Effect of Aqueous Extract of Boscia senegalensis on Hyperglycemia, Hyperlipidemia and Oxidative Stress Induced in Rats

Boscia aqueous extract. senegalensis on hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia and oxidative stress induced in rats. The aqueous extract was prepared from B. senegalensis seed powders under the extraction conditions: time (10 min), temperature (55˚C) and the ratio of mass of flour/volume of water (3/10 g/mL). Male wistar rats aged 6 to 8 weeks were acclimated and divided into 8 groups of 5 rats each: two normal control groups which received a normal standard diet (3810 kcal/kg), and six test groups which were subjected to a hyperlipidemic diet (5310 Kcal/kg). All groups of animals were fed in this manner for 8 weeks to induce hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia and oxidative stress. After induction the animals were treated either with distilled water for the normal and negative control groups or with atorvastatin for the positive control group or with the extract of B. senegalensis. (125, 250 and 500 mg/kg) for the test groups. Fasting blood glucose was taken every 7 days during induction. After sacrifice, biochemical and oxidative stress parameters were measured. The aqueous extract of B. senegalensis significantly decreased (p B. senegalensis at a dose of 500 mg/kg has the capacity to reduce blood sugar, improve the quality of the lipid profile and reduce oxidative stress. Thus, the results reveal that the aqueous extract of B. senegalensis has powerful hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic and antioxidant properties.

In Benin, market gardening has become a new profession and plays an important role in the supply of fresh vegetables. In the coastal regions, fish farming is practiced on the outskirts of market gardening sites. However, poorly regulated cultivation practices and increasing pollution do not necessarily guarantee the sanitary quality of the products delivered. This study aims to evaluate the physico-chemical qualities of the water used for watering and, secondly, the lead and cadmium contamination of the water used for watering, the soil (sediment) and the fish products (fish) on the urban market gardening perimeter in the commune of Lokossa in Benin. These various samples taken for this purpose were analysed at the Ministry of Health’s Water and Food Quality Control Laboratory. We noted pollution of organic elements through the physico-chemical parameters measured such as temperature, NTK, COD, BOD and total phosphorus and confirmed by average lead and cadmium levels of 0.42 mg/L in water, 0.52 mg/L in sediment and 0.31 mg/L to 0.76 mg/L in fish tissue (Carp and Catfish) for lead and 0.07 mg/L in water, 0.1 mg/L in sediment and 0.5 mg/L in fish for cadmium. These rates are well above the normal values accepted by the GESAMP, PNEC INERIS and FAO standards. The consequences of this contamination are health risks for consumers.

Partial Amputation of the Penis with Total Rupture of the Urethra: About a Case in the Urology Department of the Bonamoussadi District Medical Center

Penis amputations are rare, they are most often observed in a criminal context or in the context of self-mutilation. We present the case of a partial amputation of the shaft in the context of a domestic accident. This is a 53-year-old patient received in the emergency department for partial amputation of the penis occurred, whose mechanism of occurrence would be the fall of a sheet metal from the roof of his house, with reception on the proximal end of the shaft leading to a partial rupture of it—here, with total urethral section. He has no medical-surgical history. The physical examination finds a good general condition, a partial tearing of the ventral face of the penis associated with a total rupture of the urethra followed by a hemorrhage, the rest of the examination was without particularity. The emergency assessment carried out was without particularity. The treatment consisted initially of catheterizing the urethra by a urinary tube ch 20, then a urethral replacement, followed by a Peno plastie. The surgical suites were enamelled with parietal suppuration plus necrosis at J 14 post-operative. A more bidaily dressing debridement followed with a favorable evolution at 2 months. Subsequently, a penile graft was performed more urethrolastic, with removal of the flap on the inner side of the thigh, the surgical suites were favorable on the sexual plane gradual resumption of night erections.

