Reproduction is of great importance for the continuation of the species.In insects,the fat body is the major tissue for nutrient storage and involved in vitellogenesis,which is essential for female reproduction.Here,2 proteins,hexamerin and allergen,were separated from the fat bodies of adult female American cockroaches(Periplaneta americana)and identified as storage proteins,encoding for 733 amino acids with molecular weight of 87.88 kDa and 686 amino acids with molecular weight of 82.18 kDa,respectively.The encoding genes of these 2 storage proteins are mainly expressed in the fat body.RNA interference-mediated knockdown of Hexamerin and Allergen in the early stage of the first reproductive cycle in females suppressed vitellogenesis and ovarian maturation,indicating that these storage proteins are involved in controlling reproduction.Importantly,the expression of Hexamerin and Allergen was repressed by knockdown of the juvenile hormone(JH)receptor gene Met and the primary response gene Kr-h1,and was induced by methoprene,a JH analog,in both in vivo and in vitro experiments.Altogether,we have determined that hexamerin and allergen are identified as storage proteins and play an important role in promoting female reproduction in the American cockroach.The expression of their encoding genes is induced by JH signaling.Our data reveal a novel mechanism by which hexamerin and allergen are necessary for JH-stimulated female reproduction.

A novel silver-doped nickel oxide hole-selective contact for crystalline silicon heterojunction solar cells

Based on its band alignment,p-type nickel oxide(NiO_(x))is an excellent candidate material for hole transport layers in crystalline silicon heterojunction solar cells,as it has a smallΔEV and largeΔEC with crystalline silicon.Herein,to overcome the poor hole selectivity of stoichiometric NiO_(x) due to its low carrier concentration and conductivity,silver-doped nickel oxide(NiO_(x):Ag)hole transport layers with high carrier concentrations were prepared by co-sputtering high-purity silver sheets and pure NiO_(x) targets.The improved electrical conductivity of NiO_(x) was attributed to the holes generated by the Ag^(+)substituents for Ni^(2+),and moreover,the introduction of Ag^(+)also increased the amount of Ni^(3+)present,both of which increased the carrier concentration in NiO_(x).Ag^(+)doping also reduced the c-Si/NiO_(x) contact resistivity and improved the hole-selective contact with NiO_(x).Furthermore,the problems of particle clusters and interfacial defects on the surfaces of NiO_(x):Ag films were solved by UV-ozone oxidation and high-temperature annealing,which facilitated separation and transport of carriers at the c-Si/NiO_(x) interface.The constructed c-Si/NiO_(x):Ag solar cell exhibited an increase in open-circuit voltage from 490 to 596 mV and achieved a conversion efficiency of 14.4%.

Effect of carbonization atmosphere on electrochemical properties of nitrogen-doped porous carbon

Nitrogen atom doping has been found to enhance the electrochemical performance of porous carbon(PC).In this study,hollow tubular nitrogen-doped porous carbon(N/PC)was synthesized using polyvinylpyrrolidone as the carbon–nitrogen source and fibrous brucite as the template through carbonization.The effects of nitrogen and argon protective atmospheres on the nitrogen content,the specific surface area(SSA),and electrochemical properties of N/PC were investigated.The results showed that compared with N/FBC-Ar,N/FBC-N2 prepared in nitrogen protective atmosphere had a higher nitrogen content and a larger proportion of pyrrolic nitrogen(N-5)and pyridinic nitrogen(N-6).N/FBC-N2 displayed a specific capacitance(C)of 194.1 F·g^(−1)at 1 A·g^(−1),greater than that of N/FBC-Ar(174.3 F·g^(−1)).This work reveals that the nitrogen doping with a higher nitrogen content in nitrogen protective atmosphere is more favorable.Furthermore,a larger proportion of pyrrolic nitrogen and pyridinic nitrogen in the doped nitrogen atoms significantly enhances the electrochemical performance.

