Heavy snow disruptions are common and costly occurrences in the UK,including ***,heavy snow remains an underresearched aspect of disaster risks in *** study critically examined the 2018 heavy snow event in Scotland referred to as the“Beast from the East”(BfE)in order to explore the different sources of information used by the public in preparation for and response to heavy snow *** study also examined the effectiveness of BfE risk communication between authorities and the public and sought to determine if there is a relationship between risk information received and the intention to mitigate *** were collected through a semistructured survey from(n=180)residents of the Annandale and Eskdale region of Dumfries and Galloway,*** analysis shows that public authority information sources were the most sought-after information sources,followed by online and web *** found statistically significant differences between groups(such as age,gender,and mobility/disability)in terms of using risk information *** analysis shows that the relationship between information received and the intention to mitigate risks is not linear but influenced by intervening variables such as work pressures,financial commitment,and stakeholders’*** argue that where full adherence to official risk advice is required,policymakers should carefully consider issues around these three factors.

A simple hand calculation method based on group theory is proposed to predict the near field maps of finite metallic nanoparticles(MnP)of canonical geometries:prism,cube,hexagon,disk,sphere,*** to low order localized surface plasmon resonance *** this article,we report the principles of the group theory approach and demonstrate,through several examples,the general character of the group theory method which can be applied to describe the plasmonic response of particles of finite or infinite symmetry point *** validation is achieved by collection of high-resolution subwavelength near-field maps by photoemission electron microscopy(PEEM)on a representative set of Au colloidal particles exhibiting either finite(hexagon)or infinite(disk,sphere)symmetry point groups.

Biobed is a smart bioremediation system used to treat point-source pesticide *** is the main component of biobeds,and pesticide dissipation is affected by its *** study aimed to compare the effectiveness of compost-based(C)versus peat-moss-based(P)biomixtures of biobeds on tested pesticide *** concentrations(25,50,and 75 mg/kg)of chlorpyrifos,pendimethalin,and thiophanate methyl were added separately and as a mix to both biomixtures C and *** data showed the effect of biomixture type on the dissipation of the tested *** chlorpyrifos,its dissipation rate in biomixture P was more rapid than that in biomixture *** result was confirmed by the mineralization kinetic experiment,since 25%of the initial ^(14)C-chlorpyrifos concentration accumulated in the form ^(14)CO_(2) in biomixture P compared to only 14%in biomixture *** addition,the chlorpyrifos dissipation rate was influenced by the initial concentration when applied individually in biomixture *** contrast,biomixture C was more effective at pendimethalin dissipation than biomixture P,since>76%of pendimethalin was dissipated in biomixture C versus 67%in biomixture P at the same incubation *** thiophanate-methyl,the abilities of both biomixtures C and P were similar and less efficient than those of the other tested *** addition of the three tested pesticides to biomixture C only had a positive effect on both chlorpyrifos and thiophanate-methyl dissipation,while pendimethalin dissipation was similar when applied separately or as a *** activity was stimulated by the addition of separately or mixed pesticides to biomixtures C and P as measured by dehydrogenase activity.

Using an array of coupled microwave resonators arranged in a deformed honeycomb lattice,we experimentally observe the formation of pseudo-Landau levels in the whole crossover from vanishing to large pseudomagnetic field *** result is achieved by utilising an adaptable setup in a geometry that is compatible with the pseudo-Landau levels at all field *** adopted approach enables us to observe the fully formed flat-band pseudo-Landau levels spectrally as sharp peaks in the photonic density of states and image the associated wavefunctions spatially,where we provide clear evidence for a characteristic nodal structure reflecting the previously elusive supersymmetry in the underlying low-energy *** particular,we resolve the full sublattice polarisation of the anomalous 0th pseudo-Landau level,which reveals a deep connection to zigzag edge states in the unstrained case.

