The present study investigated the potential probiotic effect of Enterococcus faecalis against a pathogenic microorganism,Vibrio harveyi occurring in the giant freshwater prawn(Macrobrachium rosenbergii).*** was isolated from the intestine of *** through biochemical tests and PCR-based molecular *** in-vitro challenge was conducted by mixing isolated probiotic(5.12 log CFU/g)and ***(3.09 log CFU/g).Feeds incorporated with ***(9.02 log CFU/g)were applied to the treatment group during in vivo test in the aquarium and earthen pond(70 m^(2),1 m depth).Pathogenic bacteria were found to be reduced after 8 h(from 5.02 to 3.62 log CFU/g)and 60 days(from 5.44 to 2.15 log CFU/g)of probiotic administration in the in vitro and in vivo test,*** *** mixed feed also showed higher weight gain(WG%,481.22%±17.71%;SGR%,2.93%±0.18%)and digestive enzymes activities(amylase,1.26±0.08 unit/mg;protease,2.78±0.02 unit/mg)compared to control group(WG%,371.31%±13.35%;SGR%,2.30%±0.32%;amylase,0.7±0.03 unit/mg;protease,1.82±0.02 unit/mg).Furthermore,the probiotic also improved the immune response by augmenting NGH(from 73.33%±0.23%to 74.63%±0.11%)and SGH(from 22.24%±0.06%to 23.13%±0.08%)in the treatment ***,*** could be recommended to use against bacterial infections of the ***.

Simulation of Air Flow along Human Lung for Cylindrical Channel of Porous Medium

The steady flow behavior in terminal bronchus of human lung for cylindrical channel of porous medium has been studied. The governing equations have been solved analytically and numerically for cylindrical channel. Finite difference method is incorporated to simulate the problem. The numerical results are compared with square duct channel for different parametric effect. It is observed that the flow rate is increased in cylindrical channel compared to square duct channel for the increasing value of pressure gradient, porosity and permeability. On the contrary, the flow rate is decreased in square duct channel compared to cylindrical channel for increasing value of viscosity. Flow rate in both channels is analyzed and compared for non-porous medium also. It is observed that flow rate is increased very high in cylindrical channel compared to square duct channel for both medium.

Beyond Stitches: Analysis of Disease Burden in a Bangladeshi RMG Factory

Introduction: Bangladesh has experienced remarkable growth in RMG over the past 25 years. With the knitwear industry providing more than 4 million direct jobs, providing better occupational health and safety of workers remains a challenge. Aim of the study: The aim of the study was to analyze the disease burden of a RMG factory, and to highlight occupational health risks. Methods: A cross-sectional study design was employed for this analysis. A 17-month data entry (January 2020 - May 2021) was gathered from the factory in-house clinic. The socio-demographic and clinical diagnosis entries of 8421 entries were analyzed. Result: The population of the factory workers is 5370, where 40% (2148) are female workers and 60% (3222) are male workers. The mean age of respondents is 30 years, with a SD of ±7 years. Among the chief complaints, the most common was vomiting (14%;2262) fever (14%;2247), runny nose (11%;1842), cough (9%;1465), and loose motion (8%;1364). In the diagnosis categories, gastrointestinal diseases were more predominantly diagnosed (35%;2978), followed by viral fever (21%;1772), neurological diseases (16.5%;1389) and musculoskeletal disorders (9%;768). The average cost of medicine for each respondent is BDT 36. The factory covered costs of all medication for 99% (8380) of respondents. Only 0.5% (37) was referred to a tertiary hospital for further evaluation. Conclusion: Garments workers suffer mostly from long-term occupational health hazards. Factory owners and policy makers can contribute in various ways to improving primary healthcare options for workers.

