comparison of seldinger and trocar techniques in the percutaneous treatment of hydatid cysts

AIM To comparatively evaluate Seldinger and Trocar techniques in the percutaneous treatment of hydatid disease. METHODS Trocar and Seldinger techniques were used for 49 and 56 cysts, respectively, among 106 hydatid cysts in 88 patients. The number of males and females were 22 and 66, respectively with a mean age of 44.9 years(range, 15-87). Follow-up studies included cyst diameter, cyst contents, and morphological changes inthe cyst wall, local recurrence, and secondary invasion, using ultrasound, computerized tomography and chest X-rays. RESULTS The positive criteria of healing were a decrease in cyst diameter, progressive solidification of the cyst contents, and disappearance of the cyst. Local recurrence was defined as an increase in the cyst diameter and contents, and appearance of daughter cysts in the primary cavity, while secondary dissemination was defined as the appearance of new cysts outside the treated cyst. Mean duration of follow-up was 19.23 mo(range, 18-26 mo). Follow-up results demonstrated that no significant differences were present between the Trocar and Seldinger techniques in the percentage of decrease in the cyst volume, rate of early complications, local recurrence and secondary dissemination(P = 0.384, 0.069, 0.215 and 0.533, respectively). cONcLUSION There are no differences between the Seldinger and Trocar techniques that gain entry to the cyst cavity in terms of the efficacy of the treatment and the rates of early and late complications.

Hydrodynamics of Euglena Gracilis during locomotion

The hydrodynamics and locomotion mechanism of Euglena Gracilis(***)is investigated using microscopic shadow imaging and micro particle image velocimetry(MicroPIV).Three distinct locomotion modes were observed:translation,spin,and left/right *** the flagellum was not possible to image,the strokes were identified by evaluating the flow field around the *** flow field information is obtained using a phase-separated PIV evaluation,which uses a histogram-thresholding based dynamic masking *** temporal resolution of the experiment was sufficient to identify the sequence of two modes,translation and spin,and the stroke-pulling *** flow field result during a stroke is compared with existing Stokeslet dipole theories and flow disturbance decay with distance is *** results indicate that the organism has a complex locomotion technique that allows the change of direction,axial orientation and propulsion.

AIM:To compare the efficacy of bevacizumab,ranibizumab,and aflibercept in pseudophakic cystoid macular edema(cME)patients with Irvine-Gass syndrome(IGS).METHODS:This study is designed as retrospective consecutive case *** who developed postoperative pseudophakic cME that refractory to topical treatment and were treated with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)agents included in the *** coherence tomography(OcT)examination including central macular thickness(cMT),total macular volume(TMV),retinal nerve fiber layer(RNFL),ganglion cell layer(GcL)and choroidal thickness(chT)measurements at the baseline,1 st,3 rd and 6 th month controls were ***:Fifty-nine eyes of 59 patients with cME and other healthy eyes of the patients(control group)were *** were 22 eyes of 22 patients in the bevacizumab group(group 1),19 eyes of 19 patients in the ranibizumab group(group 2),and 18 eyes of 18 patients in the aflibercept group(group 3).There was no difference in terms of age,gender,axial length,IOP,and spherical equivalent *** baseline subfoveal and mean chT were higher in the IGS *** difference between the baseline and sixth month values of subfoveal and mean chT were compared in the cME groups,thinning was observed in all three *** was thinner in the patient group at the 6 th month of *** resolution time of cME was observed faster in group ***:All three anti-VEGF agents seem to be effective in cME but bevacizumab appears to be slightly more cost-effective than the other two alternatives.