Aluminum （AI）, Vanadium （V）, Chromium （Cr）, Manganese （Mn）, Iron （Fe）, Strontium （Sr）, Molybdenum （Mo）, Silver （Ag）, Cadmium （Cd）, Tin （Sn）, Caesium （Cs）, Barium （Ba）, Lead （Pb）, Bismuth （Bi） and Uranium （U） concentrations were investigated in water samples from fifteen sampling locations in Naviundu river basin, Luano and Ruashi rivers and Luwowoshi spring in Lubumbashi city during February, March and April 2016. Chemical analyses of the samples were carried out using Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometer. Water pH was determined using a pH-meter and mean pH values ranged from 4.2 to 5.8. The highest mean levels of Al （5,961.954 μg·L^-1）, Pb （472.287 μg·L^-1）, V （21.014 μg·L^-1）, Cr （8.185μg·L^-1）, U （4.163μg·L^-1） and Bi （0.012 μg·L^-1） were recorded in Chemaf （Chemicals of Africa） hydrometallurgical plant effluent, those of Mn （29,714.593 μg·L^-1）, Sr （374.377μg·L^-1）, Cd （11.358μg·L^-1） and Cs （0.107μg·L^-1） in Naviundu river at Cimenkat （Katanga＇s Cement Factory） exit, those of Fe （14,258.9 μg·L^-1） and Ba （307.641μg·L^-1） in Luano river and those of Ag （2.669 μg·L^-1）, Mo （0.559 μg·L^-1） and Sn （0.325 μg·L^-1） were respectively noted in Foire channel, Naviundu river under bridge on Kasenga road and Kalulako river. The concentrations of Cd in Naviundu river at Cimenkat exit （11.358 μg·L^-1）, Chemaf bydrometallurgical plant effluent （9.697μg·L^-1）, Naviundu river under bridge on De Plaines Avenue （6.95 μg·L^-1） and Kalulako river （3.229 μg·L^-1）, Pb concentrations in Chemaf hydrometallurgical plant effluent （472.287 μg·L^-1） as well as the AI, Fe and Mn concentrations recorded in most waters in this study exceeded the WHO （World Health Organization） maximum permissible limits for drinking water. The metal contamination of waters of the studied rivers, channel and spring might be partially attributed to natural processes, unplanned urbanization and poor waste management, and mostly to abandoned and ongoing mining and ore processing activities in Lubumbashi

Assessing Comprehensive Sexuality Education Programs in the Democratic Republic of the Congo: Adolescents’ and Teachers’ Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices towards Contraception

Introduction: Improving teenagers’ knowledge on sexual and reproductive health (SRH) is important to prevent unintended pregnancies. We aimed to assess comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) programs and knowledge, attitudes and practices of adolescents and teachers towards contraception. Methods: Based on the reasoned action theory and CSE guidelines, a qualitative study was conducted with seven teachers and 62 adolescents aged 15 - 19. The data were collected through six focus groups (FG) of adolescents and seven semi-structured interviews of teachers. The program of the family life education course (FLEC) was assessed. The Atlas Ti software helped to analyze the data, using a deductive approach. Results: The periodic abstinence, male condoms and pills were the most known contraceptive methods. Adolescents and teachers were reluctant to use artificial contraceptive methods, apart from the male condom which they used irregularly. Girls especially preferred natural contraceptive methods, fearing side effects, such as the risk of infertility. Almost all adolescents wanted to be informed on SRH and family planning in school

As （Arsenic）, Ba （Barium）, Cr （Chromium）, Cu （Copper）, Fe （Iron）, Mne （Manganese）, Pb （Lead） and Zn （Zinc） concentrations were investigated in sediments collected from fifteen sampling locations in Naviundu river basin, Luano and Ruashi rivers and Luwowoshi spring in Lubumbashi city from February to April 2016. Chemical analyses of the samples were carried out using a portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometer. Mean pH values ranged from 4.2 to 5.8. The sediment highest mean levels of As （40 mg·kg^-1·dw） and Cu （3,723 mg·kg^-1 ·dw） were noted in Chemaf （Chemicals of Africa） hydrometallurgical plant effluent, those of Pb （51.5mg·kg^-1·dw） and Zn （335mg·kg^-1·dw） were recorded in Kabecha river and those of Ba （657.5mg·kg^-1·dw）, Cr （75 mg·kg^-1·dw）, Mn （591 mg·kg^-1·dw） and Fe （88,450mg·kg^-1·dw） were respectively found in Naviundu river at Cimenkat （Katanga＇s Cement factory） exit, Naviundu river under bridge on De Plaines avenue, Mukulu river and Foire channel. Mean As, Cu and Zn levels of sediments exceeded the corresponding SQGs （Sediment Quality Guidelines）, PELs （Probable Effect Levels） in some of the studied rivers. They could have adverse effects on aquatic organisms in those rivers and on the health of people who depend on the rivers for water supply, irrigation and/or recreation.