Assessment of BRRI Whole Feed Combine Harvester (Model BRRI WCH2021) for Mechanized Rice Harvesting in Bangladesh

Agricultural mechanization plays a pivotal role in the transition from subsistence to commercial agriculture, with a particular focus on labour-intensive activities like harvesting. This study assesses the operational characteristics of the BRRI Whole Feed Combine Harvester (Model BRRI WCH2021) at the field level. Developed under the SFMRA project, the harvester’s technical performance and loss assessment were conducted during the Boro 2022 and Aman 2022 seasons in farmer fields in Bangladesh’s Rangpur region. The field efficiency of the harvester was determined to be 62.5% and 57.9% in the Boro and Aman seasons, respectively. Fuel consumption rates were recorded at 2.77 l/ha and 2.31 l/ha for the Boro and Aman seasons. The total harvesting losses, encompassing cutter bar, shatter, cylinder, and separation loss, averaged 0.56% and 0.48% in the Boro and Aman seasons, respectively. Mechanized harvesting with the BRRI Whole Feed Combine Harvester significantly reduced paddy losses by 5.81% compared to manual methods. The field evaluation results indicate the combine harvester’s satisfactory performance, highlighting its potential to alleviate labour demands during peak harvesting. The development of the BRRI WCH offers a sustainable solution for rice harvesting mechanization among progressive farmers. It paves the way for the broader adoption of advanced agricultural technology in Bangladesh.

First Report on Rhizome Rot Disease of Curcuma longa Caused by Fusarium solani in Bangladesh

Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) is a valuable medicinal plant as well as spice crop in Bangladesh. The rhizome rot disease is a severe danger to turmeric cultivation. The current study sought to identify the fungal pathogen linked to turmeric rhizome rot disease. Rhizome of turmeric with distinct rotted symptoms was collected from the experimental site of the Botanical Garden, Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh. The sample was screened to isolate the causative fungal pathogen through the tissue planting technique. Macro and micro-morphological characterization based on colony appearance, mycelial and conidial characteristics primarily identified the fungus as Fusarium sp. The ITS sequence of rDNA of the fungus exhibited 99 to 100 percent similarity with the other F. solani species formerly deposited in the NCBI database which confirmed the fungal identity as F. solani. An in vitro pathogenicity test validated the pathogenic nature of the fungus. Growth behaviors of the fungus were evaluated on different solid culture media viz., Potato dextrose agar, Potato sucrose agar, Sabouraud dextrose agar and Hansen’s agar;temperature conditions (10?C, 15?C, 20?C, 25?C, 30?C and 35?C) and pH levels (pH 4, pH 5, pH 6, pH 7 and pH 8). Maximum mycelial growth was obtained on PSA medium at 30?C temperature and pH 7 conditions. Current findings also conclude that F. solani favors a wide range of temperature and pH levels. To the best of our search, the present investigation revealed the relationship of F. solani with the rhizome rot disease of turmeric for the first time in Bangladesh.

Genetic Diversity with Cluster Analysis of Maize Genotypes (Zea mays L.)

The research investigation was carried out in the experimental area of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural university, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka-1207, during the late Rabi season Mid December to May 2018 to study the genetic diversity with cluster analysis for the 35 maize genotypes as experimental materials that were laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The research work was oriented to calculate and estimate the yield factor through analyzing genetic diversity involving the yield contributing characters. The maximum yield per plant (117.51 g) was estimated in the genotype G12 (Pacific) and the minimum yield per plant (51.89 g) was recorded in the genotype G17 (Dekalb Super). Due to the crossing among the 35 maize genotypes, a wide range of divergence was observed in this experiment. The highest genotypes were included in cluster number V with 12 genotypes: BHM-5, PAC-60, Pacific-98, HP-222, Khai Bhutta, AS-999, Pioneer, Duranta, Kaveri 218, Chamak-07 and Golden-984. Here, the intra cluster distance was observed in cluster I (1.23), II (0.00), III (0.76), IV (2.08) and V (1.89) respectively. The highest intra cluster was recorded in cluster IV (2.08) and the lowest in cluster III (0.76) that showed that the genotypes within the intra cluster distances were closely related and inter cluster distances were recorded higher and larger than intra cluster distances. Between inter and intra cluster mean values, inter cluster distances were recorded higher than the intra cluster distances which indicated wider genetic diversity among the genotypes of different groups involved. The maximum value for the cluster distance D2 was recorded in cluster III (18.740) followed by cluster II (15.470, 13.032). The farthest cluster distance was recorded in cluster III that means it represented the highest diversified genotypes than other clusters. A Numerical Simulation of Air Flow in the Human Respiratory System Based on Lung Model

