Wheat Production and Wheat Rust Management in Canada

Wheat is Canada's the largest crop with most of the production in the western Canadian Prairie Provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. There were approximately 10 million (M) hectares (hm2) seeded to wheat in Canada, including 7 M hm2 of hexaploid spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), 2 M hm2 of durum wheat (T. turgidum L. ssp. durum (Desf.) Husn.), and 1 M hm2 of winter wheat (T. aestivum). Within hexaploid wheat there has been diversification into a number of market classes based on different end-use quality criteria. The predominant spring bread wheat class has been the Canada Western Red Spring (CWRS) class. Historically, the disease of major concern in wheat was stem rust, caused by Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici. The first significant stem rust resistant cultivar in Canada was Thatcher, grown extensively from 1939 until the early 1970s. Thatcher, however, was very susceptible to leaf rust, caused by Puccinia triticina. Over years, improved resistance to both stem and leaf rust was achieved with the release of cultivars with additional genes for resistance, primarily Sr2, Sr6, Sr7a, Sr9b, Lr13, Lr14a, Lr16, and Lr34. The genetic resistance has adequately controlled stem rust but leaf rust continues to cause significant loss, partially due to changes in the P. triticina population which reduced the effectiveness of resistance genes such as Lr13 and Lr16. Stripe rust on wheat, caused by Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici, was historically a problem under irrigation in southern Alberta, but since 2000, it has been found annually in the central Canadian prairies and southern Ontario. The genetic basis of resistance to stripe rust in most Canadian wheat cultivars has not been determined, although Yr18 provides partial resistance in many cultivars. 目的在儿童霍奇金淋巴瘤（HL）的治疗中,采取反应适应性治疗策略来减少不良反应非常重要,然而关于充分或不充分治疗反应的定义仍存在争议。为确定18F-脱氧葡萄糖（FDg）PET/CT（PET）预测疾病结局的最佳方法,拟对3种不同方法进行比较。方法根据修订的国际协调项目标准（IHP）和Deauville标准对72例HL患儿治疗前基线、治疗中期、治疗结束后的PET显像结果进行解读。用受试者工作特征（ROC）曲线获得治疗中期和治疗结束后FDg最大标准摄取值的变化值(△SUVmax),用于预测无进展生存（PFS）。比较定量数据与可视化图像数据预测PFS的效能。结果原发病灶治疗中期和治疗结束后平均△SUVmax分别为（77.4±19.5）%、（68.8±30.4）%,截断值为82%和73%。只有治疗结束后△SUVmax对3年PFS的预测有统计学意义（P=0.043）。根据文献报道的截断值（66%和77%）进一步分析治疗中期△SUVmax,结果仍不具统计学意义（P=0.604和0.431）。对于治疗中期评价,IHP标准与Deauville标准（P=0.002和0.001）和△SUVmax（P=0.03）相关;而对于治疗后评价,IHP标准与△SUVmax明显相关（P=0.04）,但与Deauville标准的相关性不明显（P=0.055和0.058）。1年、3年和5年PFS分别为（95.7±0.2）%、（89.6±0.4）%和（80.8±0.7）%。3种方法在预测3年PFS方面表现相当,但是治疗中期使用Deauville标准和治疗结束后使用IHP标准进行评估更具意义。3种方法都显示出较高的阴性预测价值和较低的阳性预测价值。结论在儿童HL预后评估中,治疗中期用Deauville标准解读PET显像结果优于其他方法,而在治疗结束后可以使用IHP标准进行定量分析和视觉评估。研究得出的SUVmax降低的最佳截断值是73%。

Comparative study of the side effect profiles of oral misoprostol and parenteral oxytocin used in prevention of postpartum haemorrhage in Maiduguri Nigeria

The following work compared adverse effects profile and patients’ acceptability of intra-venous oxytocin 10 iu and oral misoprostol 600 ug used in the prevention of postpartum hemorrhage in the third stage of labour. A total of 1865 pregnant women who have received either oxytocin injection or oral misoprostol in third stage of labour as prophylaxis for postpartum haemorrhage, were enrolled within three health care facilities in Maiduguri, Nigeria. Each patient was observed at parturition and for 24 h after during which oral interviews were conducted and clinical notes studied. The oxytocin medication group exhibited higher abdominal pains (7.1% versus 0.0%;p 0.05) difference in patients acceptability of injectable oxytocin (99.3%) and oral misoprostol (98.3%). Oxytocin usage in the prevention of PPH was associated with abdominal pains and headache while misoprostol was associated with shivering and fever. Patients from this study have demonstrated high level of acceptability of both parenteral oxytocin and oral misopristol prevention of post-partum haemorrhage.

Potential of Terpenoid Bioactive Compound Isolated from Papua Ant Nest as an Alternative Ovarian Cancer Treatment

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine anticancer activity of terpenoid bioactive compound isolated from Papua ant nest on ovarian cancer cells in vitro. Methods: This was a laboratory experimental study which aims to determine the potential of the terpenoid bioactive compound isolated from Papua ant nest to inhibit the growth and induce apoptotic process on ovarian cancer cells (SKO-3) in vitro. Result: Terpenoid had capability to inhibit the growth of ovarian cancer cell line (SKO-3) in vitro, with IC50 of 481 ug/ml at 48 hours and 463 ug/ml at 48 hours, respectively. At a concentration of 600 ug/ml, terpenoid was able to induce apoptotic process on ovarian cancer cell lines in vitro with the apoptotic index of 30% at 24 hours, 35% at 48 hours and 37% at 72 hours, respectively. Conclusion: Terpenoid bioactive compound isolated from Papua ant nest had the ability to inhibit the growth and was able to induce apoptotic process on ovarian cancer cell lines (SKO-3) in vitro.