A visualized soundscape prediction model for design processes in urban parks

Existing soundscape prediction model application conditions and calculation processes are very complex,and difficult to combine with design processes.Therefore,in this study,a visual soundscape prediction model is constructed for sound pressure level(SPL)prediction,sound source prediction,and soundscape evaluation prediction by inputting the elements of urban design under the meshing method(grid 50 m)into a machine learning Gaussian mixture model(GMM).Taking three typical urban parks as examples,the soundwalk method is used to collect subjective perception information on-site to verify prediction accuracy.The results show that by applying geographic information data,including the minimum distance values from predicted points to roads,entrances and exits,and internal nodes,the SPL can be predicted.When the accuracy rate is stable within a 3 dBA error range,the prediction accuracy rate is 67.7%.The visual perception information added is used to quickly predict the sound source type,and the output is the visualized distribution of the natural,human,and mechanical sound perception with a 77.4%accuracy rate.Finally,combining geographic,visual and sound data to predict soundscape evaluation,the model's output are good,medium,and poor categories for each descriptor of the soundscape evaluation,and the prediction results are visualized in three colours with a 74.2%accuracy rate.The convenient soundscape prediction model proposed in this paper can be applied to design practice.By adjusting park design elements,the distribution results can be compared,and an optimal design scheme from the soundscape perspective can be obtained.Combined with the model output,this study compares the model simulation results after adjusting the design elements and the original,and proposes targeted optimisation strategies for urban park soundscape.

Toward practical gas sensing with rapid recovery semiconducting carbon nanotube film sensors

Nanomaterials have been considered as promising materials to construct highly sensitive and miniaturized gas sensors due to their high ratio of surface to volume, but almost all of the reported nanomaterials based resistive gas sensors are difficult to use in the practical system mainly owing to the long recovery time and non-equilibrium state at room temperature. Here, we demonstrate a gate assistant technology to realize the rapid recovery to an equilibrium state in semiconducting carbon nanotube(CNT) thin-film gas sensors and promote the CNT-based gas sensors to reach the practical application level. Specifically, we construct highly uniform gas sensors based on semiconducting solution-derived CNT film and accelerate the gas molecules desorption by applying a voltage on the back gate(substrate), which is named gate-assistant recovery technology. By combining the gate-assistant recovery technology and a modified concentration calculation method, highly reproducible detection systems have been realized by using a custom-built printed circuit board(PCB) based data acquisition circuits to execute a real-time rapid detection of H2 in the air at room temperature, and especially exhibits a record response time of 9 s and recovery time of 50 s under a resolution of 10 ppm, which outperformed previous low dimensional nanomaterials based portable H2 detection systems. The gate-assistant rapid recovery and related concentration calculation technologies are helpful to promote the nanomaterials-based gas sensors to practical application for highly sensitive online gas detection.

Genetic variation in ZmSO contributes to ABA response and drought tolerance in maize seedlings

Water scarcity impairs maize growth and yield.Identification and deployment of superior droughttolerance alleles is desirable for the genetic improvement of stress tolerance in maize.Our previous study revealed that maize sulfite oxidase(SO) catalyzes the oxidation of sulfite to sulfate and may be involved in drought response.But it was unclear whether the natural variation in Zm SO is directly associated with the drought resistance of maize.In the present study,we showed that Zm SO was associated with drought tolerance in maize seedlings,using gene association analysis and a transgene approach.A 14-bp insertion variation,containing two ABA-responsive elements,in the promoter region of Zm SO conferred ABAinducible expression,leading to increased drought tolerance.Genetic selection of this favorable allele increased drought tolerance.This study has identified elite alleles associated with sulfur metabolism for improving maize drought resistance.