Recent discoveries of intrinsic two-dimensional(2D)magnets open up vast opportunities to address fundamental problems in condensed matter physics,giving rise to applications from ultra-compact spintronics to quantum *** ever-growing material landscape of 2D magnets lacks,however,carbon-based systems,prominent in other areas of 2D *** measurements of the Eu/graphene compound-a monolayer of the EuC_(6) stoichiometry-reveal the emergence of 2D ferromagnetism but detailed studies of competing magnetic states are still ***,we employ element-selective X-ray absorption spectroscopy(XAS)and magnetic circular dichroism(XMCD)to establish the magnetic structure of monolayer *** system exhibits the anomalous Hall effect,negative magnetoresistance,and magnetization consistent with a ferromagnetic state but the saturation magnetic moment(about 2.5/%/Eu)is way too low for the half-filled f-shells of Eu^(2+)*** XAS/XMCD studies at the Eu L3 absorption edge probe the EuC6 magnetism in high fields and reveal the nature of the missing magnetic *** results are set against XMCD studies in Eu/silicene and Eu/germanene to establish monolayer EuC6 as a prominent member of the family of Eu-based 2D magnets combining the celebrated graphene properties with a strong magnetism of europium.

As the consumption of fructose and saturated fatty acids(FAs) has greatly increased in western diets and is linked with an increased risk of metabolic syndrome,the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a mod-erate(10 weeks) and a prolonged(30 weeks) high fructose and saturated fatty acid(HFS) diet on plasma FA com-position in *** effects of a few weeks of HFS diet had already been described,but in this paper we tried to es-tablish whether these effects persist or if they are modified after 10 or 30 *** hypothesized that the plasma FA profile would be altered between 10 and 30 weeks of the HFS *** fed with either the HFS or a standard diet were tested after 10 weeks and again after 30 *** 10 weeks of feeding,HFS-fed rats developed the metabolic syndrome,as manifested by an increase in fasting insulinemia,total cholesterol and triglyceride levels,as well as by impaired glucose ***,the plasma FA profile of the HFS group showed higher proportions of monounsaturated FAs like palmitoleic acid [16:1(n-7)] and oleic acid [18:1(n-9)],whereas the proportions of some polyunsaturated n-6 FAs,such as linoleic acid [18:2(n-6)] and arachidonic acid [20:4(n-6)],were lower than those in the control *** 30 weeks of the HFS diet,we observed changes mainly in the levels of 16:1(n-7)(decreased) and 20:4(n-6)(increased).Together,our results suggest that an HFS diet could lead to an adaptive response of the plasma FA profile over time,in association with the development of the metabolic syndrome.

A novel microporous two-dimensional(2D)ni-based phosphonate metal-organic framework(MOF;denoted as IEF-13)has been successfully synthesized by a simple and green hydrothermal method and fully characterized using a combination of experimental and computational *** resolution by single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that IEF-13 crystallizes in the triclinic space group Pi having bi-octahedra nickel nodes and a photo/electroactive tritopic phosphonate ***,this material exhibits coordinatively unsaturated nickel(II)sites,free-P0_(3)H_(2)and-P0_(3)H acidic groups,a C0_(2)accessible microporosity,and an exceptional thermal and chemical ***,its in-deep optoelectronic characterization evidences a photoresponse suitable for *** this sense,the photocatalytic activity for challenging H_(2)generation and overall water splitting in absence of any co-catalyst using UV-Vis irradiation and simulated sunlight has been evaluated,constituting the first report for a phosphonate-MOF ***-13 is able to produce up to 2,200 fimol of H_(2)per gram using methanol as sacrificial agent,exhibiting stability,maintaining its crystal structure and allowing its *** more,170μmol of H_(2)per gram were produced using IEF-13 as photocatalyst in the absence of any co-catalyst for the overall water splitting,being this reaction limited by the 0_(2)*** present work opens new avenues for further optimization of the photocatalytic activity in this type of multifunctional materials.

Semiconductor devices are strong competitors in the race for the development of quantum computational *** this work,we interface two semiconductor building blocks of different dimensionalities with complementary properties:(1)a quantum dot hosting a single exciton and acting as a nearly ideal single-photon emitter and(2)a quantum well in a 2D microcavity sustaining polaritons,which are known for their strong interactions and unique hydrodynamic properties,including ultrafast real-time monitoring of their propagation and phase *** the present experiment,we can thus observe how the injected single particles propagate and evolve inside the microcavity,giving rise to hydrodynamic features typical of macroscopic systems despite their genuine intrinsic quantum *** the presence of a structural defect,we observe the celebrated quantum interference of a single particle that produces fringes reminiscent of wave *** this behavior could be theoretically expected,our imaging of such an interference pattern,together with a measurement of antibunching,constitutes the first demonstration of spatial mapping of the self-interference of a single quantum particle impinging on an obstacle.
