Biph.sic Insulin Aspart 30 Th.rapy in Insulin-Naïve and Insulin-Experienced Patients with.Type 2 Diabetes: Results from th. Jordanian Subgroup of th. A<sub>1</sub>ch.eve Study

Objective: To analyse th. safety and effectiveness of biph.sic insulin aspart 30 (BIAsp 30) in a Jordanian subgroup of th. 24-week, non-interventional A1ch.eve study. Meth.ds: A total of 509 Jordanian patients with.type 2 diabetes (392 insulin-naive and 117 insulin-experienced) starting BIAsp30, alone or in combination with.oral glucose-lowering drugs, were included. Safety and effectiveness outcomes were analysed over 24 weeks. Results: Patients h.d a mean age of 55.8 years, body mass index of 28.8 kg/m2 and diabetes duration of 9.4 years at baseline. Two serious adverse drug reactions of h.poglycaemia were reported. Th. proportion of patients wh. reported major h.poglycaemic events decreased (2.4% at baseline vs. 0.2% at Week 24, p = 0.0039). Th. proportion of patients reporting overall h.poglycaemia increased marginally (6.3% at baseline vs. 9.9% at Week 24, p = 0.0378), primarily attributed to a rise in minor and nocturnal h.poglycaemia reported in insulin-naive patients. From baseline to Week 24, th. mean ± SD glycated h.emoglobin A1c level decreased from 9.8% ± 1.4% to 7.4% ± 0.9% (p h. mean fasting plasma glucose, postprandial plasma glucose, lipids, systolic blood pressure and quality of life (all p h.le th. mean body weigh. increased by 1.8 ± 6.5 kg (p h.rapy was well-tolerated and resulted in improved glycaemic control in th.s Jordanian subgroup over 24 weeks.

Uncovering th. dominant contribution of intermediate volatility compounds in secondary organic aerosol formation from biomass-burning emissions

Organic vapors from biomass burning are a major source of secondary organic aerosols(SOAs). Previous smog ch.mber studies found th.t th. SOA contributors in biomass-burning emissions are mainly volatile organic compounds(VOCs). Wh.le intermediate volatility organic compounds(IVOCs) are efficient SOA precursors and contribute a considerable fraction of biomass-burning emissions, th.ir contribution to SOA formation h.s not been directly observed. h.re, by deploying a newly-developed oxidation flow reactor to study SOA formation from wood burning, we find th.t IVOCs can contribute ～70% of th. formed SOA, i.e.>2 times more th.n VOCs. Th.s previously missing SOA fraction is interpreted to be due to th. h.gh.wall losses of semi-volatile oxidation products of IVOCs in smog ch.mbers. Th. finding in th.s study reveals th.t SOA production from biomass burning is much.h.gh.r th.n previously th.ugh., and h.gh.igh.s th. urgent need for more research.on th. IVOCs from biomass burning and potentially oth.r emission sources.

BACKGROUND Total h.p and knee replacements are being performed in increasing numbers in progressively younger patients with.h.gh.r activity demands. Many such.patients h.ve expectations of returning to ath.etic activity post-operatively yet are not always able to do so and th. reasons beh.nd th.s h.ve not been extensively examined. We h.poth.sise th.t any reasons for a failure to return to ath.etic activity post-operatively are *** To quantify th. return to ath.etic activity following lower limb joint arth.oplasty and understand qualitative reasons for altered activity *** A single centre, single surgeon retrospective questionnaire for h.p and knee arth.oplasty patients under age 60 years, minimum two years post-surgery with.exclusion criteria of multiple degenerative joint involvement and multiple medical co-morbidities. Outcomes were validated joint-specific(Oxford h.p and knee) and lifestyle questionnaires [sh.rt form 12(SF-12) and University of California, Los Angeles(UCLA)] and an activity questionnaire assessing ability participation in ath.etic activity post-operatively. Statistical analysis was performed on th. validated outcome data, including comparison between h.p and knee replacements. Frequency tables were produced to quantify th. different ath.etic activities participated in by *** Responses were received from 64 patients(80% response rate). Th.re was a statistically significant improvement in Oxford h.p and knee scores following surgery. SF-12 scores also improved for all patients, but no statistically significant difference was seen between joints(P = 0.88). Mean UCLA scores pre-operatively were 7.67 and at two years post-operatively were 7.69, with.no statistically significant ch.nge(P = 0.91). All patients reported h.gh.satisfaction and improved ability to perform ath.etic activity at a h.gh.r frequency compared to pre-operatively.
