Electrical Stimulation Enabled via Electrospun Piezoelectric Polymeric Nanofibers for Tissue Regeneration

Electrical stimulation has demonstrated great effectiveness in the modulation of cell fate in vitro and regeneration therapy in vivo.Conventionally,the employment of electrical signal comes with the electrodes,battery,and connectors in an invasive fashion.This tedious procedure and possible infection hinder the translation of electrical stimulation technologies in regenerative therapy.Given electromechanical coupling and flexibility,piezoelectric polymers can overcome these limitations as they can serve as a self-powered stimulator via scavenging mechanical force from the organism and external stimuli wirelessly.Wireless electrical cue mediated by electrospun piezoelectric polymeric nanofibers constitutes a promising paradigm allowing the generation of localized electrical stimulation both in a noninvasive manner and at cell level.Recently,numerous studies based on electrospun piezoelectric nanofibers have been carried out in electrically regenerative therapy.In this review,brief introduction of piezoelectric polymer and electrospinning technology is elucidated first.Afterward,we highlight the activating strategies(e.g.,cell traction,physiological activity,and ultrasound)of piezoelectric stimulation and the interaction of piezoelectric cue with nonelectrically/electrically excitable cells in regeneration medicine.Then,quantitative comparison of the electrical stimulation effects using various activating strategies on specific cell behavior and various cell types is outlined.Followingly,this review explores the present challenges in electrospun nanofiber-based piezoelectric stimulation for regeneration therapy and summarizes the methodologies which may be contributed to future efforts in this field for the reality of this technology in the clinical scene.In the end,a summary of this review and future perspectives toward electrospun nanofiber-based piezoelectric stimulation in tissue regenerationare elucidated.

Guaranteeing Wireless Communication Reliability via an Extended Hybrid Carrier System

In this paper,we propose an extended hybrid carrier system based on the weighted fractional Fourier transform to ensure the reliability of wireless communication.The proposed scheme improves the dispersion and compensation capabilities of the hybrid carrier system for channel fading through the design of the signal power distribution,which has greatly reduced the probability of high-power distortion of the signal and improved the bit error rate performance as a result.Theoretical analysis has shown the superiority of the extended hybrid carrier system.With a lower cost of computational complexity increment,the proposed scheme obtains a performance improvement without occupying additional time-frequency physical resources.Compared with the existing hybrid carrier scheme,numerical simulation results have shown that the proposed extended hybrid carrier scheme has better anti-fading performance under the doubly-selective channel and improves the reliability of the wireless communication system effectively.

To the Editor: Research result of CULPRIT-SHOCK trial[1] presented at the Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) 2017 conference suggested that acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients with multivessel disease (MVD) and cardiogenic shock undergoing primary percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) treated with culprit-only revascularization (COR) strategy had lower mortality at one month compared with immediate complete revascularization in single procedure (CRS) strategy, which challenge current guidelines and years of consensus[2-5].

Chronic administration of triclosan leads to liver fibrosis through hepcidin-ferroportin axis-mediated iron overload

Triclosan(TCS)has been manufactured as an antibacterial compound for half a century.Currently,it is widely used in various personal care products;however,its potential adverse effects raise a lot of attention.Here,we create a long-term oral administration mouse model and identify the corresponding hepatotoxicity of TCS.We discover that daily intragastric administration of 10 mg/kg TCS to mice for 12 weeks results in severe hepatic fibrosis.Further study displays that hepatic iron increased 18%,23%and 29%upon oral TCS treatment for4,8 and 12 weeks,respectively.Accompanied by hepatic iron variation,splenic and duodenal iron are increased,which indicates systemic iron disorder.Not only excessive iron accumulated in the liver,abnormal hepatic malondialdehyde,prostaglandin synthase 2 and glutathione peroxidase 4 are pointed to ferroptosis.Additional study uncovers that hepcidin expression increases 7%,10%,4%in serum and 2.4-,4.8-,and 2.3-fold on transcriptional levels upon TCS exposure for 4,8 and 12 weeks,individually.Taken together,the mice in the TCS-treated group show disordered systemic iron homeostasis via the upregulated hepatic hepcidin-ferroportin axis.Meanwhile,both hepatic iron overload(systemic level)and hepatocyte ferroptosis(cellular level)are accused of TCS-induced liver fibrosis.Ferriprox■,an iron scavenger,significantly ameliorates TCS-induced liver fibrosis.In summary,this study confirms the impact of TCS on liver fibrosis;a critical signal pathway is also displayed.The significance of the current study is to prompt us to reevaluate the“pros and cons”of TCS applications.

