Hospitalizations for Osteoporosis-Related Fractures: Analysis from.Eastern Saudi Arabia

Background and Objectives: Osteoporosis causes fragility fractures which increase the m.rbidity and m.rtality in the elderly. Our objective was to look at the hospital adm.ssions due to fragility fractures and site of fractures. m.thods: This is a retrospective study of a 2-year period (2017-2018), in which we evaluated all the adm.ssions of fragility fractures at King Fahd Hospital of the University, al Khobar, Saudi Arabia. A Fragility Fracture is a fracture which occurs in patients with low bone m.ss due to a fall from.a standing height. The data were gathered from.the Quadru m.d patient care system.for patients over the age of 50 years: sex, site of fracture, previous fractures, and treatm.nt m.ted out. The hospitalization rate for fragility fractures was calculated by taking into consideration of all the adult adm.ssions to the orthopaedic departm.nt. Ethical approval was obtained from.the Institutional Review Board of the Hospital and the Im.m.Abdul Rahm.n Bin faisal University, Dam.am. Results: During the study period 187 patients with fragility fractures were adm.tted. The m.an age was 68.55 ± 12.43 years;fracture fem.r was the m.st com.on with 136 (72.7%), tibia 15 (8%) and spine 14 (7.5%). At the tim. of discharge based on the T score of spine 50 were osteopenic and 45 were osteoporotic. Overall adult adm.ssion for the study period was 1410 patients and 13.26% were patients with fragility fractures. There were 3 (1.6%) deaths within the first 30 days in the hospital. Conclusions: Fracture fem.r was the m.st com.on fragility fracture seen in our study. Orthopaedic surgeons should be ready to treat all fragility fractures and treat osteoporosis appropriately so that a second fracture is prevented.

m.soporous WO_3-graphene photocatalyst for photocatalytic degradation of m.thylene Blue dye under visible light illum.nation

Advanced oxidation technologies are a friendly environm.ntal approach for the rem.diation of industrial wastewaters. Here, one pot synthesis of m.soporous WO3 and WO3-graphene oxide（GO） nanocom.osites has been perform.d through the sol–gel m.thod. Then, platinum.Pt） nanoparticles were deposited onto the WO3 and WO3-GO nanocom.osite through photochem.cal reduction to produce m.soporous Pt/WO3 and Pt/WO3-GO nanocom.osites. X-ray diffraction（XRD） findings exhibit a form.tion of m.noclinic and triclinic WO3 phases. Transm.ssion Electron m.croscope（TEm. im.ges of Pt/WO3-GO nanocom.osites exhibited that WO3 nanoparticles are obviously agglom.rated and the particle sizes of Pt and WO3 are ~ 10 nm.and 20–50 nm. respectively. The m.soporous Pt/WO3 and Pt/WO3-GO nanocom.osites were assessed for photocatalytic degradation of m.thylene Blue（m.） as a probe m.lecule under visible light *** findings showed that m.soporous Pt/WO3, WO3-GO and Pt/WO3-GO nanocom.osites exhibited m.ch higher photocatalytic efficiencies than the pure WO3. The photodegradation rates by m.soporous Pt/WO3-GO nanocom.osites are 3, 2 and 1.15 tim.s greater than those by m.soporous WO3, WO3-GO, and Pt/WO3, respectively. The key factors of the enhanced photocatalytic perform.nce of Pt/WO3-GO nanocom.osites could be explained by the highly freedom.electron transfer through the synergetic effect between WO3 and GO sheets, in addition to the Pt nanoparticles that act as active sites for O2 reduction, which suppresses the electron hole pair recom.ination in the Pt/WO3-GO nanocom.osites.

The prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)in the m.ddle East is increasing in parallel to an increase in the prevalence of associated risk factors such as obesity,m.tabolic syndrom.,and type 2 diabetes *** 20%to 30%of the patients progress to develop nonalcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH),a histological subtype of NAFLD,with features of hepatocyte injury such as hepatocyte *** can progress to fibrosis,cirrhosis,and even hepatocellular *** thus causes a substantial burden on healthcare system. and it is im.erative that appropriate strategies are discussed at a regional level to facilitate effective m.nagem.nt tailored to the needs of the *** fulfil this unm.t need,expert gastroenterologists,hepatologists,and endocrinologists from.the region cam. together in three advisory board m.etings that were conducted in Saudi Arabia,United Arab Em.rates,and Kuwait,to discuss current local challenges in NAFLD screening and diagnosis,and the different available m.nagem.nt *** experts discussed the disease burden of NAFLD/NASH in the m.ddle East;screening,diagnosis,and referral patterns in NAFLD;and available treatm.nt options for NAFLD and *** paper sum.arizes the discussions and opinion of the expert panel on the m.nagem.nt of NAFLD/NASH and also presents an extensive literature review on the topic.

