Mantle Driven Early Eocene Magmatic Flare-up of the Gangdese Arc, Tibet: A Case Study on the Nymo Intrusive Complex

Magmatic periodicity is recognized in continental arcs worldwide, but the mechanism responsible for punctuated arc magmatism is controversial. Continental arcs in the Trans-Himalayan orogenic system display episodic magmatism and the most voluminous flare-up in this system was in early Eocene during the transition from subduction to collision. The close association of the flare-up with collision is intriguing. Our study employs zircon Lu-Hf and bulk rock Sr-Nd isotopes, along with mineral geochemistry, to track the melt sources of the Nymo intrusive complex and the role of mantle magma during the early Eocene flare-up of the Gangdese arc, Tibet. The Nymo intrusive complex is composed of gabbronorite, diorite, quartz diorite, and granodiorite which define an arc-related calc-alkaline suite. Zircon U-Pb ages reveal that the complex was emplaced between ~50–47 Ma. Zircon Hf isotopes yield εHf(t) values of 8.2–13.1, while whole-rock Sr and Nd isotopes yield εNd(t) values of 2.7–6.5 indicative of magmatism dominated by melting of a juvenile mantle source with only minor crustal assimilation(~15%–25%) as indicated by assimilation and fractional crystallization modeling. Together with published data, the early Eocene magmatic flare-up was likely triggered by slab breakoff of subducted oceanic lithosphere at depths shallower than the overriding plate. The early Eocene magmatic flare-up may have contributed to crustal thickening of the Gangdese arc. This study provides important insights into the magmatic flare-up and its significant role in the generation of large batholiths during the transition from subduction to collision.

北天山增生杂岩带是北天山洋最终闭合的产物,对其中分布的晚古生代火山岩开展详细的地质学、年代学和地球化学研究对恢复古亚洲洋的构造演化历史具有重要的科学意义。笔者选取北天山增生杂岩带巴音沟石炭纪安山岩为研究对象,在详细的野外地质调查基础之上、对其开展系统的岩石学、矿物学、地质年代学以及全岩主微量地球化学综合分析。研究发现:①北天山巴音沟中的这套安山岩具有较低的全岩MgO含量(6%),但其具有较高的Mg#值(>45),结合其微量元素特征,表明安山岩形成于与板块俯冲相关的汇聚板块边缘,其中幔源物质参与了安山岩的形成和演化。②LA-ICP-MS锆石U-Pb加权平均年龄为(324.1±1.1)Ma(MSWD=1.5),代表了巴音沟安山岩的形成时代为早石炭世晚期的霍夫期。文中的北天山石炭纪安山岩是基性下地壳部分熔融形成的长英质熔体和幔源熔体混合的产物。结合区域地质资料,进一步限定了北天山洋在早石炭世晚期可能仍然没有闭合。

Petrology and Geochemistry of the Dangqiong Ophiolite,Western Yarlung-Zangbo Suture Zone,Tibet,China

The Dangqiong ophiolite, the largest in the western segment of the Yarlung-Zangbo Suture Zone(YZSZ)ophiolite belt in southern Tibet, consists of discontinuous mantle peridotite and intrusive mafic rocks. The former is composed dominantly of harzburgite, with minor dunite, locally lherzolite and some dunite containing lenses and veins of chromitite. The latter, mafic dykes(gabbro and diabase dykes), occur mainly in the southern part. This study carried out geochemical analysis on both rocks. The results show that the mantle peridotite has Fo values in olivine from 89.92 to 91.63 and is characterized by low aluminum contents(1.5–4.66 wt%) and high Mg# values(91.06–94.53) of clinopyroxene. Most spinels in the Dangqiong peridotites have typical Mg# values ranging from 61.07 to 72.52, with corresponding Cr# values ranging from 17.67 to 31.66, and have TiO2 contents from 0 to 0.09%, indicating only a low degree of partial melting(10–15%). The olivine-spinel equilibrium and spinel chemistry of the Dangqiong peridotites suggest that they originated deeper mantle(>20 kbar). The gabbro dykes show N-MORB-type patterns of REE and trace elements. The presence of amphibole in the Dangqiong gabbro suggests the late-stage alteration of subduction-derived fluids. All the lherzolites and harzburgites in Dangqiong have similar distribution patterns of REE and trace elements, the mineral chemistry in the harzburgites and lherzolites indicates compositions similar to those of abyssal and forearc peridotites, suggesting that the ophiolite in Dangqiong formed in a MOR environment and then was modified by late-stage melts and fluids in a suprasubduction zone(SSZ) setting. This formation process is consistent with that of the Luobusa ophiolite in the eastern Yarlung-Zangbo Suture Zone and Purang ophiolite in the western Yarlung-Zangbo Suture Zone.

