Salt-Affected Soil Mapping in an Arid Environment Using Semi-Empirical Model and Landsat-OLI Data

The aim of this research is to map the salt-affected soil in an arid environment using an advanced semi-empirical predictive model, Operational Land Imager (OLI) data, a digital elevation model (DEM), field soil sampling, and laboratory and statistical analyses. To achieve our objectives, the OLI data were atmospherically corrected, radiometric sensor drift was calibrated, and distortions of topography and geometry were corrected using a DEM. Then, the soil salinity map was derived using a semi-empirical predictive model based on the Soil Salinity and Sodicity Index-2 (SSSI-2). The vegetation cover map was extracted from the Transformed Difference Vegetation Index (TDVI). In addition, accurate DEM of 5-m pixels was used to derive topographic attributes (elevation and slope). Visual comparisons and statistical validation of the semi-empirical model using ground truth were undertaken in order to test its capability in an arid environment for moderate and strong salinity mapping. To accomplish this step, fieldwork was organized and 120 soil samples were collected with various degrees of salinity, including non-saline soil samples. Each one was automatically labeled using a digital camera and an accurate global positioning system (GPS) survey (σ ≤ ± 30 cm) connected in real time to the geographic information system (GIS) database. Subsequently, in the laboratory, the major exchangeable cations (Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, Cl- and SO42-), pH and the electrical conductivity (EC-Lab) were extracted from a saturated soil paste, as well as the sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) being calculated. The EC-Lab, which is generally accepted as the most effective method for soil salinity quantification was used for statistical analysis and validation purposes. The obtained results demonstrated a very good conformity between the derived soil salinity map from OLI data and the ground truth, highlighting six major salinity classes: Extreme, very high, high, moderate, low and non-saline. Breeding effects on the genotype×environment interaction for yield of durum wheat grown after the Green Revolution:The case of Spain

This study evaluates the changes caused by breeding in the genotype by environment(G×E)interaction of the durum wheat varieties most widely cultivated in Spain after the Green Revolution.A set of 12 cultivars was tested in 27 environments,which are understood as the combination of different sites,years,and treatments(water regime and planting dates),representative of the durum wheat growing conditions in Spain with average grain yields(GY)ranging between 2.8 and 9.1 Mg ha^-*** most important environmental factors affecting the G×E interaction for yield were themaximum and the mean temperature during the entire crop *** improvement in genetic yield was observed in warm environments and under optimal water conditions that resemble those where the germplasm originated(essentially as advanced lines)before its release in ***,the adaptation of semi-dwarf durum in Spain has shown a tendency to specific adaptation rather than large-scale *** different patterns of selection have been reported due the G×E interaction and changes in the ranking of genotypes:in the high yielding environments(GY>5 Mg ha^-1),plants favor increased water uptake,with higher levels of transpiration and more open stomata(more negative values of carbon isotope composition,δ^13 C,and higher canopy temperature depression,CTD),whereas,in low yielding environments(GY<5 Mg ha^-1)plants close their stomata and favor greater water use efficiency(less negativeδ^13 C values and lower CTD values).