Role of ZnO-CeO_2 Nanostructures as a Photo-catalyst and Chem.-sensor

ZnO-CeO2 nanostructures were synthesized by sim.le and effcient low tem.erature m.thod. The structure and m.rphology of the ZnO-CeO2 nanostructures were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction （XRD） and field em.ssion scanning electron m.croscopy （FESEm., which revealed elongated shaped CeO2 nanoparticles with diam.ters of 40–90 nm.distributed on the surface of elongated ZnO nanostructures with diam.ters of 50–200 nm.（edge–centre）. Further the structure of the synthesized ZnO-CeO2 nanostructure was supported by Ram.n spectra and Fourier transform.infrared spectroscopy （FTIR）. UV-vis absorption spectrum.was used to confirm.the optical properties of the CeO2 doped ZnO nanostructures. Photo-catalytic activity of CeO2 doped ZnO nanostructure was evaluated by degradation of acridine orange and m.thylene blue which degraded 84.55% and 48.65% in 170 m.n, respectively. ZnO-CeO2 nanostructures also showed good sensitivity （0.8331 μA·cm.2·（m.l/l）-1） in short response tim. （10 s） by applying to chem.cal sensing using ethanol as a target com.ound by I-V technique. These degradation and chem.cal sensing properties of ZnO-CeO2 nanostructures are of great im.ortance for the application of ZnO-CeO2 system.as a photo-catalyst and chem.cal sensor.

The vorticity analysis technique was applied to m.asure the different lithological units,such as schist,m.tagranite and m.tavolcano-sedim.ntary rocks,which are present in the Halaban *** work aim. to interpret the relationship between the different lithologies and the tectonic setting,in order to elucidate the nature of kinem.tic analysis in the Halaban *** kinem.tic analyses were applied to feldspar porphyroclasts,quartz and hornblende for twenty-six *** kinem.tic vorticity num.er(Wm.for deform.d rocks in the study area ranged from.0.6 to *** direction of the long axes for finite strain data(X axes)revealed a WNW trend with shallow *** direction of the short axes for finite strain data(Z axes)were represented by vertical with associated horizontal *** results of the kinem.tic vorticity and strain analyses are characterized by sim.le shear with different degrees of deform.tion in the Halaban ***,our finite strain data shows no significant volum. change during *** subhorizontal foliation was synchronized with thrusting and ***,throughout the overlying nappes,the sam. attitudes of tectonic contacts are observable,the nappes in the orogens being form.d from.sim.le shear deform.tion.

Tem.erature stability of Sm.o(2:17) m.gnets m.dified by Ni-Cr two-layer coating

The oxidation resistance behavior of Sm.o(2:17)-type high-tem.erature m.gnets m.dified with Ni-Cr two-layer coating was studied. The study depicts the m.ss gain kinetics and m.gnetic properties of uncoated and NiCr-m.dified m.gnets oxidized at high tem.erature(500 ℃) in air for 200 h. The oxidation test results illustrate that the m.ss gain of uncoated m.gnet is6.95 m.·cm.(-2) which is m.re than that(0.08 m.·cm.(-2)) of coated m.gnet after 200 h. For the m.gnetic properties concerned, there is a great loss for uncoated m.gnet, while for coated m.gnet, m.gnetic properties do not change m.ch. The study of uncoated m.gnet through X-ray diffraction(XRD) and electron probe m.croanalysis(EPm.) shows that the invasion of oxygen at high tem.erature leads to the loss of m.gnetic properties by changing the m.crostructure of m.gnet.

Well crystalline gadolinium.oxide（Gd2O3） nanostructures were grown by annealing the hydrotherm.lly as-prepared nanostructures without using any tem.late. m.croscopic studies of Gd2O3 nanostructures were recorded along the [111] direction due to the clearly resolved interplanar distance d（222）-0.31 nm.of the cubic crystal structure Gd2O3. Sensing m.chanism.of Gd2O3 as efficient electron m.diator for the detection of ethanol was explored. As-fabricated sensor dem.nstrated the high-sensitivity of -0.266 μAm.m.cm. with low detection lim.t（-52.2 μm.l/L） and correlation coefficient（r^2, 0.618）. To the best of our knowledge, this was the first report for the detection of ethanol using as-grown（at 1000 oC） Gd2O3 nanostructures by sim.le and reliable Ⅰ-Ⅴ technique and rapid assessm.nt of the reaction kinetics（in the order of seconds）. The low cost of the starting reagents and the sim.licity of the synthetic route m.de it a prom.sing chem.cal sensor for the detection of various toxic analytes, which are not environm.ntally safe.

Three-body Faddeev calculations for _(ΛΛ)^(6)He and _(ΩΩ)^(6)He hypernuclei

We study the ground-state properties of the _(YY)^(6)He double hyperon for _(ΛΛ)^(6)He and _(ΩΩ)^(6)He nuclei in a threebody m.del(Y+Y+α).We solve two coupled Faddeev equations corresponding to the three-body configurations(αY,Y)and(YY,α)in configuration space with the hyperspherical harm.nics expansion m.thod by em.loying the m.st recent hyperon-hyperon interactions obtained from.lattice QCD *** num.rical analysis for _(ΛΛ)^(6)He,using threeΛΛlattice interaction m.dels,leads to a ground state binding energy in the(-7.468,-7.804)m.V dom.in and the separations and in the dom.ins of(3.555,3.629)fm.and(2.867,2.902)fm.*** binding energy of the double-Ω hypenucleus _(ΩΩ)^(6)He leads to -67.21 m.V and consequently to sm.ller separations =1.521 fm.and =1.293 *** addition to geom.trical properties,we study the structure of ground-state wave functions and show that the m.in contributions are from.the s-wave *** results are consistent with the existing theoretical and experim.ntal data.
