Probabilistic Analysis of Reinforced Concrete Carbonation Depth

Concrete carbonation relates to the diffusion of CO2 inthe atmosphere through the concrete pores and to the dissolution of the hydrates. A great deal of uncertainty still remains in this subject as a result of the random nature of the infiltration of these aggressive agents as well as the material and structural properties of reinforced concrete. Consequently, in order to determine the degradation of these structures with time, it is necessary to approach the subject from a probabilistic point of view that it considers the uncertainties involved with the geometrical dimensions of these structures, with the material characteristics and with the environment and the subsequent deterioration that it provokes. The aim of this paper is the evaluation of carbonation depth (Xc) from a probabilistic analysis, focusing specifically on the study of the randomness of the most influential parameters on the reinforced concrete carbonation.

Carbonic Gas Randomness Effect on Reinforced Concrete Carbonation

This paper deals the randomness effect of the pressure of carbonic gas on the carbonation phenomenon of the reinforced concrete. This analysis concentrates on the evaluation of carbonation depth (Xc) and the carbonation time (T1) which is the time necessary so that the face of carbonation arrives until the reinforcement from a probabilistic analysis. Monte Carlo simulations are realized under the assumption that the carbonic gas on the surface of the concrete is random variable with a log-normal probability distribution.

Effect of Clay Fines on the Behavior of Self-Compacting Concrete

The technology of concrete has significantly increased in recent years through the use of super plasticizer and availability of mineral additions. One of the most recent materials used as an additive, replacing a portion of cement in concrete, is fine clay fired at a temperature of 800℃ to 900℃. This research is based on trials that complied with artificial pozzolan (waste crushed brick), and their effect on the rheological and mechanical behavior of mortar. The addition of 5% of a waste crushed brick has helped not only to improve the strength (tensile and compression), but also to foster a better rheological behavior in terms of fluidity and stability, with a low heat of hydration compared to control. However, tests of optimizing the content of self-compacting concrete (SCC) in coarse aggregates, sand and binder, led us to confirm that the combined mass of more optimal (better workability and stability) is that based on low in volumetric percentage of sand/paste with a granular skeleton richest gravel low dimensions (2/3 of G 3/8 and 1/3 of G 8/15).

Influence of the Addition of Sand and Compaction on the Mechanical and Thermal Performances of Plaster

Since antiquity, man used to stock up materials and products existing in his close surroundings to build his house, which provides him shelter and comfort. Within the present work, mixtures of plaster and dune sand have been studied with the aim of valorization of locally abundant materials. The tests showed that with the addition of dune sand and the compaction, an optimal mixture (67% plaster and 33% dune sand) can be used as a carrier element for construction of up to three levels;since significant increase of the mechanical strength has been observed. The element obtained offers an acceptable thermal insulation with a decrease in the thickness of the outer wall construction. The use of this gypsum’s mortar block as a carrier element in a structure not exceeding three levels, also enables a considerable savings especially in areas where sand and plaster are abundant and relatively inexpensive.
