Pathological progression of osteoarthritis:a perspective on subchondral bone

Osteoarthritis(OA)is a degenerative bone disease associated with aging.The rising global aging population has led to a surge in OA cases,thereby imposing a significant socioeconomic burden.Researchers have been keenly investigating the mechanisms underlying OA.Previous studies have suggested that the disease starts with synovial inflammation and hyperplasia,advancing toward cartilage degradation.Ultimately,subchondral-bone collapse,sclerosis,and osteophyte formation occur.This progression is deemed as“top to bottom.”However,recent research is challenging this perspective by indicating that initial changes occur in subchondral bone,precipitating cartilage breakdown.In this review,we elucidate the epidemiology of OA and present an in-depth overview of the subchondral bone’s physiological state,functions,and the varied pathological shifts during OA progression.We also introduce the role of multifunctional signal pathways(including osteoprotegerin(OPG)/receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa B ligand(RANKL)/receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa B(RANK),and chemokine(CXC motif)ligand 12(CXCL12)/CXC motif chemokine receptor 4(CXCR4))in the pathology of subchondral bone and their role in the“bottom-up”progression of OA.Using vivid pattern maps and clinical images,this review highlights the crucial role of subchondral bone in driving OA progression,illuminating its interplay with the condition.

The insufficient active sites and slow interfacial charge trans-fer of photocatalysts restrict the efficiency of CO_(2) photoreduction.The synchronized modulation of the above key issues is demanding and chal-lenging.Herein,strain-induced strategy is developed to construct the Bi–O-bonded interface in Cu porphyrin-based monoatomic layer(PML-Cu)and Bi_(12)O_(17)Br_(2)(BOB),which triggers the surface interface dual polarization of PML-Cu/BOB(PBOB).In this multi-step polarization,the built-in electric field formed between the interfaces induces the electron transfer from con-duction band(CB)of BOB to CB of PML-Cu and suppresses its reverse migration.Moreover,the surface polarization of PML-Cu further promotes the electron converge in Cu atoms.The introduction of PML-Cu endows a high density of dispersed Cu active sites on the surface of PBOB,significantly promoting the adsorption and activation of CO_(2) and CO desorption.The conversion rate of CO_(2) photoreduction to CO for PBOB can reach 584.3μmol g-1,which is 7.83 times higher than BOB and 20.01 times than PML-Cu.This work offers valuable insights into multi-step polarization regulation and active site design for catalysts.

Optical Fibre Communication Feature Analysis and Small Sample Fault Diagnosis Based on VMD-FE and Fuzzy Clustering

To solve the problems of a few optical fibre line fault samples and the inefficiency of manual communication optical fibre fault diagnosis,this paper proposes a communication optical fibre fault diagnosis model based on variational modal decomposition(VMD),fuzzy entropy(FE)and fuzzy clustering(FC).Firstly,based on the OTDR curve data collected in the field,VMD is used to extract the different modal components(IMF)of the original signal and calculate the fuzzy entropy(FE)values of different components to characterize the subtle differences between them.The fuzzy entropy of each curve is used as the feature vector,which in turn constructs the communication optical fibre feature vector matrix,and the fuzzy clustering algorithm is used to achieve fault diagnosis of faulty optical fibre.The VMD-FE combination can extract subtle differences in features,and the fuzzy clustering algorithm does not require sample training.The experimental results show that the model in this paper has high accuracy and is relevant to the maintenance of communication optical fibre when compared with existing feature extraction models and traditional machine learning models.

Polyoxometalate-organic cage with{Ni_(4)SiW_(9)}node for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