Evaluation of chronic idiopathic tinnitus and its psychosocial triggers

BACKGROUND The tinnitus susceptibility patterns in relation to different psychological and life stressors are unknown in different *** To determine the comorbid psychosocial factors and behaviors associated with tinnitus and the predictors for the increase in its *** Participants were 230 adults(males=70;females=160;mean age=38.6±3.3).They underwent audiograms,speech discrimination and masking testing,and neuropsychiatric *** used for assessment included tinnitus handicap inventory,depression anxiety stress scale 21(DASS-21),perceived stress scale(PSS),and insomnia severity index(ISI).RESULTS Patients had mean duration of tinnitus of 11.5±2.5 *** had intact hearing perception at 250-8000 Hz and 95(41.3%)had aggravation of tinnitus loudness by masking *** tinnitus was reported in 77%(n=177).The majority had clinically significant insomnia(81.3%),somatic symptoms(75%)other than tinnitus and perceived moderate(46.1%)and high(44.3%)stress to *** severe/extremely severe symptoms of depression,anxiety and stress were reported in 17.4%,35.7%and 44.3%,*** with decompensated type had significantly higher scores for ISI(P=0.001)and DASS-21(depression=0.02,anxiety=0.01,stress=0.001)compared to those with compensated *** interviewing showed that 35.7%had non-specific anxiety disorder,17.4%had major depression,and 19.6%fulfilled the criteria of somatization *** analysis showed that the only independent predictors for tinnitus severity were the duration of tinnitus[odd ratios(OR)=0.832,95%CI:0.640-1.158;P=0.001]and PSS(OR=0.835,95%CI:0.540-1.125;P=0.001)*** To the best of our knowledge,this is the first study in our culture to evaluate the causal relationship between psychological factors and tinnitus onset,severity and *** could be the earliest and dominant somatic symptom induced by life stressors and psychological vulnerabilitie

Induction of DnaK upon <i>γ</i>-Irradiation at High and Low Rates in <i>Escherichia coli</i>

DnaK is implicated in protein folding, repair and degradation. Its protective role during heat shock is well documented and many other stresses can also induce its production. Using a competitive ELISA, intracellular DnaK concentrations were determined in Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 exposed to a γ-irradiation dose of 0.3 KGy applied either at high (8 × 10-2 KGy/min) or low rates (3 × 10-3 KGy/min) and with or without a recuperation period of 22 h at 37℃ post-treatment. All four irradiation treatments reduced cell counts similarly and significantly compared to the control (P < 0.0001). However, the highest DnaK concentration was observed in cells irradiated at low rate without recuperation (105,416 molecules/cell;P = 0.0001). Furthermore, DnaK levels remained higher than the control (38,500 molecules/ cell) after the recuperation period (P < 0.05). Variation in the intracellular DnaK concentration indicates that the bacterial stress response was modulated differently according to the irradiation treatment (P = 0.0001).

Retrospective Study of Tuberculosis in the Province of Kenitra (Morocco)

Tuberculosis is a ubiquitous and contagious infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Koch’s bacillus). Morocco considers tuberculosis a strategic priority, mobilizing human and material resources to fight it. The objective was to describe the distribution of the disease socio-economic and geographic factors in the province of Kenitra. This was a transverse descriptive retrospective study of 1005 cases of intra- and extra-pulmonary tuberculosis carried out from January 1, 2017, to December 31, 2017, in tuberculosis and respiratory disease screening and treatment center. This study was based on the use of the files of tuberculosis patients who were diagnosed and treated at the center. The parameters studied are age, sex, municipality and place of residence. Genexpert techniques to differentiate between positive and negative microscopic tuberculosis were used. The results showed that the average age of Tuberculosis patients is 36.95 years, the minimum age is 12 months, and the oldest is 87 years old. The 30 - 44 age group is the most affected by 42%, followed by that of 15 - 29 years (29%), the oldest 75 - 90 are the least affected. The survey also revealed that men and Inactive people are more affected by the disease with infection rates of 60.95% and 39% respectively, followed by women 38.8%, the employees (35%), then students 16%. In rural areas, we recorded a rate of 58.26% ahead of cities 41.73%. This study has shown that the determinants of tuberculosis are manifold and relate mainly to unfavorable socioeconomic conditions, linked to poverty, population growth, human migration, which explains the incidence of the disease from the point of socio-economic view.

Structural analogues of bicyclic peroxides belonging to the G factors family have been synthesised under Mannieh type conditions, followed by an autoxidation step furnishing exclusively the peroxide. As electron transfer from heine or free iron to peroxide is the first step in the mode of action ofartemisinin -like compound, Fe（fl） induced reduction was studied and the reactivity of the intermediate C-centered radical formed was correlated to the antimalarial activity. Dissociative electron transfer was studied by electrochemistry and allowed the evaluation of the standard reduction potentials and other pertinent thermochemical information. These bicyclic peroxides were evaluated in vitro against Plasmodium falciparum and revealed moderate to good activity.