Five-year warming does not change soil organic carbon stock but alters its chemical composition in an alpine peatland

Climate warming may promote soil organic carbon(SOC)decomposition and alter SOC stocks in terrestrial ecosystems,which would in turn affect climate warming.We manipulated a warming experiment using open-top chambers to investigate the effect of warming on SOC stock and chemical composition in an alpine peatland in Zoigêon the eastern Tibetan Plateau,China.Results showed that 5 years of warming soil temperatures enhanced ecosystem respiration during the growing season,promoted above-and belowground plant biomass,but did not alter the SOC stock.However,labile O-alkyl C and relatively recalcitrant aromatic C contents decreased,and alkyl C content increased.Warming also increased the amount of SOC stored in the silt-clay fraction(0.25 mm,respectively).These changes in labile and recalcitrant C were largely associated with warming-induced increases in soil microbial biomass C,fungal diversity,enzyme activity,and functional gene abundance related to the decomposition of labile and recalcitrant C compounds.The warming-induced accumulation of SOC stored in the silt-clay fraction could increase SOC persistence in alpine peatland ecosystems.Our findings suggest that mechanisms mediated by soil microbes account for the changes in SOC chemical composition and SOC in different aggregate size fractions,which is of great significance when evaluating SOC stability under climate warming conditions.

Knowledge bases(KBs)are far from complete,necessitating a demand for KB completion.Among various methods,embedding has received increasing attention in recent years.PTransE,an important approach using embedding method in KB completion,considers multiple-step relation paths based on TransE,but ignores the association between entity and their related entities with the same direct relationships.In this paper,we propose an approach called EP-TransE,which considers this kind of association.As a matter of fact,the dissimilarity of these related entities should be taken into consideration and it should not exceed a certain threshold.EPTransE adjusts the embedding vector of an entity by comparing it with its related entities which are connected by the same direct relationship.EPTransE further makes the euclidean distance between them less than a certain threshold.Therefore,the embedding vectors of entities are able to contain rich semantic information,which is valuable for KB completion.In experiments,we evaluated our approach on two tasks,including entity prediction and relation prediction.Experimental results show that our idea of considering the dissimilarity of related entities with the same direct relationships is effective.

多孔炭的表面性质、孔径分布及比表面积是影响其电化学性能的主要因素。为了对多孔炭孔结构及电化学性能等进行调控，采用聚乙烯吡咯烷酮为碳源、纤维水镁石为模板、磷酸三钾为活化剂，通过一步炭化–活化法制备了分级多孔炭（HPC），并研究了磷酸三钾添加量对多孔炭孔径分布、比表面积及电化学性能的影响。基于X射线衍射、氮气吸脱附、扫描电镜、X射线光电子能谱、X射线能谱仪、横流充放电、循环伏安及交流阻抗等测试，结果表明：磷酸三钾活化后样品HPC/K3在0.5 A/g电流密度下比电容可达281.94 F/g，远高于未活化HPC/K0的200.31 F/g；经过8 000次充放电循环后容量保持率可达84.7%。研究表明磷酸三钾活化可以显著改善多孔炭的电化学性能，此外，以纤维水镁石为模板合成多孔炭，还可以为天然矿物纤维水镁石的高附加值应用提供新思路。

在全球范围内,疟疾仍然是一个重大的公共卫生问题。疟疾具有明显的性别二态性,男性感染者的症状和死亡率往往比女性更严重。然而,在许多有关疟原虫感染的实验性研究中,性别因素却常常被忽略。雌激素作为一种主要的女性性激素,具有调节免疫反应和炎症信号的功能,在疟疾感染的性别差异中起到了重要作用。本综述拟尝试从雌激素的基本生理功能和免疫调控作用出发,回顾并总结以往报道的关于疟疾感染性别差异的流行病学证据,深入分析雌激素如何影响疟疾感染及其在疟疾感染中的可能作用。由于国内目前尚无关于疟疾性别差异性的综述性总结,希望本综述能引起研究者对疟疾性别二态性的重视。了解和重视疟疾的性别二态性,以及基于这种二态性背后的原因,可以帮助我们更加深入地理解疟疾的病理和其所引起的个体免疫反应,为相关基础研究提供新的思路,并为今后的疟疾防控工作提供帮助。
