Influence of Tectonics and Morphometric Features on the Landslide Distribution: A Case Study from the Mesima Basin (Calabria, South Italy)

Identifying the instability areas provides useful information about the recognition of the vulnerable zones and,thus,helps to potentially decrease the harm to the infrastructure and the hazard conditions in inhabited areas.In this regard,morphometric parameters and tectonic setting are widely employed in mapping,modelling and understanding of instability processes.The present study is aimed to analyse the combined effects of slope morphometry(slope gradient,slope curvature,local relief),of lithology,of drainage density and of tectonic setting on the distribution of landslides.The study area is located in the Mesima Basin that lies in the central part of the Calabria region(southern Italy).The morphometric analysis was carried out by geographic information system(GIS)techniques,whereas the geomorphic attributes were computed by a digital elevation model(DEM).The recognized landslides and faults were digitized and stored in a GIS geo-database that allowed the construction of relative density maps.A total of 1991 landslides and 231 tectonic lineaments were recognized and mapped.The distribution of the collected data suggests that the occurrence of landslides is not random.Indeed,the research highlights as the lithology,the fault density,the slope gradient and the local relief play an important role in determining the landslide occurrence.The used approach is aimed to reinforce the knowledge about the validity of the application of morphometric analysis to the landslide susceptibility.The Mesima Basin is a poorly studied area of the Calabria from a geomorphological viewpoint.Indeed,previous researches focused mainly on geological and on tectonic aspects,as well as on instability phenomena in the Mesima surroundings.Thus,this paper takes a step forward with respect to previous studies because it augments the knowledge about the relationship between faults,morphometric features and the occurrence of landslide.

BACKGROUND In the field of minimally invasive surgery(MIS)for the treatment of hallux valgus(HV),different techniques have begun to emerge in the literature concerning the distal osteotomy of the first metatarsal bone,the synthesis or not of the metatarsal head,the possible association with lateral soft tissues release(LSTR)and osteotomy of the base of the first phalanx.AIM To evaluate the role of LSTR on percutaneous HV correction,evaluating functional and radiographical results.METHODS From January 2012 to May 2016 a total of 396 patients with mild to moderate symptomatic HV treated with the MIS technique were included in this retrospective study.The technique provides no internal fixation(WOS).Patients were divided into the LSTR group and no LSTR group(LSTR N).This surgical procedure(LSTR)was reserved for insufficient HV angle(HVA)correction during fluoroscopic control.Patients were evaluated at each follow-up by two other authors after appropriate training by senior authors(first practitioners).Clinical evaluation was performed before surgery,6 mo after surgery,and 48 mo follow-up.American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society(AOFAS)and visual analog scale(VAS)score was used to evaluate pain and function,and complications were recorded.In addition,the incidence of relapses and the degree of joint range of motion(ROM)with the association with the LSTR(capsule,adductor tendon,phalanx-sesamoid ligament,and the deep transverse metatarsal ligament)were evaluated.Radiological parameters included HVA and intermetatarsal angle(IMA).Patient satisfaction was assessed.Student t-test and Fisher exact test were used to assess statistical analysis.RESULTS From our study it is clear that no differences in term of HVA,VAS,IMA correction,rate of complications,and AOFAS score were found between groups,while a significant improvement of the same variables was found in each group between pre and postoperative values.A significant improvement in ROM at 6 mo(P=0.018)and 48 mo(P=0.02)of follow-up was found in LSTR N group.Complication

Near Real Time(minutes or hours) radar imaging of ground targets located anywhere on an hemisphere, with or without interferometric coherence with previous passes, can be obtained with different solutions that are considered here. Geosynchronous systems, from the one proposed in 1978 by Tomiyasu to telecom satellite compatible solutions, and Low, Medium or Geosynchronous Earth Orbit constellations are discussed.Their benefits, problems, and sizes are briefly summarized, and a comparative table is presented. If interferometric coherence is requested, continuous imaging is obtained only if a very wide geostationary aperture is progressively scanned, eventually using a MIMO(Multiple Input Multiple Output) combination of several slow librating small satellites. Instead, fast librating, strip mapping, large geosynchronous satellites do provide high resolution imaging, but interferometry(and thus coherent change detection) is achievable only after a minimum delay of 12 h, i.e., when the target comes in sight without need to squint the antenna. Hence, both complex and simple systems reach full resolution interferometric imaging and thus coherent change detection capability only after 12 h.

