Estimation of the Production Cost of Date Fruits of Cultivar Majhoul (<i>Phoenix dactylifera</i>L.) and Evaluation of the Moroccan Competitiveness towards the Major Exporting Regions in the World

The aim of the present study was to estimate the production cost of dates of cv. Majhoul (Phoenix dactylifera L.) as part of the Moroccan strategy to develop the date palm sector, and to compare it to that reported in the main exporting regions. Data were collected through surveys of farmers and farm owners carried out in the “Meski Boudnib” extension zone during 2018 and 2019, as well as from studies performed by some governmental organizations. The surveys were conducted on 30 modern and productive date palm farms, managed in monoculture and equipped with localized irrigation systems. All fixed and variable costs were calculated. It was found, through our calculations, that the subsidies from the Moroccan government reduce the average investment cost of a modern date palm farm by 56%. It was also shown that the production cost of one ton of date fruits of cv. Majhoul in the extension zone “Meski Boudnib” (Morocco) is estimated at about 6060 MAD (US$ 634.5), out of which 28% represents the labor cost and 23% represents mineral and organic fertilization costs. The findings of the present study revealed that the production cost of one ton of cv. Majhoul dates in “Meski Boudnib” is lower than those reported in the Coachella Valley (20,189 MAD/ton;US$ 2114) and the Jordan Valley (10,536 MAD/ton;US$ 1103).

Effect of Sodium Metabisulphite on Blood Metabolic Status of Wistar Rats

The objective of this work was to determine the sodium metabisulphite (NaMBS) subchronic toxicity used as a food additive in Algeria. Three groups of female Wistar rats were treated with 0.25%, 1% and 4% of NaMBS in their drinking water for 90 days. An immunization protocol was conducted during the experiment. Mortality, comportmental and weight modifications, and food and water consumption were recorded. At the end of the experiment, the control and experiment rats were killed, and their blood and organs were removed. Immunoglobulin levels were evaluated;biochemical and hematological parameters were investigated. Our results showed that the administration of NaMBS at 1% and 4% had significant effects on body weight, food and water consumed. There was an increase in biochemical parameters (calcium, urea, creatinine, uric acid, transaminases) and decrease immunoglobulin levels. The hematology revealed a decrease in red blood cells and hemoglobin, as well as leucocytosis. Physiological study showed enlarged spleen, kidney, liver and stomach. In light of our results, we can conclude that subchronic intake of NaMBS 1% and 4% seems to alter immune function, biochemical, hematological and physiological para-meters in Wistar rats.

Melatonin and Diazepam Affect Anxiety-Like and Depression-Like Behavior in Wistar Rats: Possible Interaction with Central GABA Neurotransmission

Recent studies have shown the importance of the GABA-ergic transmission in the pathophysiology of anxiety and depressive disorders in humans. Our present study aims to investigate the interaction of melatonin (Mel) with this system by exploring the effects of Mel with or without a facilitator of GABA-ergic neurotransmission, diazepam (DZ) on the levels of depression and anxiety in Wistar rats. For this purpose, different doses of Mel (2, 4 or 16 mg/kg) or DZ (2 mg/kg) are subchronically administered during 15 days. After pharmacological treatments, anxiety levels are evaluated in behavioral tests of Open Field (OFT) and elevated plus maze (EPM) and depression levels are evaluated by the forced swim test (FST). The results showed that Mel produces anxiolytic-like and antidepressant-like effects in a dose-dependent manner;the maximum effect was obtained at a dose of 16 mg/kg. However, a dose of 4 mg/kg is necessary to induce an effect. The effect of Mel and DZ reported in this study concerns selective modulation of behavioral anxiety and depression since locomotor activity assessed by the OFT and EPM was not affected. The subchronic injection of Mel at 4 mg/kg, DZ at 2 mg/kg or the two combined molecules also induces also anxiety-like and antidepressant-like behavior. In addition, a potentiating effect between Mel and DZ was observed. These effects suggest that psychopharmacological actions of Mel are due, at least in part, to its ability to improve the central GABA-ergic transmission.

The seminal vesicles of adult sand rat contain a major secretory protein band （MW 21 kDa） designated as Psammomys obesus seminal vesicles protein of 21 kDa （POSVP21）. This protein is abundant in secretions, regulated by androgens and also present in the vaginal plug. POSVP21 accounts for over 22.3% of soluble proteins from homogenate during the breeding season, 13.3% during the middle season and 5.3% during the hormonal regression season. It is absent during the non-breeding season. POSVP21 is localized in the cytoplasm of epithelial cells and in secretory products in the lumen. It presents an immunological homology with two epididymal proteins with the same molecular weight and a high degree of homology with transgelin from rat （Rattus norvegicus）.

