Two-photon absorption (TPA) and frequency-upconversion properties of a new upconversion laser dye trans-4-[p-(N-hydroxyethyl-N-methyl-amino)styryl]-N-meth-ylpyridinium toluene-p-sulfonate (abbreviated to HMASPS) were reported in this note. The linear absorption, TPA, single-photon induced fluorescence, TPA induced fluorescence and TPA induced upconverted lasing spectra of HMASPS solution in dimethyl formamide (abbreviated to DMF) were measured at room temperature. The red shift for the central wavelength of TPA induced fluorescence peak, which was compared with that of the single-photon induced fluorescence peak, and the blue shift for that of TPA induced up-converted lasing compared with that of TPA induced fluorescence, were explained by using re-absorption effect. TPA peak was at 930 nm. There is an 11 nm blue shift for two-photon energy of TPA peak compared with the linear absorption peak. Background Currently,there are no reliable indicators for predicting intravenous immunoglobulin resistance and coronary artery lesions in the early stage of Kawasaki *** A total of 300 patients with Kawasaki disease were studied *** data were compared between the intravenous immunoglobulin resistant (29 patients) and responsive groups,and between the groups with coronary artery lesions (48 patients) and without coronary artery *** The intravenous immunoglobulin resistant group had significantly higher D-dimer,globulin,interleukin-6 and serum ferritin levels in comparison to the intravenous immunoglobulin responder group.D-dimer level had a sensitivity of 87.0% and a specificity of 56.3% for predicting intravenous immunoglobulin resistance at a cutoff point of 1.09 mg/*** had a sensitivity of 62.1% and a specificity of 82.3% for predicting intravenous immunoglobulin resistance at a cutoff point of 34.7 g/*** ferritin level had a sensitivity of 42.9% and a specificity of 88.8% for predicting intravenous immunoglobulin resistance at a cutoff point of 269.7 ng/*** patients with coronary artery lesions had higher D-dimer and tumor necrosis factor-α level.D-dimer level had a sensitivity of 50% and a specificity of 78.6% for predicting coronary artery lesions at a cutoff point of 1.84 mg/*** on analysis by multivariate logistic regression,serum ferritin and globulin were independent risks for intravenous immunoglobulin resistance,D-dimer was independent risk for coronary artery *** Elevated serum ferritin,globulin and D-dimer levels are significantly associated with intravenous immunoglobulin resistance in Kawasaki ***,serum D-dimer is significantly increased in Kawasaki disease with coronary artery lesions.

OBJECTIVE To investigate the association between current and former smoking and the risk of mortality in elderly Chinese *** Our study participants were elderly(≥60 years)men recruited in a suburban town of *** smoking status was categorized as never smoking,remote(cessation>5 years)and recent former smoking(cessation≤5 years),and light-to-moderate(≤20 cigarettes/day)and heavy current smoking(>20 cigarettes/day).Cox proportional hazards models and restricted cubic splines were used to examine the associations of *** The 1568 participants had a mean age of 68.6±7.1 *** all participants,311 were never smokers,201 were remote former smokers,133 were recent former smokers,783 were light-to-moderate current smokers and 140 were heavy current *** a median follow-up of 7.9 years,all-cause,cardiovascular and non-cardiovascular deaths occurred in 267,106 and 161 participants,*** current smokers had the highest risk of all-cause and non-cardiovascular mortality,with an adjusted hazard ratio(HR)of 2.30(95%CI:1.34-4.07)and 3.98(95%CI:2.03-7.83)versus never smokers,*** former smokers also had a higher risk of all-cause(HR=1.62,95%CI:1.04-2.52)and non-cardiovascular mortality(HR=2.40,95%CI:1.32-4.37)than never *** regression restricted cubic spline models showed the highest risk of all-cause and non-cardiovascular mortality within 5 years of smoking cessation and decline *** subgroup analyses showed interaction between smoking status and pulse rate(≥70 beats/min vs.<70 beats/min)in relation to the risk of all-cause and non-cardiovascular mortality,with a higher risk in current versus never smokers in those participants with a pulse rate below 70 beats/*** Cigarette smoking in elderly Chinese confers significant risks of mortality,especially when recent former smoking is considered together with current smoking.

Sex determination has been studied in the model lepidopteran species Bombyx mori, but it remains poorly understood in lepidopteran pests. In the present study, we identified and characterized the Masculinizer (Masc) gene in a Noctuidae pest species, Agrotis ipsilon. Sequence analysis revealed that AiMasc encodes a protein of 658 amino acids that has two CCCH-type zinc finger domains and two conserved cysteine residues (Cys-277 and Cys-280). We assessed the masculinizing activity AiMasc in BmN cells and found that/z'Masc induced expression of the male-specific doublesex isoform. Disruption of Masc via clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated protein 9 (Cas9) in A. ipsilon caused abnormalities in abdominal segments and external genitalia, resulting in male-specific sterility. These results suggest that Masc participates in the process of sex determination in A. ipsilon. Successful identification of sex-determination gene in a pest species may enable the development of novel genetic approaches for pest control.

Removal of Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Organic Pollutants From Water Using Seeding Type Immobilized Microorganisms

Objective To study the possibility of removing nitrogen, phosphorus, and organic pollutants using seeding type immobilized microorganisms. Methods Lakes P and M in Wuhan were chosen as the objects to study the removal of nitrogen, phosphorus, and organic pollutants with the seeding type immobilized microorganisms. Correlations between the quantity of heterotrophic bacteria and the total nitrogen （TN）, total phosphorus （TP）, and total organic carbon （TOC） in the two lakes were studied. The dominant bacteria were detected, inoculated to the sludge and acclimated by increasing nitrogen, phosphorus and decreasing carbon source in an intermittent, time-controlled and fixed-quantity way. The bacteria were then used to prepare the seeding type immobilized microorganisms, selecting diatomite as the adsorbent cartier. The ability and influence factors of removing nitrogen, phosphorus, and organic pollutant from water samples by the seeding type immobilized microorganisms were studied. Results The coefficients of the heterotrophic bacterial quantity correlated with TOC, TP, and TN were 0.9143, 0.8229, 0.7954 in Lake P and 0.9168, 0.7187, 0.6022 in Lake M. Ten strains of dominant heterotrophic bacteria belonging to Pseudomonas, Coccus, Aeromonas, Bacillus, and Enterobateriaceae, separately, were isolated. The appropriate conditions for the seeding type immobilized microorgansims in purifying the water sample were exposure time=24 h, pH=7.0-8.0, and quantity of the immobilized microorganisms=0.75-1g/50 mL. The removal rates of TOC, TP, and TN under the above conditions were 80.2%, 81.6%, and 86.8%, respectively. Conclusion The amount of heterotrophic bacteria in the two lakes was correlated with TOC, TP, and TN. These bacteria could be acclimatized and prepared for the immobilized microorganisms which could effectively remove nitrogen, phosphorus, and mixed organic pollutants in the water sample.
