In some Midwest regions of China, the traditional train positioning methods are limited by poor positioning signal reception and difficult maintenance of trackside equipment, due to the harsh geomorphic environment. Multi-sensor fusion positioning method is also difficult to ensure the high reliability and safety of train control system. Therefore, it is essentially important to improve the system reliability while ensuring the system positioning accuracy, from the aspect of train-independent positioning method. This paper analyses GNSS and ODO sensors failure characteristics, and studies the reliability and availability computing methods of different failure types. The 2 out of 2(2 oo2) and 2 out of 3(2 oo3) systems are designed using redundancy integrated. The experiments assess the failure rate of train positioning sensors through the collected data from the Qinghai-Tibet on-board positioning unit, then further analyzes the reliability and availability by reliability block diagram and Markov chain. The results show that comparing with 2 out of 2 positioning system, 2 out of 3 positioning system has better reliability in hard failure and better availability in soft failure. Based on the equipment failure rate surveyed in this paper, the reliability and availability of 2 oo3 is about 4% higher than that of 2 oo2.