Mineralogy and Geochemistry of the High-Cr Podiform Chromitite from the Cuobuzha Ophiolite, Yarlung Zangbo Suture Zone, Western Tibet, China: Implication for its Origin

The Cuobuzha high-Cr chromitites in the western segment of Yarlung Zangbo Suture Zone of Tibet are mainly hosted in the harzburgites as massive type, which are characterized by high concentrations of platinum group elements(PGE) ranging from 380 to 577 ppb, and low Pd/Ir ratios(<0.1). In mid-ocean ridge basalts(MORB)-normalized spidergrams, chromites of the Cuobuzha chromitites are depleted in Al, Ga, V, Mg and Zn, and enriched in Mn and Cr, sharing similar patterns with those of ophiolitic boninites in the Bonin and Thetford Mines. Approximately 20 platinum group mineral(PGM) grains were discovered from the samples, including laurite, erlichmanite, Os-Fe alloy, cuproiridsite, and irarsite. The PGM assemblages indicate that sulfur fugacity was initially low enough to allow the precipitation of Os-Fe alloy and increased thereafter, with the fall in temperature. Primary Fe-Ni and Fe-Cr alloys, which are stable in a highly reduced environment, occur as inclusions within chromites or clinopyroxenes. Calculated results show that the parental magma has an intimate affinity with boninites. Based on our observations, a model is proposed wherein the Cuobuzha chromitites contain high-pressure and low-pressure chromites. Low-pressure chromites were formed via reaction between boninitic melts and peridotites, during which the high-pressure chromites hosting highly reduced minerals were mobilized by melts and were reallocated to podiform chromitites.

Petrological and Os Isotopic Characteristics of Zedong Peridotites in the Eastern Yarlung–Zangbo Suture in Tibet

The Zedong ophiolites in the eastern Yarlung-Zangbo suture zone of Tibet represent a mantle slice of more than 45 km2. This massif consists mainly of mantle peridotites, with lesser gabbros, diabases and volcanic rocks. The mantle peridotites are mostly harzburgite, lherzolite; a few dike-like bodies of dunite are also present. Mineral structures show that the peridotites experienced plastic deformation and partial melting. Olivine （Fos9.7-91.2）, orthopyroxene （Enss-92）, clinopyroxene （En4-49Wo47-slFS2-4） and spinel [Mg^#=lOOxMg/（Mg＋Fe）]=49.1-70.7; Cr^#=（100xCr/（Cr＋Al）=18.8-76.5] are the major minerals. The degree of partial melting of mantle peridotites is 10%-40%, indicating that the Zedong mantle peridotites may experience a multi-stage process. The peridotites are characterized by depleted major element compositions and low REE content （0.08-0.62 ppm）. Their ＂spoon-shaped＂ primitivemantle normalized REE patterns with （La/Sm）N being 0.50-6.00 indicate that the Zedong ultramafic rocks belong to depleted residual mantle rocks. The PGE content of Zedong peridotites （18.19-50.74 ppb） is similar with primary mantle with Pd/Ir being 0.54-0.60 and Pt/Pd being 1.09-1.66. The Zedong peridotites have variable, unradiogenic Os isotopic compositions with 187Os/18Os=0.1228 to 0.1282. A corollary to this interpretation is that the convecting upper mantle is heterogeneous in Os isotopes. All data of the Zedong peridotites suggest that they formed originally at a mid-ocean ridge （MOR） and were later modified in supra-subduction zone （SSZ） environment.

Geochronology and Geochemistry of the Subduction-related Rocks with High Sr/Y Ratios in the Zedong Area: Implications for the Magmatism in Southern Lhasa Terrane during Late Cretaceous

The southern Lhasa Terrane is famous for its huge magmatic belt which records the magmatism during Mesozoic and Cenozoic. Although the Mesozoic continental-margin setting in the southern Lhasa Terrane has been identified, details of this tectonic setting and the evolution history during the Late Cretaceous remain unclear. To further constrain these issues, we present zircon LA-ICP-MS U-Pb, Hf isotopic and geochemical data of the Gongbari dacites （of the Sangri Group） which intruded by Paleocene granodiorites from the eastern part of the southern Lhasa Terrane, Tibet. New age data indicate that the dacites were generated at -95.4 Ma, which suggests the Sangri Group volcanism may last to Late Cretaceous. The Gongbari dacites are characterized by high Sr （428-758 ppm） contents, low concentration of heavy rare earth elements and Y （e.g. Yb=0.78-1.14 ppm; Y=8.85-11.4 ppm） with high Sr/Y （41.91-67.59） and La/Yb （22.64-30.64） ratios, similar to those of adakite. The rocks are calc-alkaline, metaluminous, enriched in LILEs, depleted in HFSEs, and have positive tar（t） values （＋7.7 to ＋11.6）. The Gongbari dacites were probably produced by partial melting of young and hot subducted Neo- Tethyan oceanic crust under amphibolite to garnet amphibolite-facies conditions. Though the Gangdese Mountains may have formed before Indo-Asian collision, the southern margin of Lhasa Terrane might not go through obviously crustal thickening during the northward subduction of Neo-Tethyan oceanic lithosphere.