The lung is an important organ that takes part in the gas exchange process. In the study of gas transport and exchange in the human respiratory system, the complicated process of advection and diffusion (AD) in airways of human lungs is considered. The basis of a lumped parameter model or a transport equation is modeled during the inspiration process, when oxygen enters into the human lung channel. The quantitative measurements of oxygen are detached and the model equation is solved numerically by explicit finite difference schemes. Numerical simulations were made for natural breathing conditions or normal breathing conditions. The respiratory flow results for the resting conditions are found strongly dependent on the AD effect with some contribution of the unsteadiness effect. The contour of the flow rate region is labeled and AD effects are compared with the variation of small intervals of time for a constant velocity when breathing is interrupted for a negligible moment.

Development and Fabrication of Manually Push-Pull Type Conical Weeder for Bangladesh Condition

In Bangladesh, the use of machinery in agriculture production is fast rising. Researchers are developing technology to replace traditional hand weeding to manage weeds in rice fields. The present study has been taken to increase weeding efficiency and reduce the drudgery in weeding and mulching. A line-to-line distance of 20 cm, the operation is push-pull, and field operating condition at 2 - 4 cm standing water (for softening the field) was the designed hypothesis. The weeder consists of a skid/float, float holder, float adjuster, main body frame, rotor, axel, bush, rotor holder, rotor holder adjuster, handle, handle griper, handle holder, handle height adjuster, nut, bolt, etc. The designed weeder was fabricated using MS sheet, MS pipe, MS flat bar, MS nut-bolt, etc. When the rotors perform back and forth, the weeder’s two conical rotors with six plain blades and six serrated blades work together to uproot and bury the weeds. It also contains a 2 mm thick float assembly with a precise angle of 22 degrees. Weeds are uprooted by the weeder’s blades and buried in the muddy soil. It causes topsoil disturbance and enhances aeration. The weeding efficiency and capacity of the conical weeder were 81.92% and 0.0203 ha/h respectively. With a push-pull operation, the weeder can uproot and bury the weeds in a single row at a time. The pushing force and weight of weeder were 43.42 N and 5.6 kg respectively. Farmers can use this weeder to increase their comfort and reduce the drudgery associated with weeding and mulching in their fields.

First Report of Pseudopestalotiopsis theae Causing Aloe vera Leaf Spot Disease in Bangladesh

Aloe vera (L.) Burm.f. is one of the important medicinal plants, has been commercially cultivated in the Northern part of Bangladesh. An experiment was conducted to detect A. vera leaf disease collected from Natore district, Bangladesh. Fungal leaf spot disease caused by Pseudopestalotiopsis theae (Sawada) Maharachch., K.D. Hyde & Crous was identified through morphological features and sequencing of internal transcribed spacer region of ribosomal DNA. After submitting nucleotide sequences to NCBI, we received an accession number MH333081.1: Pseudopestalotiopsis theae. The growth pattern of the isolated fungal pathogen was evaluated on different solid culture media, at different temperature and light conditions. The results showed the maximum mycelial growth of the fungus on the Richard Agar medium under the complete dark condition at 25°C. We evaluated fungal antagonists against the isolated pathogenic fungus, in which Trichoderma asperellum showed optimistic results. Synthetic fungicides—Tilt 250EC and Ridomil Gold completely inhibited the studied fungus’s vegetative growth. Pseudopestalotiopsis theae causing A. vera leaf spot disease in Bangladesh is a new record to the best of our knowledge.