Ambulatory diastolic blood pressure:a marker of comorbidity in elderly fit hypertensive individuals?

BACKGROUND Masked diastolic hypotension is a new blood pressure(BP)pattern detected by ambulatory blood pressure monitoring(ABPM)in elderly hypertensives.The aim of this study was to relate ABPM and comorbidity in a cohort of fit elderly subjects attending an outpatient hypertension clinic.METHODS Comorbidity was assessed by Charlson comorbidity index(CCI)and CHA_(2)DS_(2)VASc score.All subjects evaluated with ABPM were aged≥65 years.CCI and CHA_(2)DS_(2)VASc score were calculated.Diastolic hypotension was defined as mean am-bulatory diastolic BP<65 mmHg and logistic regression analysis was carried out in order to detect and independent relationship between comorbidity burden and night-time diastolic BP<65 mmHg.RESULTS We studied 174 hypertensive elderly patients aged 72.1±5.2 years,men were 93(53.4%).Mean CCI was 0.91±1.14 and mean CHA_(2)DS_(2)VASc score of 2.68±1.22.Subjects with night-time mean diastolic values<65 mmHg were higher in females[54.7%vs.45.3%,P=0.048;odds ratio(OR)=1.914,95%CI:1.047−3.500].Logistic regression analysis showed that only CHA_(2)DS_(2)-VASc score was independently associated with night-time mean diastolic values<65 mmHg(OR=1.518,95%CI:1.161−1.985;P=0.002),but CCI was not.CONCLUSIONS ABPM and comorbidity evaluation appear associated in elderly fit subjects with masked ***-orbid women appear to have higher risk for low ambulatory BP.

Alzheimer’s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive cognitive impairment and neuropathology. Recent preclinical and epidemiological studies proposed statins as a possible therapeutic drug for Alzheimer’s disease, but the exact mechanisms of action are still unknown. Biliverdin reductase-A is a pleiotropic enzyme involved in cellular stress responses. It not only transforms biliverdin-IX alpha into the antioxidant bilirubin-IX alpha but its serine/threonine/ tyrosine kinase activity is able to modulate cell signaling networks. We previously reported the beneficial effects of atorvastatin treatment on biliverdin reductase-A and heme oxygenase-1 in the brains of a well characterized pre-clinical model of Alzheimer’s disease, aged beagles, together with observed improvement in cognition. Here we extend our knowledge of the effects of atorvastatin on inducible nitric oxide synthase in parietal cortex, cerebellum and liver of the same animals. We demonstrated that atorvastatin treatment （80 mg/day for 14.5 months） to aged beagles selectively increased inducible nitric oxide synthase in the parietal cortex but not in the cerebellum. In contrast, inducible nitric oxide synthase protein levels were significantly decreased in the liver. Significant positive correlations were found between biliverdin reductase-A and inducible nitric oxide synthase as well as heme oxygenase-1 protein levels in the parietal cortex. The opposite was observed in the liver. Inducible nitric oxide synthase up-regulation in the parietal cortex was positively associated with improved biliverdin reductase-A functions, whereas the oxidative-induced impairment of biliverdin reductase-A in the liver negatively affected inducible nitric oxide synthase expression, thus suggesting a role for biliverdin reductase-A in atorvastatin-dependent inducible nitric oxide synthase changes. BACKGROUND Surgical treatment of complex fractures of the distal femur in the elderly is controversial.Osteoporosis and pre-existent osteoarthritis are common comorbidities in the elderly which add to the need for early walking and rapid restoration of function and also pose significant obstacles to achievement of satisfactory results with standard fixation techniques.Recently,several authors have suggested that primary arthroplasty could be a viable alternative option to standard fixation techniques in selected patients with complex distal femur fractures.AIM To present our experience with 11 cases of distal femur fractures treated with knee arthroplasty and large femoral resection in a population of patients over the age of 85.METHODS Data from 11 consecutive patients(10 females,1 male)presenting with acute intra-articular supracondylar or intercondylar distal femur fractures and with pre-existent primary osteoarthritis who were treated with primary knee arthroplasty were recorded.We collected standard demographic data,comorbidities and patient reported outcomes including Visual Analogical Scale(VAS),Oxford Knee Score(OKS)and Barthel’s Index.Post-operative joint range of motion(ROM)and standard radiographic data were also collected.RESULTS At a mean follow-up of 23.2 mo,all of the implants were well-positioned and osteointegrated.Furthermore,all the patients were alive and walking either independently or with walking aids.There was a marked improvement in pain(VAS 4.5 postop vs 1.9 at the last follow-up),OKS score(29.5 postop vs 36.81 at the last follow-up),ROM(96.2°postop vs 102°at the last follow-up)and restoration of pre-injury ambulatory status(average Barthel Index 77.3).The radiographic evaluations showed good restoration of the articular geometry.No deaths and no complications were recorded.CONCLUSION In conclusion,we believe that knee megaprosthesis in the case of complex fractures of the distal femur is a valid surgical choice.This is particularly true in elderly patients with severe osteoporosis and p