Clinical and Genetic Study of Friedreich’s Ataxia and Ataxia with Vitamin E Deficiency in 44 Moroccan Families

Introduction: Friedreich ataxia (FRDA) is a multi-system autosomal-recessive disease, the most common one of the genetically inherited ataxias. FRDA occurs as a consequence of mutations in the frataxin gene, with an expansion of a GAA trinucleotide. Ataxia with vitamin E deficiency (AVED) is characterized clinically by neurological symptoms with often striking resemblance to those of Friedreich’s ataxia (FA) but serum concentrations of vitamin E are low. Aim of study: To study clinical and genetic features of the Friedreich’s ataxia and AVED patients in 44 Moroccan families. Patients and Methods: Retrospective series of 72 Moroccan patients displaying Friedreich’s ataxia syndrome was recruited over a period of 22 years (1987-2009). All patients had a clinical and ophtalmological examinations, 30 patients underwent electromyography, and CT scan was performed in 29 patients. GAA repeats in the frataxin gene and the 744 del A mutation α-TTP gene were performed in all patients. Results: 17 patients (24% of cases) had the 744 del A mutation in the α-TTP gene responsible of ataxia with vitamin E deficiency (AVED) phenotype. 55 patients ?(76% of cases) had GAA expanded allele in the first intron of the frataxin gene. Phenotype-genotype correlation revealed a high frequency of head titubation, decreased visual acuity and slower disease progression in AVED than in Friedreich’s ataxia phenotype (p Our study represents a large series which highlight the clinical and genetic differences between AVED and Friedreich’s ataxia. AVED patients have a better prognosis after alpha-tocopherol treatment.

Vitamin E is one of the most important lipid-soluble antioxidants. It is essential for the neurological function but its role in the central nervous system has not fully been elucidated. It is known that tocopherol acts in protecting cell membranes from oxidative damage and it can act as an anti-in?ammatory agent, which may also be neuroprotective, as well as regulating speci?c enzymes. There is growing evidence that oxidative stress plays a key role in the pathophysiology of several neurodegenerative disorders. These diseases are defined by the progressive loss of speci?c neuronal cell populations and are associated with protein aggregates. We reviewed some aspects related to the role of antioxidant properties of Vitamin E in preventing and/or curing neurodegenerative disorders such as the Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, ataxia, tardive dyskinesia and Huntington’s disease.

Background: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) are the most common mesenchymal tumors of the gastrointestinal tract. GIST are rare during pregnancy. We report here the case of a patient who was admitted in our university hospital for GIST discovered during the second trimester of pregnancy. She was 42 years old, in the fifth months of pregnancy. She was admitted for biliary colic pain with vomiting. On abdominal examination, we objectified a distended abdomen with uterine height of 18 cm and epigastric mass of 10 cm. Abdominal ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a hepatic, tissue and cystic mass, developing at the expense of the left liver. Endoscopy objectified an aspect of extrinsic compression at the front of the stomach. A cesarean was scheduled at the 35th month of pregnancy for fetal extraction and rescue. Exploration of the peritoneal cavity during surgery has objectified a hepatic highly vascularised mass reaching up to the umbilicus. This mass was unresectable. A postoperative CT scan revealed a large bilobed epigastric mass adhering to the stomach and the left liver. Histological and immunohistochemical study of hepatic process showed a gastrointestinal stromal tumor of high risk of malignancy. Conclusion: few cases have been reported in the literature on GIST during pregnancy showing the rarity of the condition that requires multidisciplinary care.

Neuropsychiatric Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by multisystemic involvement and diverse manifestations. Neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus (NPSLE) is a complex neurological disorder characterized by neuropsychological dysfunction. NPSLE is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. In 1999, the American College of Rheumatology developed 19 discrete neuropsychiatric syndromes that comprised NPSLE. Nervous system disease in systemic lupus erythematosus is manifested by a wide variety of clinical manifestations. The pathogenesis of NPSLE is due to autoantibodies, neuronal and non neuronal antigens and the generation of proinflammatory cytokines and mediators. Anatomopathological lesions are attributed to in situ thrombosis, edema, hemorrhage, vasculitis, atherosclerosis or atheroembolism. The diagnosis of NPSLE remains largely one of exclusion and is approached by clinical evaluation, and supported when necessary by autoantibody profiles, diagnostic imaging, electrophysiologic studies and objective assessment of cognitive performance. Brain MRI abnormalities in NPSLE might show small punctate focal lesions in white matter being the most common MRI finding, followed by cortical atrophy, ventricular dilation, cerebral edema, diffuse white matter abnormalities, focal atrophy, cerebral infarction, acute leukoencephalopathy and intracranial hemorrhage. The treatment is based on the use of symptomatic therapies, immunosuppressives and non-pharmacologic interventions. This review paper was designed to understand the pathophysiology for better management of NPSLE.

Staphylococcal pleuropulmonary disease (SPP) is the localization of pathogenic staphylococcal disease in the lung and pleura and its general haematogenic consequences. This location is not primary, but follows a primary skin or mucous infection that may go unnoticed. This is a very rare phenomenon in neonatology and in the various literature reviews. Through our observation we report the clinical diagnosis of a newborn 13-day age with pleuro-pulmonary staphyloccocia point of departure cutaneous, thus the paraclinical explorations performed in our patient therapeutic management and evolutionary profile after a 3-month decline. Note that the problem of resistance of staphylococci to different antibiotics is currently a real public health problem making the choice of treatment very difficult for the clinician.
