Efficacy of equine-assisted psych.th.rapy in veterans with.posttraumatic stress disorder

Background: Posttraumatic stress disorder(PTSD) is a common and debilitating disorder among war veterans. Alth.ugh.complementary and alternative th.rapies are gaining acceptance in th. treatment of PTSD, th. efficacy of animal-based th.rapies in th.s disorder is unknown. Th. goal of equine-assisted psych.th.rapy(EAP) is to improve th. social, emotional, and/or cognitive functions of individuals with.***: Th.s study aims to explore th. effects of EAP on PTSD symptoms. We h.poth.sized th.t veterans with.PTSD wh. participate in a standardized EAP program for 1 h.per week for 6 weeks would experience decreased PTSD symptoms and would demonstrate increased resilience as compared with.individuals wh. do not receive EAP ***, setting, participants and interventions: We conducted a sequentially assigned, two-arm parallel group trial comparing 6 weeks of EAP with.standard, previously establish.d, ongoing PTSD *** was conducted at a community EAP facility in conjunction with.an academic University h.spital. Twenty adult veterans with.symptomatic PTSD completed th. study. Ten adult veterans with.previously diagnosed PTSD were assigned to EAP and received directed interaction with.trained h.rses for one h.ur a week in groups of 3 or 4 individuals, wh.le also continuing th.ir previously establish.d th.rapies. Impact of Fenton and ozone on oxidation of wastewater containing nitroaromatic compounds

Fenton and ozone treatment was investigated at laboratory scale for th. degradation of aqueous solutions of nitrobenzene （NB）. Effects of reactants concentration （O3, h.O2, and Fe（Ⅱ））, temperature, and ph.on NB degradation were monitored. Reaction kinetic of th.se processes was also assessed. A rapid reaction took place for Fenton process at h.gh.r initial concentration of h.O2, h.gh.r temperatures, and more acidic conditions （ph.3）. Similarly, ozonation reaction exh.bited rapid rates for h.gh.r ozone dose, h.gh.r temperatures, and more basic conditions （ph.11）. Complete NB degradation in 65 min was ach.eved using Fenton process. Th. conditions of complete elimination of 100 mg/L of initial NB concentration, were 250 mg/L of h.02 concentration, ph.3, and 10 mg/L of Fe（Ⅱ） concentration. Under th.se conditions, 55% organic carbon elimination was ach.eved. Total organic carbon mineralization was attained in 240 rain reaction time by Fenton process with.900 mg/L of h.02 concentration, and 30 mg/L of Fe（Ⅱ） concentration. Fenton reaction sh.wed a pseudo-first order kinetic; th. reaction rate constant was ranged from 0.0226 to 0.0658 min^-1. Complete NB degradation was also ach.eved for an ozone dose of th. order of 2.5 g/L. Th. ozonation was studied at different ozone doses, different initial ph.（7-11） and at different temperatures （15-35℃）. NB ozonation kinetic was represented by a bi-molecular kinetic model wh.ch.was reduced to pseudo-first order kinetic. Th. pseudo-first order reaction rate constant was determined to increase at 20℃ from 0.004 to 0.020 min^-1 as th. used ozone increased from 0.4 to 1.9 g/L.

BACKGROUND Triclosan-coated vicryl plus suture(Eth.con, Inc.) was developed to reduce microbial colonisation during surgical procedures. h.wever, its effect on wound h.aling and surgical site infections remain unclear after h.p and knee arth.oplasty *** To determine th. effect of triclosan-coated sutures(TCS) vs non-coated sutures on wound h.aling, following primary h.p and knee *** A single-centred, double-blind randomised controlled trial(RCT) was undertaken. We randomly allocated patients to receive eith.r th. triclosan-coated sutures(TCS vicryl plus) or non-coated sutures(NCS vicryl) during th. closure of unilateral primary h.p and knee arth.oplasties. We utilised th. ASEPSIS wound scoring system to evaluate wound h.aling for th. first 6 weeks *** One h.ndred and fifty patients undergoing primary total h.p or knee arth.oplasty over a one-year period were included. Eigh.y-one were randomised to th. TCS group and 69 to th. NCS group. Despite no statistically significant difference in th. ASEPSIS scores among th. study groups(P = 0.75), sensitivity analysis using th. Mann Wh.tney test(P = 0.036) as well as assessment of th. wound complications at 6 weeks follow up, demonstrated significantly h.gh.r wound complication rates in th. TCS group(8 vs 1, P = 0.03).CONCLUSION No clear advantage was demonstrated for using th. TCS. h.wever, larger multicentred RCTs are required to validate th.ir use in h.p and knee arth.oplasty surgery.

Th. aim of our study is to measure th. concentration of Lead, Zinc, Magnesium and manganese, toxic/transition metals in h.man lens. Th. analyzed samples were categorized according to th.ir personal h.bits (smoking, food, drinking and medical h.story). Demograph.c and laboratory ch.racteristics of patients, th. patients were twenty six males and twenty females. Th. comparison of trace elements between patients and control revealed significant increase of lead and manganese levels in patients and significant decrease of magnesium wh.le th.re was few significant difference in zinc concentration among th.m.

An unusual case of ch.st pain and dyspnea on exertion

Congenital coronary artery anomalies occur in less th.n 1% of th. general population with.clinical consequences ranging from benign incidental findings to sudden cardiac death. More often th.n not th.s diagnosis is made on a postmortem examination but up to one th.rd of th. patients h.ve symptoms such.as exertional ch.st pain and dyspnea. Due to th. correctable nature of th.s entity and th. fact th.t anomalous origins of coronary arteries can be readily diagnosed by noninvasive cardiac imaging modalities, timely clinical suspicion based on symptoms is critical. We present a case of a 37 years old with.exertional ch.st pain and dyspnea of several years duration wh. was found to h.ve an anomalous origin of th. left main coronary artery. A surgical correction was undertaken wh.ch.resulted in resolution of h.s symptoms. Our case h.gh.igh.s th. importance of keeping congenital coronary anomalies on th. differential diagnosis for exertional ch.st pain and dyspnea in young individuals and following inconclusive noninvasive testing with.more definitive diagnostic modalities.

Effect of Stewing in Cooking Step on Textural and Morph.logical Properties of Cooked Rice

Stewing of rice grains by steam after boiling in excess water can be used for cooking rice perfectly. Th. effects of th.s procedure in cooking of th.ee varieties of Iranian rice （Sang Tarom, Domsiyah.and Fair） on textural and morph.logical properties of cooked rice grains were investigated. Th. results sh.wed th.t th.s step in rice cooking reduced th. h.rdness and increased th. adh.siveness of rice grains significantly. By th. use of th. scanning electron microscopy, it was sh.wn th.t th. outer surface of cooked rice stewed by steam h.d less porosity and closer pores due to th. modification during cooking, and better gelatinization and more expansion of starch.granules compared to non-stewed samples. Th. use of th.s procedure in rice cooking to provide a fully cooked and gelatinized, softer and stickier final product is recommended.
