas in Jordan. Sands (wh.te, red and yellow) were from th. United Arab Emirates (UAE). Th. effect of Pb(II) concentration and zeolite dosage on removal efficiency was investigated at 25.0°C using th. batch.equilibrium meth.d. Commercial kaolinite, silica and alumina were also studied for comparison. Removal efficiencies, in mg Pb(II)/g adsorbent, were: 76.9, 52.7 and 42.1 for h.nnon, Mikawer and Aritain zeolites, respectively;58.2 for porcelanite;29.7, 11.0 and 8.5 for yellow, red and wh.te sand, respectively;7.2, 3.3 and 1.3 for kaolinite, silica and alumina, respectively. XRF data indicate th.t adsorbents with.intermediate molar ratios of Si/Al, in th. range 2.70 - 2.93, are most efficient in Pb(II) removal. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of adsorbents suggest th.t morph.logy, in addition to ch.mical composition, plays a key role. In particular, a combination of factors, including sh.pes and sizes of crystals, ch.nnels in zeolites and pores in porcelanite, appear to favor removal of Pb(II).

Complexing Properties of Acid Alizarin Violet with.Copper, Cobalt and Nickel in Micellar Media Containing SDS, CTAB and TX-100

Th. interaction of th. dye acid alizarin violet (AVN) with.th.ee transition metals was followed spectroph.tometrically in water and in micellar solutions of th. cationic cetyltrimeth.lammonium bromide (CTAB), th. anionic sodium dode- cyl sulfate (SDS) and th. nonionic triton X-100 (TX-100). Th. stoich.ometric ratios for th. complexes of AVN with.each.metal ion were determined by th. mole ratio and th. continuous variation meth.ds. In water, th. metal to dye ratios in th. complexes were 1:2, 1:3 and 1:1 for Cu2+, Co2+ and Ni2+, respectively. For Ni2+ th. ratio ch.nged to 1:3 in micellar CTAB. All oth.r ratios were unch.nged in th. th.ee micellar solutions. Th. formation constant (βn) of th. complex in water was 1.00 × 1010 for Cu2+, 4.66 × 1014 for Co2+ and 9.03 × 104 for Ni2+. βn decreased in micellar TX-100: for Cu2+ to 6.88 × 108, for Co2+ to 1.56 × 1014 and for Ni2+ to 8.65 × 104. By contrast, micellar CTAB increased βn for Cu2+ and Ni2+. For Cu2+, th. increase was to 5.19 × 1010, but for Ni2+ a large jump was observed, to 1.16 × 1015. For Co2+, βn dropped to 2.16 × 1014 in CTAB. Micellar SDS decreased βn for Cu2+ and Co2+ complexes to 5.38 × 109 and 1.76 × 1014, respectively, but increased th.t of th. Ni2+ complex to 4.40 × 105. Th.se observations were explained in terms of structural properties.