Experimental clearance rate and intraguild predation of jellyfish Cyanea nozakii

Cyanea nozakii,a common jellyfish distributed in offshore China,has a complex trophic relationship with other zooplankton groups.However,few studies have reported the predation rates and prey selection patterns of C.nozakii medusae on different prey items.Research is also lacking on the intraguild predation of Aurelia coerulea(another common bloom jellyfish in offshore China)by C.nozakii.To address the knowledge gaps,the clearance rates of C.nozakii for different prey items,including copepods(small1000μm),fish larvae,and gelatinous prey(hydromedusae,A.coerulea ephyrae,and chaetognaths),were measured.The influence of predator size on the clearance rate was also determined.Additionally,we examined the intraguild predation of C.nozakii on A.coerulea medusae.The clearance rates of C.nozakii varied widely with prey organisms,being independent of prey concentrations.Gelatinous organisms,except for chaetognaths,were captured with considerably high efficiency,followed by fish larvae and copepods,indicating the preferential prey selection of gelatinous organisms by C.nozakii.The clearance rate increased linearly with the cross-sectional area of C.nozakii.Body size in medusae may,to some extents,underpin their capacity to capture more prey by increasing the encounter rate and capture success through ontogeny.C.nozakii preyed voraciously on A.coerulea in high feeding efficiency,but the clearance rate decreased with increasing A.coerulea(as prey)size.This phenomenon of intraguild predation suggests a speculative hypothesis of potential population regulation of A.coerulea by C.nozakii.The information regarding the feeding ecology of C.nozakii reported in this study is important for understanding plankton dynamics in marine ecosystems with extensive occurrences of this jellyfish.

Bottlenecks and Countermeasures of High-Penetration Renewable Energy Development in China

China has become the world’s largest producer and consumer of energy,and ranks first in its wind and solar power installation capacity.However,serious wind and solar curtailment in China has significantly hindered the development and utilization of renewable energy.To address problems in the consumption of renewable energy,this paper analyzes four key factors affecting the capacity of power generated from renewable energy sources:power balance,power regulation performance,transmission capacity,and load level.Focusing on these bottlenecks,we propose seven solutions:centralized and distributed development of renewable energy,improving the peak-load regulation flexibility of thermal power,increasing the proportion of gas turbines and pumped-hydropower storage,construction of transmission channels and a flexible smart grid developing demand response and virtual power plants,adopting new energy active support and energy storage,and establishing appropriate policies and market mechanisms.The Chinese Government and energy authorities have issued a series of policies and measures,and in the past three years,China has had remarkable achievements in the adoption of renewable energy.The rate of idle wind capacity decreased from 17%in 2016 to 7%in 2018,and that of solar decreased from 10%in 2016 to 3%in 2018.

Structural and magnetic properties of micropolycrystalline cobalt thin films fabricated by direct current magnetron sputtering

Pure cobalt(Co)thin films were fabricated by direct current magnetron sputtering,and the effects of sputtering power and pres-sure on the microstructure and electromagnetic properties of the films were investigated.As the sputtering power increases from 15 to 60 W,the Co thin films transition from an amorphous to a polycrystalline state,accompanied by an increase in the intercrystal pore width.Simultaneously,the resistivity decreases from 276 to 99μΩ·cm,coercivity increases from 162 to 293 Oe,and in-plane magnetic aniso-tropy disappears.As the sputtering pressure decreases from 1.6 to 0.2 Pa,grain size significantly increases,resistivity significantly de-creases,and the coercivity significantly increases(from 67 to 280 Oe),which can be attributed to the increase in defect width.Corres-pondingly,a quantitative model for the coercivity of Co thin films was formulated.The polycrystalline films sputtered under pressures of 0.2 and 0.4 Pa exhibit significant in-plane magnetic anisotropy,which is primarily attributable to increased microstress.

Enhanced nitrogen removal upon the addition of volatile fatty acids from activated sludge by combining calcium peroxide and low-thermal pretreatments

This study investigated a combined low-thermal and CaO_(2)pretreatment to enhance the volatile fatty acid(VFA)production from waste activated sludge(WAS).The fermentative product was added to a sequencing batch reactor(SBR)as an external carbon source to enhance nitrogen removal.The results showed that the combined pretreatment improved WAS solubilization,releasing more biodegradable substrates,such as proteins and polysaccharides,from TB-EPS to LB-EPS and S-EPS.The maximum VFA production of 3529±188 mg COD/L was obtained in the combined pretreatment(0.2 g CaO_(2)/g VS+70℃for 60 min),which was 2.1 and 1.4-fold of that obtained from the sole low-thermal pretreatment and the control test,respectively.Consequently,when the fermentative liquid was added as an external denitrification carbon source,the effluent total nitrogen decreased to Class A of the discharge standard for pollutants in rural wastewater treatment plants in most areas of China.

Effects of creep characteristics of natural gas hydrate-bearing sediments on wellbore stability

Natural gas hydrate(NGH)reservoirs consist of the types of sediments with weak cementation,low strength,high plasticity,and high creep.Based on the kinetics and thermodynamic characteristics of NGH decomposition,herein a heat-fluid-solid coupling model was established for studying the wellbore stability in an NGH-bearing formation to analyze the effects of the creep characteristics of NGH-bearing sediments during long-term drilling.The results demonstrated that the creep characteristics of sediments resulted in larger plastic yield range,thus aggravating the plastic strain accumulation around the wellbore.Furthermore,the creep characteristics of NGH-bearing sediments could enhance the effects induced by the difference in horizontal in situ stress,as a result,the plastic strain in the formation around the wellbore increased nonlinearly with increasing difference in in situ stress.The lower the pore pressure,the greater the stress concentration effects and the higher the plastic strain at the wellbore.Moreover,the lower the initial NGH saturation,the greater the initial plastic strain and yield range and the higher the equivalent creep stress.The plastic strain at the wellbore increased nonlinearly with decreasing initial saturation.
