The dynamic speckle is a non-destructive optical technique that has been used as a tool for the characterization of the biological activity and several studies are conducted to obtain for more information about the correspondence of the observed phenomena and their expressions in the interference images. Analysis in the frequency domain has been considered as powerful alternative, and although there are works using Fourier transform in the frequency analysis of the biospeckle signals, the majority presents the wavelet transform as tool for spectral analysis. In turn, there are still doubts if the Fourier transform is not enough for the analysis of the biospeckle, which would enable the reduction of processing time since an operation is computationally simpler. In this context, the present study aims to compare the constituents’ parts of the speckle signal according to Fourier and wavelet transforms for numerical analysis. The comparative analysis based on the absolute values of the differences technique (AVD) was carried out for performance evaluation of the Fourier and wavelet transforms, in which the speckle signals were decomposed spectrally and subsequently reconstructed with the elimination of specific frequency bands. Results showed that the wavelet transform allowed more information about signals constituents of the dynamic speckle, emphasizing its use instead of the Fourier transform, which in turn was restricted the situations in which the only interest is to know the spectral content of the data.

Background: Liver regeneration is crucial to restore the functional liver mass after liver resection. The aim of this study was to evaluate the early postoperative changes in remnant liver function, volume and liver stiffness after major liver resection and their correlation with postoperative outcomes. Methods: Patients undergoing major liver resection (≥3 segments) between February and November 2018 underwent both functional assessment using technetium-99m mebrofenin hepatobiliary scintigraphy (HBS) and CT-volumetry of the (future) remnant liver on preoperative day 1, the 5th postoperative day, and 4-6 weeks after resection. At the same time points, patients underwent transient elastography (TE) for the assessment of liver stiffness. Severe postoperative complications (Clavien-Dindo ≥ 3A) and mortality were correlated with the functional and volumetric increases of the remnant liver. Liver failure was graded according to the International Study Group of Liver Surgery (ISGLS) criteria. Results: A total of 18 patients were included of whom 10 (56%) had severe complications and one patient (5%) developed liver failure. Function and volume of the remnant liver had increased by the 5th postoperative day from 6.9 (5.4-10.9) to 9.6 (6.7-13.8) %/min/m2, P=0.004 and from 795.5 (538.3-1,037.5) to 1,080.0 (854.0-1,283.3) mL, P<0.001, respectively. After 4-6 weeks, remnant liver volume had further increased [from 1,080.0 (854.0-1,283.3) to 1,222.0 (1,016.0-1,380.5) mL, P=0.035], however, liver function did not show any significant, further increase [from 9.6 (6.7-13.8) to 10.9 (8.8-13.6) %/min/m2, P=0.177]. Liver elasticity of the future remnant liver (FRL) increased [from 10.8 (5.7-18.7) to 17.5 (12.4-22.6) kPa, P=0.018] and gradually recovered after 4-6 weeks to a median of 10.9 (5.7-18.8) kPa (T3 vs. T4, P=0.079). Purpose: Prostate specific antigen levels can be normalized by the prostate volume to give a prostate specific antigen density (PSAd). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can more accurately determine prostate zonal anatomy and prostate volumes compared to transrectal ultrasound, and hence may lead to more accurate PSAd measurements. Methods: Imaging and pathology of men undergoing prostate MRI from April 2007 to May 2009 were reviewed in this retrospective study. 73 patients were included for analysis, of which 45 had prostate cancer and 28 did not have cancer. Total, transitional zone, and peripheral zone values were determined by ultrasound prolate ellipse, MRI prolate ellipse, and MRI segmentation methods. Results: The study population showed an average PSA of 6.3 ng/mL, with the control mean PSA (8.8 ng/mL) being greater than the cancer group (5.3 ng/mL). Transrectal ultrasound underestimated the prostate volume (mean 27.7 mL versus MRI volume of 38.3 mL, p ≤ 0.001). No difference was seen between cancer and control populations using PSAd. PSAd correctly categorized low (Gleason < 7) and high-grade cancers (Gleason ≥ 7) in patients with malignancy. Conclusion: Transrectal ultrasound underestimates prostate volumes and hence is inaccurate in calculating PSAd. MRI more accurately depicts PSAd, however PSAd is unable to differentiate between patients with cancer and benign disease such as BPH or prostatitis.

The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of a new procedure, ultrasound-guided partial plantar fasciotomy with needle for plantar fasciosis. Methods: This study was carried out on 16 patients, 9 men and 7 women, with average age 47.5, diagnosed with plantar fasciosis, who were treated through ultrasound-guided partial plantar fasciotomy using multiple perforations. Clinical assessments and ultrasounds of all patients were carried out before treatment, after a week, then after 1, 3 and 12 months. For the clinical assessment the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and the Foot and Ankle Disability Index (fadi) were used. Results: There was significant progress at 95% (Greenhouse-Geisser p fadi during the study. We had no nerve or other complications: paraesthesia of the entry portal or vascular lesions. Conclusion: Ultrasound- guided partial plantar fasciotomy using multiple perforations is a safe technique, with very satisfactory preliminary results, reducing recovery times and time off work. The technique can be performed in the specialist’s consultation room with local anaesthesia, without the need for stitches and with very fast recovery, thus reducing costs. It can be performed on patients with underlying pathology such as diabetes mild to moderate, vascular insufficiency, heart disease or other comorbidities, so this technique could be an improvement on other open plantar fasciotomy surgical techniques.
