The effect of nebivolol on the production of nitric oxide induced by bacterial lipopolysaccharide and peptidoglycan in mice

Nitric oxide (NO) plays a pivotal role in main- taining balance of physiological events in many systems including the autonomic, cardiovas- cular, hematological, and pulmonary systems. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and peptidoglycan (PGN), components of the outer cell membranes of Gram-negative bacteria and cell walls of Gram-positive bacteria respectively, are in- criminated in NO-induced septic shock. Ne- bivolol is a third generation β1- adrenoceptor blocker with a vasodilatory property attributed to enhanced availability of nitric oxide and re- duction of cellular oxidative stress through an unknown mechanism. The current study ex- plored the hypothesis that if nebivolol enhances the availability of NO, pretreatment with ne- bivolol may enhance production of NO in re- sponse to subsequent treatment with LPS and PGN, an observation that may have relevance in clinical septic shock. Groups of female BALB/c mice each containing 12 mice (6-8 weeks old) were injected intraperitoneally with LPS (30 μg/mouse), PGN (100 μg/mouse), nebivolol (0.25 μg/g, 0.35 μg/g, 0.7 μg/g), LPS and nebivolol (0.25 μg/g), LPS and nebivolol (0.35 μg/g), LPS and nebivolol (0.7 μg/g), PGN and nebivolol (0.25 μg/g), PGN and nebivolol (0.35μg/g). One group of mice was injected with saline and an- other served as control. Three mice from each group were bled 1, 3, 6 and 9 hours post-injec- tion, the blood was pooled and the nitrite serum levels, reflecting NO concentration, were de- termined using Greiss reagent. The following results were obtained: 1) Treatment with saline did not induce NO production;2) LPS induced NO production to a maximal limit of 545% at 9 hours as compared to treatment with saline;3) PGN did not induce NO production;4) nebivolol at most doses and periods (7 out of 10 deter- minations) increased NO production over a range of 18-110% as compared to treatment with saline;5) Nebivolol enhanced LPS-induced production of NO by 58% at a dose of 0.7 μg/gm at 9 hours. Management of cataract in keratoconus: early visual outcomes of different treatment modalities

A review of 31 eyes with keratoconus who developed cataract and underwent phacoemulsification. Visual acuities were measured 1 mo postoperatively. Six eyes with a history of good corrected distance visual acuity(CDVA) and a similar refractive and topographic astigmatic axis were implanted with toric intraocular lenses(IOLs). The mean postoperative uncorrected distance visual acuity(UDVA) was 0.2 logMAR with a spherical equivalent(SE): 0.75 D. eleven eyes with a history of good CDVA and different refractive and topographic axis were implanted with monofocal IOL+/-Toric implantable collamer lenses to treat anisometropia and ametropia;mean UDVA was 0.25 logMAR with a mean SE:-0.51 D postoperatively. Six eyes with poor CDVA were first treated with intra-corneal ring segments, followed by phacoemulsification, the mean postoperative UDVA was 0.82 logMAR with an SE: 0.22 D. Eight eyes had advanced ectesia and received combined phacoemulsification and penetrating keratoplasty. Our approach is efficient in addressing ametropia after cataract surgery in keratoconic eyes.

We report a case of metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer, who received prior treatment with docetaxel and was then given cabazitaxel as salvage therapy. The patient was monitored by prostate-specific antigen doubling time and prostate-specific antigen absolute value. The prostate-specific antigen doubling time was found to be a good response predictor in the patient.

A 41-year-old man presented with severe gastric ulceration 3 mo after beginning treatment with atorvastatin 20 mg once daily for hypercholesterolemia. The patient was not taking any ulcerogenic drugs and had no evidence of Helicobacter pylori infection. Proton pump inhibitor therapy was initiated and atorvastatin was replaced by simvastatin with complete resolution of gastrointestinal symptoms. To our knowledge, this is the first report of atorvastatin-induced gastric ulceration,which should be looked for in patients who develop abdominal pain while on this drug.

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most devastating solid tumors, and it remains one of the most difficult to treat. The treatment of metastatic pancreatic cancer (MPC) is systemic, based on chemotherapy or best supportive care, depending on the performance status of the patient. Two chemotherapeutical regimens have produced substantial benefits in the treatment of MPC: gemcitabine in 1997; and FOLFIRIONOX in 2011. FOLFIRINOX improved the natural history of MPC, with overall survival (OS) of 11.1 mo. Nab-paclitaxel associated with gemcitabine is a newly approved regimen for MPC, with a median OS of 8.6 mo. Despite multiple trials, this targeted therapy was not efficient in the treatment of MPC. Many new molecules targeting the proliferation and survival pathways, immune response, oncofetal signaling and the epigenetic changes are currently undergoing phase I and II trials for the treatment of MPC, with many promising results.

Assistive lower limb exoskeleton robot has been developed to help paraplegic patients walk again.A gait planning method of this robot must be able to plan a gait based on gait parameters,which can be changed during the stride according to human intention or walking *** gait is usually planned in cartesian space,which has shortcomings such as singularities that may occur in inverse kinematics equations,and the angular velocity of the joints cannot be entered into the ***,it is vital to have a gait planning method in the joint *** this paper,a minimum-time and minimum-jerk planner is proposed for the robot *** do so,a third-order system is defined,and the cost function is introduced to minimize the jerk of the joints throughout the *** minimum time required is calculated to keep the angular velocity trajectory within the range specified by the motor’s maximum *** conditions of the joints are determined to secure backward balance and fulfill gait ***,the proposed gait planning method is tested by its implementation on the Exoped®exoskeleton.

Maximizing aged photovoltaic array power:a computer modelling study

Photovoltaic(PV)modules age with time for various reasons such as corroded joints and terminals and glass coating defects,and their ageing degrades the PV array *** the help of the PV array numerical model,this paper explores the effects of PV module ageing on the PV array power,and the power gains and costs of rearranging and recabling aged PV modules in a PV *** numerical PV array model is first revised to account for module ageing,rearrangement and recabling,with the relevant equations presented *** updated numerical model is then used to obtain the array powers for seven different PV *** power results are then analysed in view of the attributes of the seven PV array examples.A guiding method to recommend recabling after rearranging aged modules is then proposed,leading to further significant power gains,while eliminating intra-row *** certain conditions are met,it was shown that recabling PV modules after rearranging them may lead to further significant power gains,reaching 57%and 98%in two considered PV array *** gains are possible in other arrays.A cost-benefit analysis weighing annual power gains versus estimated recabling costs is also given for the seven considered PV array examples to guide recabling decisions based on technical and economic *** the considered examples,recabling costs can be recovered inell over the gains reported in the ***,the cost of our static module rearrangement and recabling method outshines the costs of dynamic reconfiguration methods recently published in the literature.