Cell competition is now a well-established quality control strategy to optimize cell and tissue fitness in multicellular organisms.While pursuing this goal,it is also effective in selecting against altered/defective cells with putative(pre)-neoplastic potential,thereby edging the risk of cancer development.The flip side of the coin is that the molecular machinery driving cell competition can also be co-opted by neoplastic cell populations to expand unchecked,outside the boundaries of tissue homeostatic control.This review will focus on information that begins to emerge regarding the role of cell competition in liver physiology and pathology.Liver repopulation by normal transplanted hepatocytes is an interesting field of investigation in this regard.The biological coordinates of this process share many features suggesting that cell competition is a driving force for the clearance of endogenous damaged hepatocytes by normal donor-derived cells,as previously proposed.Intriguing analogies between liver repopulation and carcinogenesis will be briefly discussed and the potential dual role of cell competition,as a barrier or a spur to neoplastic development,will be considered.Cell competition is in essence a cooperative strategy organized at tissue level.One facet of such cooperative attitude is expressed in the elimination of altered cells which may represent a threat to the organismal community.On the other hand,the society of cells can be disrupted by the emergence of selfish clones,exploiting the molecular bar codes of cell competition,thereby paving their way to uncontrolled growth.

Compact Differential Evolution Light: High Performance Despite Limited Memory Requirement and Modest Computational Overhead

Compact algorithms are Estimation of Distribution Algorithms which mimic the behavior of population-based algorithms by means of a probabilistic representation of the population of candidate solutions. These algorithms have a similar behaviour with respect to population-based algorithms but require a much smaller memory. This feature is crucially important in some engineering applications, especially in robotics. A high performance compact algorithm is the compact Differential Evolution （cDE） algorithm. This paper proposes a novel implementation of cDE, namely compact Differential Evolution light （cDElight）, to address not only the memory saving necessities but also real-time requirements, cDElight employs two novel algorithmic modifications for employing a smaller computational overhead without a performance loss, with respect to cDE. Numerical results, carried out on a broad set of test problems, show that cDElight, despite its minimal hardware requirements, does not deteriorate the performance of cDE and thus is competitive with other memory saving and population-based algorithms. An application in the field of mobile robotics highlights the usability and advantages of the proposed approach.

Inspired by the problem of biofilm growth,we numerically investigate clustering in a two-dimensional suspension of active(Janus)particles of finite size confined in a circular cavity.Their dynamics is regulated by a non-reciprocal mechanism that causes them to switch from active to passive above a certain threshold of the perceived near-neighbor density(quorum sensing).A variety of cluster phases,i.e.,glassy,solid(hexatic)and liquid,are observed,depending on the particle dynamics at the boundary,the quorum sensing range,and the level of noise.
