Mitigation Rice Yield Scaled Methane Emission and Soil Salinity Stress with Feasible Soil Amendments

Sea level rise and saline water intrusion have been affecting land use and crop production especially rice in the coastal areas of major rice growing countries including Bangladesh. The upward trend in salinity intrusion has been hampering crop production, particularly rice cultivation in the coastal areas of Bangladesh. Therefore, an experiment was conducted on rice planted saline soils under the Nethouse at Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh to improve the properties of salt affected soils for rice cultivation as well as controlling methane (CH4) emissions with feasible soil organic amendments and recommended inorganic fertilizers. The experimental treatments were arranged under 25 mM NaCl, 50 mM NaCl and 75 mM NaCl salinity levels with different combinations of NPKSZn, biochar, phosphogypsum and Trichocompost. It was found that CH4 emission rates were suppressed with phospho-gypsum and biochar amendments within the salinity level 25 mM to 50 mM, beyond this salinity level (at 75 mM), soil amendments were not effective to control CH4 emissions. From panicle initiation to grain ripening stages treatment T4 (100% NPKSZn + 75 mM NaCl stress) showed the highest CH4 emission rate, while lower CH4 emission rate was recorded in T5 (100% NPKSZn + 25 mM NaCl stress + Phospho-gypsum) and T8 treatment (100% NPKSZn + 50 mM NaCl + Phospho-gypsum). Awareness and Practice on Household Solid Waste Management among the Community People

Household solid waste management is a major public health concern in the community people and closely related to daily human life. Community people can play a pivotal role in managing household solid waste. Objectives: This study was aimed to assess the awareness and practice of household solid waste management among the people living in the Mugda community in Dhaka. Methods: A descriptive co-relational study design was used. A total of 112 participants were selected with the convenience sampling technique. The data collection period was from July 2019 to June 2020. The data were collected from the participants by face-to-face interview through the door-to-door survey by using a structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed by using descriptive, Pearson correlation, t-test, and one-way ANOVA statistics. Results: Finding of the study shows that the mean awareness regarding household solid waste management was 7.96 (SD = 1.64) and the mean practice was 2.94 (SD = 1.35) respectively. It indicates that the awareness and practice of community people were at a moderate level. In bivariate analysis, it has been shown that training on household solid waste management (“P Conclusion: Overall awareness and practice level of household solid waste management were at a moderate level among the community people. Training on household solid waste management and recyclable waste management were statistically significantly correlated with household solid waste management. Policymakers can use this baseline data to make a strategy for increasing awareness among the community people.

Molecular Diversity Analysis of Some Chilli (<i>Capsicum</i>spp.) Genotypes Using SSR Markers

Chilli belongs to the genus Capsicum which possesses enormous wealth of genetic diversity. Extent of genetic diversity determines the success level of crop improvement programme. Simple sequence repeats (SSRs) are the most widely used marker system for molecular diversity analysis especially in cultivated species. The aim of our present study was to assess the molecular genetic diversity of 20 local chilli genotypes of Bangladesh using SSR markers. Genomic DNA was extracted from young leaves and PCR reactions were performed. Eleven SSR primers were used in PCR amplification. Total 10 alleles were detected for the five polymorphic SSR loci, with a mean of 2.00 alleles per primer. Gene diversity ranged from 0.333 to 1.00 with an average of 0.567. Polymorphic Information Content (PIC) values of the SSR primers ranged from 0.255 to 0.500 with an average value of 0.371. The similarity index matrix ranged from 0.00 to 1.000. It was highest in several germplasms viz. Pop-2 vs Pop-18;Pop-3 vs Pop-5 vs Pop-19 vs Pop-20 and the lowest in the germplasm Pop-8 vs Pop-18. Dendrogram based on Nei’s genetic distance using Unweighted Pair Group Method of Arithmetic Means (UPGMA) indicated the segregation of 20 chilli genotypes into two main clusters. The SSR markers showed genetic variability in the studied pepper genotypes and they are powerful tools for estimating molecular diversity of chilli. The findings of the present study have potential applications in future breeding programme for the genetic improvement of chilli.