目的:评价上颌快速扩弓联合前牵引对安氏Ⅲ类错患者咽腔和舌位置的影响。方法:对17名不伴有呼吸障碍的青少年安氏Ⅲ类错患者实施上颌快速扩弓联合前牵引矫治。于矫治前后拍摄头颅侧位定位片,对矫治后舌位置、上气道矢状径及相关数据进行统计学分析。结果:矫治结束后患者反解除,上齿槽座点(A点)前移,下颌发生顺时针旋转,舌姿势处于与腭穹更加接近的位置,上气道矢状径增加。结论:上颌快速扩弓联合前牵引矫治可以在短期内增加上气道矢状径及改善舌位置,矫治结果有利于口颌形态及功能的改善。

Concentrations of fifteen trace metals including Aluminum （Al）, Vanadium （V）, Chromium （Cr）, Manganese （Mn）, Iron （Fe）, Strontium （Sr）, Molybdenum （Mo）, Silver （Ag）, Cadmium （Cd）, Tin （Sn）, Caesium （Cs）, Barium （Ba）, Lead （Pb）, Bismuth （Bi） and Uranium （U） were investigated in water samples collected from sixteen sampling locations in the Lubumbashi river basin and five locations in Kafubu, Kimilolo and Kinkalabwamba rivers during February, March and April 2016. Chemical analyses of the samples were carried out using ICP-MS （Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometer）. Water pH was determined using a pH-meter and pH values ranged from 4.2 to 7.8. The highest mean trace metal levels of water were 5,515.816 ）μg·L^-1, 166.925μg·L^-1, 3.898μg·L^-1 and 1.879μg·L^-1 for Al, Ba, Cr and U, respectively in Kashobwe river, 2,419.522 μg·L^-1 and 17.994 μg·L^-1 for Fe and Cd, respectively in Kafubu river at its confluence with Lubumbashi rivers, 1,408.136μg·L^-1 for Mn in Kafubu river 1.36 kilometer downward its confluence with Naviundu river, 222.406 μg·L^-1 and 0.092 μg·L^-1 for Sr and Cs, respectively in Kamalondo river 60 meters from the GCM-Lubumbashi （General of Quarries and Mines-Lubumbashi） smelter, 140.294μg·L^-1, 12.063 μg·L^-1 and 0.008μg·L^-1 for Pb, V and Bi, respectively in Munua river, 3.544 μg·L^-1 for Ag in Kabulameshi river, 1.49 μg·L^-1 for Mo in Kafubu river and 0.081μg·L^-1 for Sn in Tshondo river. The mean concentrations of Al, Cd, Fe, Mn and Pb in water of many rivers and the channel exceeded the maximum admissible limits of the WHO （World Health Organization）, USEPA （United States Environmental Protection Agency） and EU （European Union） drinking-water standards. Trace metal contamination of water of the studied rivers, channel and springs might be partially attributed to natural processes, unplanned urbanization, poor waste management and mostly to abandoned and ongoing mining and ore processing activities in Lubumbashi city.

Consolidation of a Femoral Neck Fracture in Sickle Cell Disease Patient after Surgical Abstention: A Beneficial and Favorable Outcome

Femoral neck fracture is classically a traumatic pathology in the elderly but it can also occur in young people during a road traffic accident or occasionally when the femoral neck has been weakened by a pathological process. In sickle cell patients, the hip is often subjected to aseptic necrosis. The authors report the case of the child NL, aged 5 years and 4 months in whom a fracture of the femoral neck classified Delbet 3 was found as well as his sickle cell status discovered and in whom treatment by surgical abstention was carried out with a favorable evolution. This association of factors of the femoral head necrosis or nonunion is unusual and confirms the osteogenetic potential of a child. However, monitoring is necessary because other anomalies may reveal themselves.
