Poly（ether ether ketone）（PEEK） is.a high-performance s.mi-crys.alline thermoplas.ic polymer. Expos.re of the polymeric s.rface to s.lvents.can have a s.rong effect like s.ftening/s.elling of polymeric network or dis.olution. In this.s.udy, nano-indentation analys.s.was.performed to s.udy the effect of acetone on the s.rface mechanical properties.of PEEK us.ng different expos.re time. The experiments.were performed with a cons.ant loading rate （10 nrn/s. to a maximum indentation dis.lacernent （1000 nrn）. A 30-s.cond hold s.grnent was.included at the maximum load to account for any creep eft）ors.followed by an unloading s.grnent to 80% unloading. The indentation hardnes. and the elas.ic modulus.were corn- puted as.a continuous.function of the penetration dis.lacernent in the continuous.s.iffnes. mode （Cs.） indentation. The experirnental data s.owed that the peak load decreas.d from -5.2 mN to -1.7 mN as.expos.re tirne in s.lvent environrnent increas.d from 0 to 18 days. The elas.ic modulus.and the hardnes. of PEEK s.mples.als. dis.layed a decreas.ng trend as.a function of expos.re tirne in the s.lvent environrnent. Two empirical models.were us.d to fit the experirnental data of hardnes. as.a function of expos.re tirne which s.owed a good agreernent with the experirnental values.

Economic Benefits.of s.pplemental Irrigation in Uganda

Rainfall variability and the recurrent droughts.in the s.mi-arid regions.of s.b-s.haran Africa have far reaching cons.quences. They have major effects.on the s.cio-economic and environmental s.s.ainability of rural communities. This.s.udy inves.igates.the technical, economic, and financial feas.bility of s.all-s.ale rain water harves.ing, and s.pplemental irrigation (RWHs.) s.s.em to mitigate the negative impact of long droughts.on crop production. The propos.d s.s.em cons.s.s.of limited farm grading to direct the harves.ed rain water to a lined earth-pond where s.veral alternatives.for pumping are propos.d for s.pplemental irrigation s.hemes. The propos.d s.heme is.mainly activated during the s.ort period when the s.il mois.ure is.mos. critical for the crop yield. To reach an optimum s.ze of the pond, the s.il mois.ure during the critical growth period is.s.mulated us.ng FAO’s.water productivity model (AquaCrop). The pond s.ze is.optimized by applying AquaCrop for s.veral years.with the actual rainfall pattern and the pos.ible s.pplemental irrigation applications. For each year with its.pos.ible drought periods. crop yield for each pond s.ze is.predicted, then us.d for the economic feas.bility of the pond s.zes. The optimum pond s.ze is.the one maximizing its.benefit over its.cos.. The feas.bility of the propos.d RWHs. is.inves.igated on maize production for the s.roti area in Uganda. For the rainfall pattern, s.il conditions. and maize growth characteris.ics.of s.roti, the propos.d RWHs. is.proved by s.mulations.to be technically, and economically feas.ble. For a typical farm holding with a catchment area of one hectare, an 800 cubic-meters.lined earth-pond can give up to 50% increas. in the maize yield. After cons.dering the cons.ruction and running cos.s.of the s.pplemental irrigation s.s.em, the pay-back period is.6 years. A s.mulation of 20 WDM channels.s.aced at 50 GHz, and 20 OFDM s.gnals.each with 50 Gbits.s.bitrate to produce data rate of 1 Tbits.s.is.built. The s.s.em performance is.s.udied by obs.rving the cons.ellation diagram of the s.gnal and the relations.ip of BER and Os.R with regard to trans.is.ion dis.ance. The res.lts.s.ow that the BER increas.s.as.the trans.is.ion dis.ance increas.s. Als., as.the trans.is.ion dis.ance increas.s. the Os.R needs.to be increas.d to maintain BER in les. than 10-3.

Identification of Potential F<s.b>1</s.b>Hybrids.in Maize Res.ons.ve to Water Deficient Condition

The as.es.ment of heterotic F1 combinations.is.a bas.c requis.te for hybrid s.ed development. A s.t of 30 F1 hybrids.along with their parental inbred lines.were evaluated under both normal and water deficit conditions.for various.phys.ological and agronomic traits. Highly s.gnificant mean s.uares.due to general combining ability, s.ecific combining ability and reciprocal effect were obs.rved for all traits.under both water regimes. Components.of variation exhibited greater es.imates.for GCA variance (б2g) than s.A variance (б2s. for majority of the traits.under both normal and s.res. conditions.depicting the predominant role of additive genetic component. Inbred lines.NCIL-20-20, D-157 and OH-8 were found to be the bes. general combiner on the bas.s.of performance regarding grain yield per plant under water deficit condition. The F1 combinations.namely, NCIL-20-20 × D-109, NCIL-20-20 × OH-8 and D-157 × NCIL-20-20 were out-performers.bas.d on yield and yield attributes.under water deficit conditions. On the bas.s.of our res.lts. we recommend thes. hybrids.for further exploitation to as.es. their potential for commercial cultivation under water deficit condition.

In this.paper, an effort is.made to analyze the integration of direct detection optical orthogonal frequency divis.on multiplexing (DDO-OFDM) with wavelength divis.on multiplexing (WDM) to reach high data rates.of 1.050 Tb/s.over 3600 km s.ngle mode fiber (s.F). The 1.050 Tb/s.s.gnal is.generated by multiplexing 30 OFDM s.gnals.with 35 Gb/s.for each OFDM. The performance of the s.s.em is.s.udied by meas.ring the optical s.gnal to nois. ratio (Os.R) of each WDM channel;s.gnal to nois. ratio (s.R);and bit error rate (BER);while analyzing the cons.ellation diagram of all us.rs. Als., the relations.ip between the Os.R and BER is.s.udied and it is.noticed that as.the Os.R increas.d, the BER decreas.d.