Effects of precommercial thinning intensity on growth of Fagus orientalis Lipsky stands over 6 years

Determining the most suitable intensities for precommercial thinning (PcT) in oriental beech (Fagus orientalis) stands, which cover substantial areas in Turkey and have a high economic and ecological value, is essential to provide higher economic return and obtain well-formed stems. The effects of various rates of PcT interventions on the growth characteristics of natural stands, located in the northern part of Turkey, were explored to determine appropriate thinning rates;24 experimental PcT plots (4 PcT rates × 3 replications × 2 sites) were established in young thicket-stage stands and four precommercial thinning rates such as light (1 – 1.5 m spacing), moderate (1.5−2.0 m spacing) and heavy (2.5–3.0 m spacing) thinning, including a control plot (i.e., untreated), were applied. At the end of the 2007 and 2010 growing seasons, the diameter and height of the trees were measured and growth analyzed based on the 3-year and 6-year incremental growth. PcT levels were found to have significant (P cts on diameter, height, total basal area and total volume increment at the end of each period. The mean diameter and height increment proportionally increased with increasing PcT intensity in the third and the sixth year. In both sites, the moderate PcT provided the greatest total basal area and total volume increment. The early results indicate that the moderate PcT (1.5–2 m spacing) boosted stand development over time.

Effects of Pre-strain and Temperature on Bake Hardening of TWIP900cR Steel

The effects of pre-strain and baking temperature on bake hardening behaviour of TWIP900cR steel were investi- gated. The results reveal that the bake hardening process contributes to an increase in yield strength up to 65 MPa at the baking temperature of 200 ℃. The difference in yield strength between baking temperatures of 170 and 200 ℃ is al- most insignificant. It is clearly observed that baking at a high temperature does not result in a significant increase in yield strength. For a reasonable bake hardening, a good combination of pre strain and baking temperature is necessa- ry. Besides, the toughness of the material is found to decrease with increasing pre-strain.

Role of insulin and insulin resistance in androgen excess disorders

Insulin has complex effects on cell growth,metabolism and differentiation,and these effects are mediated by a cell-surface bound receptor and eventually a cascade of intracellular signaling *** the several metabolic and growth-promoting effects of insulin,insulin resistance is defined as an attenuated effect of insulin on glucose metabolism,primarily the limited export of blood glucose into skeletal muscle and adipose *** the other hand,not all the signaling pathways and insulin-responsive tissues are equally affected,and some effects other than the metabolic actions of insulin are *** and the adrenal glands are two examples of tissues remaining sensitive to insulin actions where insulin may contribute to increased androgen *** ovary syndrome(PcOS)is the most common form of androgen excess disorder(AED),and its pathogenesis is closely associated with insulin *** with idiopathic hirsutism also exhibit insulin resistance,albeit lower than patients with *** it is not as evident as in PcOS,patients with congenital adrenal hyperplasia may have insulin resistance,which may be further exacerbated with glucocorticoid overtreatment and *** patients with severe insulin resistance syndromes,irrespective of the type of disease,hyperinsulinemia promotes ovarian androgen synthesis independently of *** is highly debated in whom and how insulin resistance should be diagnosed and treated among patients with AEDs,including *** is not suitable to administer an insulin sensitizer relying on only some mathematical models used for estimating insulin ***,the treatment decision should be based on the constellation of the signs,symptoms and presence of obesity;acanthosis nigricans;and some laboratory abnormalities such as impaired glucose tolerance and impaired fasting glucose.

Diabetic neuropathy results in vasomotor dysfunction of medium sized peripheral arteries

Idiopathic hirsutism:Is it really idiopathic or is it misnomer?

Invasive carassius carp in Georgia： current state of knowledge and future perspectives

In Georgia, crucian carp carassius carassius （Linnaeus, 1758） was known from only one locality after kessler＇s record （1877-1878） with no new findings until 1985. Since then c. carassius rapidly and simultaneously invaded almost all water bodies of Georgia. In 2004, it was for the first time noted that this invasive carassius sp. could not be a c. carassius, but was a form of carassius gibelio （Bloch, 1792）. However no further data is available about this invasive species in Georgia. The aim of the present study was to investigate taxonomic status of carassius sp. in Georgia using mtDNA phylogenetic analyses and mor- phometrie study of truss network system. Genetic analysis revealed that invasive carassius sp. is closely related to the c. gibelio from Turkey and other countries. In contrast, morphometrically carassius sp. from Georgia can be easily differentiated from those of Turkey indicating high intraspecific variability. This is the first time discussion on the current knowledge of the present distribution of invasive carp in Georgia with identifying current problems and future research directions needed.
