Soil organic matter (SOM) is a complex heterogeneous mixture formed through decomposition and organo-mineral interactions, and characterization of its composition and biogeochemical stability is challenging. From this perspective, Rock-Eval® is a rapid and efficient thermal analytical method that combines the quantitative and qualitative information of SOM, including several parameters related to thermal stability. This approach has already been used to monitor changes in organic matter (OM) properties at the landscape, cropland, and soil profile scales. This study was aimed to assess the stability of SOM pools by characterizing the grain size fractions from forest litters and topsoils using Rock-Eval® thermal analysis. Litter (organic) and topsoil samples were collected from a beech forest in Normandy (France), whose management in the last 200 years has been documented. Fractionation by wet sieving was used to separate large debris (> 2 000 μm) and coarse (200–2 000 μm) and fine particulate OM (POM) (50–200 μm) in the organic samples as well as coarse (200–2 000 μm), medium (50–200 μm), and fine (< 50 μm) fractions of the topsoil samples. Rock-Eval® was able to provide thermal parameters sensitive enough to study fine-scale soil processes. In the organic layers, quantitative and qualitative changes were explained by the progressive decomposition of labile organic compounds from plant debris to the finest organic particles. Meanwhile, the grain size fractions of topsoils presented different characteristics. The coarse organo-mineral fractions showed higher C contents, albeit with a different composition, higher thermal stability, and greater decomposition degree than the plant debris forming the organic layer. These results are consistent with those of previous studies that microbial activity is more effective in this fraction. Cholesterol, being the starting point of steroid hormone synthesis, is a long known modulator of both female and male reproductive physiology especially at the level of the gonads and the impact cholesterol has on gametogenesis. Less is known about the effects cholesterol homeostasis may have on postgonadic reproductive functions. Lately, several data have been reported showing how imbalanced cholesterol levels may particularly affect the post-testicular events of sperm maturation that lead to fully fertile male gametes. This review will focus on that aspect and essentially centers on how cholesterol is important for the physiology of the mammalian epididymis and spermatozoa.

High Capacity Spectrum Sensing Framework Based on Relay Cooperation

In order to reduce interference to primary users and provide better performance of detection probability and channel capacity in multi-user cooperative spectrum sensing networks, a high capacity spectrum sensing framework is proposed based on the analysis of amplification factors on the performance of detection probability and channel capacity. Thanks to the energy concentration property of chirp signals in the Fractional Fourier Transform(Fr FT) domain, sinusoidal signal and different chirp signals are utilized for primary user and cognitive users, respectively. Hence, spectrum sensing and signal transmission can be performed simultaneously in our proposed framework. Simulation results show that compared with the previous relay-based framework, the modified cooperative spectrum sensing framework can improve the detection probability significantly, and the channel capacity can also be improved. Moreover, the amplification factor can be used to realize the tradeoff between detection probability and channel capacity in our proposed framework.

The biosorption of Cr（VI） ions by dried biomass obtained from a chromium-resistant bacterium

The biosorption potential of many different kinds of biomaterials has been widely studied. However, there is little data on the biosorption mechanism of Cr（VI） by dried biomass. So the bio-removal of Cr（VI） ions from aqueous solutions was investigated using dried biomass from a chromium-resistant bacterium. The bacterium was isolated from dewatered sludge samples that were obtained from a sewage treatment plant. Equilibrium and kinetic experiments were performed at different metal concentra- tions, pH values, and biosorbents dosages. The biomass was characterized using scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The functional groups in the Bacillus cereus biomass which may play a role in the biosorption process were identified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The biosorption process was found to be highly pH dependent and the optimum pH for the adsorption of Cr（VI） was 2.0：k0.3 at 30-4-2 ℃. The experimental data fit well with Langmuir and Freundlich models as well as a pseudo-second order kinetic model. The mechanism for the biosorption was also studied by fitting the kinetic data with an intra-particle diffusion model and a Boyd plot. External mass transfer was found to be the rate-determining step for the adsorption process. Biosorption could be an alternative mechanism besides bio-oxidation and bio-reduction for the bioremediation of heavy metals.

Sampling Geostatistical Structures in Extremal Framework

Geostatistics of extreme values makes it possible to model the asymptotic behavior of random phenomena that depend on time or space. In this paper, we propose new models of the extremal coefficient of a stationary random field where the cumulative distribution is associated with a multivariate copula. More precisely, some models of extensions of the extremogram and these derivatives are built in a spatial framework. Moreover, both these two geostatistical tools are modeled using the extremal variogram which characterizes the asymptotic stochastic behavior of the phenomena.

Observation of supersymmetric pseudo-Landau levels in strained microwave graphene

Using an array of coupled microwave resonators arranged in a deformed honeycomb lattice,we experimentally observe the formation of pseudo-Landau levels in the whole crossover from vanishing to large pseudomagnetic field *** result is achieved by utilising an adaptable setup in a geometry that is compatible with the pseudo-Landau levels at all field *** adopted approach enables us to observe the fully formed flat-band pseudo-Landau levels spectrally as sharp peaks in the photonic density of states and image the associated wavefunctions spatially,where we provide clear evidence for a characteristic nodal structure reflecting the previously elusive supersymmetry in the underlying low-energy *** particular,we resolve the full sublattice polarisation of the anomalous 0th pseudo-Landau level,which reveals a deep connection to zigzag edge states in the unstrained case.