Tectonic Implications and Petrogenesis of the Various Types of Magmatic Rocks from the Zedang Area in Southern Tibet

In this study,we report systematically field observations,geochronology,whole-rock geochemistry and Sr-Nd-Hf isotopic dataset on the various types of magmatic rocks collected from the Zedang ***,the diabase and gabbro have a low-K calc-alkaline affinity,whereas the basalt and plagiogranite have medium to high-K calc-alkaline *** addition,the basalts are highly enriched in light rare earth elements(LREE)and large ion lithophile elements(LILE),but strongly depleted in high strength field elements(HFSE),indicating that their magma source probably was derived from a subduction-or arc-related *** contrast,both the gabbro and diabase mainly demonstrate an N-MORB-like affinity consistent with normal mid-oceanic ridge basalt(N-MORB)*** zircon U-Pb dating results suggest that the basalts were crystallized earlier at ca.158–161 Ma(Oxfordian stage),but the gabbro was crystallized at ca.131 Ma(Hauterivian stage of Early Cretaceous).The zircon U-Pb dating results correspond with the field observations that the veins of gabbro intruded ***,the plagiogranite has a weighted mean age of ca.160 Ma(MSWD=2.1)consistent with the basalt within the *** basalt and the plagiogranite have significantly positiveεHf(t)values(+5.8 to+15.6 and+8.6 to+16.1,respectively),suggesting that they were originated from partial melting of a depleted ***,basalt and plagiogranite are characterized by the wide variations ofεHf(t)values indicating minor amounts of exotic crustal material input during the later magma ***,the basalt shows duplex geochemical features of island-arc and mid-oceanic ridge basalt,corresponding to the supra-subduction zone-(SSZ)type *** sum up,two distinct magmatic events identified in this study probably suggest an intra-oceanic arc system existing in the Zedang area during the Late Jurassic,but the intra-oceanic arc subduction extinguished in the Early Cretaceous as suggested b

Platinum-group Mineral(PGM) and Base-metal Sulphide(BMS) Inclusions in Chromitites of the Zedang Ophiolite, Southern Tibet, China and their Petrogenetic Significance

Voluminous platinum-group mineral （PGM） inclusions including erlichmanite （Os,Ru）S2, laurite （Ru,Os）S2, and irarsite （Ir, Os,Ru,Rh）AsS, as well as native osmium Os（Ir） and inclusions of base metal sulphides （BMS）, including millerite （NiS）, heazlewoodite （NiaS2）, covellite （CuS） and digenite （Cu3S2）, accompanied by native iron, have been identified in chromitites of the Zedang ophiolite, Tibet. The PGMs occur as both inclusions in magnesiochromite grains and as small interstitial granules between them; most are less than 10 ~m in size and vary in shape from euhedral to anhedral. They occur either as single or composite （biphase or polyphase） grains composed solely of PGM, or PGM associated with silicate grains. Os-, Ir-, and Ru-rich PGMs are the common species and Pt-, Pd-, and Rh-rich varieties have not been identified. Sulfur fugacity and temperature appear to be the main factors that controlled the PGE mineralogy during crystallization of the host chromitite in the upper mantle. If the activity of chalcogenides （such as S, and As） is low, PGE clusters will remain suspended in the silicate melt until they can coalesce to form alloys. Under appropriate conditions of fS2 and fO2, PGE alloys might react with the melt to form sulfides-sulfarsenides. Thus, we suggest that the Os, Ir and Ru metallic clusters and alloys in the Zedang chromitites crystallized first under high temperature and low fS2, followed by crystallization of sulphides of the laurite-erlichmanite, solid-solution series as the magma cooled and fS2 increased. The abundance of primary BMS in the chromitites suggests that fS2 reached relatively high values during the final stages of magnesiochromite crystallization. The diversity of the PGE minerals, in combination with differences in the petrological characteristics of the magnesiochromites, suggest different degrees of partial melting, perhaps at different depths in the mantle.