The design and syntheses of metal-organic cages(MOCs)based on polyoxometalates(POMs)building blocks have attracted increasing attention due to their intriguing molecular architectures and physicochemical properties.In this work,we have successfully synthesized and systematically characterized a tetrahedral polyoxometalate-based organic cage(POC),K_(3)Na_(17)H_(12)[(C_(4)H_(6)O_(6))_(6)[Ni_(4)(OH)_(3)(A-α-SiW_(9)O_(34))]_(4)]·96H_(2)O(Ni_(16)L_(6)(SiW_(9))_(4)),using tritopic Ni_(4)-substituted Keggin cluster(Ni_(4)SiW_(9))as nodes and flexible L-(+)-tartaric acid ligands as linkers.The resulting POC tetrahedron has been firstly investigated as efficient catalyst for visible-light-driven hydrogen production,achieving a turnover number of 15,500 after 96-h photocatalysis.Such high catalytic performance of Ni_(16)L_(6)(SiW_(9))_(4)POC catalyst could be attributed to its unique cage structure,thereby offering more efficient catalytic component accessibility.In addition,spectroscopic analyses illustrated the photocatalytic mechanism and the structural stability of the TBA-Ni_(16)L_(6)(SiW_(9))_(4)catalyst during the photocatalytic process.

Seeking continuous development,a modern community must also be able to adapt to future possible challenges using constrained or limited resources.As a revolutionary communication paradigm,the Internet of Things(IoT)empowers the cutting-edge and emerging applications which enable manifold new intelligent services towards a smart community.The sophisticated ecosystem of a digital community is made feasible by the IoT infrastructure,which also provides community control with access to a wealth of actual data.In addition,IoT platforms empower the ubiquitous computing ability,providing more potentials to the actuators in perception layer in the IoT architecture.With more and more population in the urban areas,sustainability issues have become a key factor to consider in the development of a digital community.We give a modern survey in this study on the most recent developments in IoT for sustainable digital communities.After carefully examining the most recent literature,we specifically highlight the various smart digital community application scenarios,such as smart buildings,energy management,green transportation,trash management,etc.We also look into a number of major issues facing the use of IoT technology in digital communities.Furthermore,we discuss potential future applications and future research areas for IoT,the critical component of sustainable digital communities.

Summary What is already known about this topic?Previous research indicates that non-occupational physical activity can reduce mortality risk.Nevertheless,the relationship between occupational physical activity and health improvements has not been consistently established.What is added by this report?The study found that regular exercise and leisure activities reduced the risk of all-cause mortality.However,the combination of exercise and leisure activities demonstrated more substantial benefits.Additionally,no meaningful association was identified between physical work and mortality risk within the older population.

Assessing the Accuracy of Diagnostic Tests

Gold standard tests are usually used for diagnosis of a disease, but the gold standard tests may not be always available or cannot be administrated due to many reasons such as cost, availability, ethical issues etc. In such cases, some instruments or screening tools can be used to diagnose the disease. However, before the screening tools can be applied, it is crucial to evaluate the accuracy of these screening tools compared to the gold standard tests. In this assay, we will discuss how to assess the accuracy of a diagnostic test through an example using R program.

针对谐振接地系统对地参数测量不准确以及高阻接地故障选线困难的问题,提出了并阻尼谐振接地系统对地参数测量与高阻故障选线新方法。基于消弧线圈并联阻尼电阻的投切特性,利用投切阻尼电阻前后零序电压幅值与相位的变化关系,测量系统对地电导与电容参数。在系统正常运行时,通过调整并联阻尼电阻值大小,测量各馈线零序导纳值。在发生接地故障后退出阻尼电阻,测量故障后各馈线零序导纳值,可消除系统参数不对称、互感器采样不同步的影响,主动构造故障前后各馈线的零序导纳相角差,实现故障线路的准确判别。在PSCAD仿真环境下对所提方法进行验证,结果表明:所提方法能够精确测量对地电导与电容参数,测量相对误差不高于0.6%;在不同馈线、不同过渡电阻下发生接地故障时,能准确判别故障线路,耐过渡电阻能力达10 kΩ。

What is already known about this topic?Environmental and occupational lead exposure has generally declined in the past two decades.However,there is no large-scale monitoring of blood lead levels(BLLs)in the Chinese general population.What is added by this report?This nationally representative study showed declines of BLLs in all ages of participants;for children aged 3–5 years,down from 78.1μg/L to 16.9μg/L,corresponding to 78.4%decrease in the past two decades(2000–2018).What are the implications for public health practice?Recommendations for elevated BLLs on screening children at high risk now need to be revisited and updated from 100μg/L to 50μg/L in guidelines to conform with the substantial declines in China.

Searching for high-frequency gravitational waves with a ground high alternating magnetic field
