Dissemination of carbapenem-non-susceptible Acinetobacter baumannii isolates collected from educational hospitals in Qazvin province of Iran

Background:Acinetobacter baumannii(A.baumannii)is known as an opportunistic pathogen related to health-care-associated infection that has a high antibiotic resistance potential,notably against carbapenems that are widely used to combat A.baumannii infections.This study aimed to detect oxacillin-hydrolyzing(OXA)carbapenemases and metallo-β-lactamases(MBL)among carbapenem-resistant A.baumannii isolated strains and to determine their clonal relationship by repetitive extragenic palindromic PCR(rep-PCR).Methods:In the present study,a total of 211 non-repetitive isolates of A.baumannii were collected from Qazvin educational hospitals(2016–2017).The disk diffusion method was used to investigate the antibiotic susceptibility of studied strains,followed by the detection of MBL and OXA-type genes using polymerase chain reaction(PCR)and sequencing methods.The rep-PCR method assessed the clonal relationship of carbapenem-non-susceptible A.baumannii isolates.Result:The obtained results showed that 87.2%and 86.7%of isolates were non-susceptible to imipenem and meropenem.The blaOXA-24(93.5%)was the most frequent gene,followed by the blaOXA-23(4.34%),blaIMP-1(1.63%),and blaVIM-1(0.54%).Meanwhile,blaOXA-58 and blaOXA-143 genes were not found.81.5%and 66.1%of isolates contained ISAba1 upstream of the blaOXA-23 and blaOXA-58 genes,respectively.Rep-PCR results revealed the carbapenem non-susceptible isolates belonged to three distinct clones:A 171(81%),B 34(16.1%),and C 6(2.8%).Conclusions:The results indicated a high prevalence of carbapenem-non-susceptible A.baumannii,with the emergence of the blaOXA-24 gene as the most common gene and the notable prevalence of MBL genes.These results revealed the need for appropriate therapeutic and infection control strategies and monitoring susceptibility patterns for controlling A.baumannii infections.

Natural gas viscosity is an important parameter in many gas and petroleum engineering calculations.This study presents a new empirical model for quickly calculating the natural gas viscosity.The model was derived from 4089 experimental viscosity data with varieties ranging from 0.01 to 21,and 1 to 3 of pseudo reduced pressure and temperature,respectively.The accuracy of this new empirical correlation has been compared with commonly used empirical models,including Lee et al.,Heidaryan et al.,Carr et al.,and Adel Elsharkawy correlations.The comparison indicates that this new empirical model can predict viscosity of natural gas with average absolute relative deviation percentage AARD （%） of 2.173.

OBJECTIVE:Unsafe behaviors are an important cause of accidents in adolescent age groups. This study was designed to examine the behaviors of adolescent pedestrians in southern Iran.;METHODS:This is a descriptive analytical cross-sectional study. The study population consisted of high school students in Shiraz, capital city of Fars Province, Iran. Five hundred and sixteen students were selected by multi-stage sampling. Data were collected by the use of three questionnaires, which included Persian copies of adolescent road user behavior questionnaire (ARBQ), Duke University Religious Index (DUREL), as well as the context and independent variables questionnaire.;RESULTS:The results showed that a decrease in dangerous behaviors on the road resulted in an increase in respondents' intrinsic religiosity. Also, engagement in unsafe crossing behavior in the road decreased with increasing respondents' intrinsic religiosity. Another finding showed that female students were less involved in dangerous play and planned protective behaviors on the road.;CONCLUSIONS:Findings clearly indicate that intrinsic religiosity has a significant role in reducing the risky road behaviors of students. Hence, religion may improve road safety in school students' road behavior in Iran.

Gd3+-,Pr3+-or Sm3+-doped Co-Zn(Co0.5Zn0.5Fe2 O4)magnetic ferrites(i.e.,Co0.5Zn0.5Gd0.1Fe1.9O4,Co0.5Zn0.5Pr0.1Fe1.9O4 and Co0.5Zn0.5Sm0.1Fe1.9O4)were prepared using a facile sol-gel approach,and the structure,surface morphology and chemical composition of the products were studied by means of scanning electron microscopy(SEM),energy dispersive X-ray analysis(EDX),X-ray diffraction(XRD),UVvisible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy(DRS),photoluminescence(PL)spectroscopy,Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR)and vibrating sample magnetometer(VSM)spectroscopy.XRD patterns show the Co-Zn product is composed of cubic spinel phases with few impurities or secondary phases,and the average crystallite sizes of the samples are determined to be approximately^51—80,~99—181,~68—103 and^83—133 nm.Also the coercivity and remnant and saturation magnetizations,evaluated by vibrating sample magnetometer(VSM),are found to increase linearly with the incorporation of Gd3+,Pr3+and Sm3+in the product formulation.The CO1-xZnxFe2-yRyO4 photocatalyst sample is found to display a red shift in its absorption,and exhibits outstanding photocatalytic effects in the degradation of MO under ultraviolet(UV)light.This is attributed to the reduction of the band gap of cobalt-zinc ferrite due to the presence of rare earth ions.Further in vitro evaluations of the cytotoxic effects of the synthesized nanoparticles were performed on a HeLa cell line.

Invasive Fungal Sinusitis in Immunocompromised Patients: A Multicenter, University Hospital Experience in Shiraz

Objective: It is to determine the causes of invasive fungal sinusitis in patients of Shiraz University hospitals, Iran. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted during 18 months (from 21 March 2009 till 22 September 2010) in three Shiraz University Hospitals. Thirty-six patients with sings of invasive fungal sinusitis were enrolled, and tissue samples were investigated for histopathology, culture and antifungal susceptibility test. The laboratory results with host factor and sinus computed tomography scan were evaluated for classification of patients as proven, probable and possible invasive fungal sinusitis. Results: Thirty-five patients have involved with at least one risk factor (immune compromised disease, diabetes mellitus, or use of immune suppressed drugs). Radiological findings of parasinus invasion or necrosis were present in 20 patients. By histopathology, 21 patients were considered as proven, from these, 17 samples had positive growth. The culture aetiology agents were 4 Candida, 8 Aspergillus, and 5 Mucor. All positive culture samples were matched with histopathology findings. Significant associations were considered for radiologic finding and histopathology and culture (p 0.05). From 8 patients with mucormycosis histopathology, 6 suffered from diabetes mellitus. None of the antifungal agents were effective on these three types of infections. Conclusion: DM is the most common predisposing factor for IFS followed by ALL and AML. The most common aetiology of IFS was found to be Aspergillus fumigant followed by Mucormycosis and Candida. None of antifungal agents could successfully cover all the species.

AIM: To investigate the co-incidence of apoptosis, autophagy, and unfolded protein response(UPR) in hepatitis B(HBV) and C(HCV) infected hepatocytes.METHODS: We performed immunofluorescence confocal microscopy on 10 liver biopsies from HBV and HCV patients and tissue microarrays of HBV positive liver samples. We used specific antibodies for LC3β, cleaved caspase-3, BIP(GRP78), and XBP1 to detect autophagy, apoptosis and UPR, respectively. AntiHCV NS3 and anti-HBs antibodies were also used to confirm infection. We performed triple blind counting of events to determine the co-incidence of autophagy(LC3β punctuate), apoptosis(cleaved caspase-3), and unfolded protein response(GRP78) with HBV and HCV infection in hepatocytes. All statistical analyses were performed using SPSS software for Windows(Version 16 SPSS Inc, Chicago, IL, United States). P-values 0.05).