Surface measurements of aerosol physical properties were made at Anantapur （14.62°N, 77.65°E, 331 m a.s.l）, a semiarid rural site in India, during August 2008-July 2009. Measurements included the segregated sizes of aerosolsas as well as total mass concentration and size distributions of aerosols measured at low relative humidity （RH〈75%） using a Quartz Crystal Microbalance （QCM） in the 25-0.05 um aerodynamic diameter range. The hourly average total surface aerosol mass concentration in a day varied from 15 to 70 ug m-3, with a mean value of 34.02±9.05 ug m-3 for the entire study period. A clear diurnal pattern appeared in coarse, accumulation and nucleation-mode particle concentrations, with two local maxima occurring in early morning and late evening hours. The concentration of coarse-mode particles was high during the summer season, with a maximum concentration of 11.81±0.98 ug m-3 in the month of April, whereas accumulationmode concentration was observed to be high in the winter period contributed 〉68% to the total aerosol mass concentration. Accumulation aerosol mass fraction, Af （= Ma/Mt） was highest during winter （mean value of Af -0.80） and lowest （Af - 0.64） during the monsoon season. The regression analysis shows that both Reff and Rm are dependent on coarse-mode aerosols. The relationship between the simultaneous measurements of daily mean aerosol optical depth at 500 nm （AOD500） and PM2.5 mass concentration （[PM2.5]） shows that surface-level aerosol mass concentration increases with the increase in columnar aerosol optical depth over the observation period.

AIM:To assess the effectiveness of hepatitis B virus(HBV) vaccination program among fully vaccinated ***:A national community based crosssectional study was carried out in 6 governorates representing Egypt. A total of 3600 children aged from 9 mo to 16 years who were fully vaccinated with HBV vaccine during infancy were recruited. Face to face interviews were carried out and sera were evaluated for hepatitis B surface antigen(HBsA g),anti-HBV core antibodies(total) and quantitative detection of hepatitis B surface antibody using enzyme linked immunoassays techniques. Samples positive to HBs Ag/anti-HBV core antibodies were subjected to quantitative HBV-DNA detection by real time polymerase chain reaction with 3.8 IU/L detection limit. RESULTS:Sero-protection was detected among 2059 children(57.2%) with geometric mean titers 75.4 ± 3.6 IU/L compared to 3.1 ± 2.1 IU/L among nonseroprotected children. Multivariate logistic analysis revealed that older age and female gender were the significant predicting variables for having non seroprotective level,with adjusted odds ratio 3.3,9.1and 14.2 among children aged 5 to g girls compared to boys with P g was positive in 0.11% and breakthrough infection was 0.36% and 0.39% depending on positivity of anti-HBc and DNA detection respectively. The prevalence of HBV infection was significantly higher among children aged ≥ 7 years(0.59%) compared to 0.07% among younger children with odds ratio equal to 8.4(95%CI:1.1-64.2) and P gher among girls(0.48%) than boys(0.29%) with P > 0.05. C ON C LU S I ON :T he E gy pt ian c ompuls or y H B V vaccination program provides adequate protection. Occult HBV infection exists among apparently healthy vaccinated children. Adherence to infection control measures is mandatory.

Sensitivity Detection Technique and Resistance Risk Assessment of Magnaporthe grisea to Tricyclazole

In vitro detection method for the sensitivity of Magnaporthe grisea to tricyclazole was studied, and the potential resistance risk of blast disease to tricyclazole was assessed. Both EC50 of hyphal melanization (EC50-H) and minimum inhibitive concentration of melanization in appressorial (MIC-A) by inhibitor tricyclazole showed positive correlation to the EC50 of tricyclazole against blast disease tested in vivo, with relative co-efficiency (R5) of 0.8995 and 0.8244, respectively. However, stability and reproducibility of EC50-H were better than those of MIC-A, suggesting that it could be used to detect the sensitivity of M. grisea to tricyclazole in vitro. Tricyclazole sensitivity of the progenies derived from single spores of the most sensitive isolate DY2 and the least sensitive isolate gY6 detected in sensitivity monitoring in 2000 was not stable, with mean EC50 values of 4.4968 μg/mL and 5.4010 ug/mL, respectively, indicating that the difference in EC50 between DY2 and gY6 was not caused probably by resistance variation. EC50 of gY6 did not increase significantly when continuously selected for twenty generations under the selection pressure of tricyclazole in vivo. However, the sensitivity of DY2 was decreased by 10-fold after selected for twenty generations. The results suggested that tricyclazole was still low resistance risk for M. grisea in China.

Quan Qiong Qin (CQQ) is a plant which grows in China and whose Latin name is Ligusticum wallichiiFrangchat.
