Nosocomial infections affect implanted medical devices and greatly challenge their functional outcomes,becoming sometimes life threatening for the ***,aggressive antibiotic therapies are administered,which often require the use of last-resort drugs,if the infection is caused by multi-drug-resistant *** the risk of bacterial contamination of medical devices in the hospitals has thus become an emerging *** routes to control these infections are based on materials provided with intrinsic bactericidal properties(i.e.,chemical action)and on the design of surface coatings able to limit bacteria adhesion and fouling phenomena(i.e.,physical action),thus preventing bacterial biofilm ***,we report the development and validation of coatings made of layer-by-layer deposition of electrospun poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoro ethylene)P(VDF-TrFE)fibers with controlled orientations,which ultimately gave rise to antifouling *** obtained 10-layer surface morphology with 90°orientation fibers was able to efficiently prevent the adhesion of bacteria,by establishing a superhydrophobic-like behavior compatible with the Cassie-Baxter ***,the results highlighted that surface wettability and bacteria adhesion could be controlled using fibers with diameter comparable to bacteria size(i.e.,achievable via electrospinning process),by tuning the intra-fiber spacing,with relevant implications in the future design of biomedical surface coatings.

Evaluation of a hepatic biomarker of nutritional imbalance in juvenile red drum(Sciaenops ocellatus) fed 60% soybean meal-based diets using NMR-based metabolomics

A 12-week feeding trial with juvenile red drum(Sciaenops ocellatus) fed high-soybean meal(SBM) diets was conducted to investigate a putative biomarker of nutritional imbalance, N-formimino-l-glutamate(FiGlU). Three fishmeal-free, 60% SBM pelleted diets(named B12, Fol, and Met, respectively) were tested to evaluate the effects on growth performance and tissue metabolite profiles of supplementation of vitamin B12(0.012 mg/kg), folate(10 mg/kg), methionine(1 g/kg) respectively, above basal supplementation levels. A fourth SBM-based diet(named B12/Fol/Met) was formulated with a combination of B12, folate, and methionine to attain the above-mentioned target concentrations. A fifth 60% SBM diet(named FWS) with methionine supplementation(1 g/kg above basal supplementation levels), enriched with taurine, lysine and threonine as well as minerals, was also tested. This diet contained formulation targets and additives which have allowed for replacing fishmeal with plant proteins in rainbow trout feeds. Control diets included a fishmeal-based diet(named FM), an unsupplemented basal 60% SBM diet(named SBM60), and a “natural” diet(named N) made up of equal parts of fish(cigar minnows), squid and shrimp as a positive reference for growth performance. Formulated feeds contained approximately 37% total crude protein, approximately 14% total crude lipid and were energetically balanced. Standard growth performance metrics were measured, and tissues(liver, muscle) were collected at week 12 to evaluate diet-induced metabolic changes using nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)-based *** results show that the FWS diet outperformed all other SBM diets and the FM diet under all performance metrics(PiGlU was not detected in fish fed the N diet but was detected in those fed the SBM diets and the FM diet. BACKGROUND Although the benefits of exercise for kidney transplant recipients(KTRs)have been widely demonstrated,these patients experience several barriers in undertaking a structured exercise program in hospital and non-hospital *** To compare the effects of a supervised moderate-intensity gym-based intervention with a home-based low-intensity walking program on exercise capacity in *** KTRs were asked to choose between two six-month *** first group performed a low-intensity interval walking intervention at home-based exercise intervention (HBex). The second group performed a supervised training program at an adapted physical activitygym (Sgym), including aerobic and resistance training. The outcomes, collected at baseline and at the end of theprograms, included the 6-minute walking test, the peak oxygen consumption (VO_(2)peak) during a treadmill test,the 5-time sit-to-stand test, and blood *** patients agreed to participate and self-selected into the HBex (n = 9) and Sgym (n = 8) groups. Twopatients in the Sgym group dropped out because of familial problems. At baseline, patients in the HBex group weresignificantly older and had lower walking distance, VO_(2)peak, and lower limb strength. Primary outcome changeswere significantly greater in the HBex group than in the Sgym group (52 ± 23 m vs 8 ± 34;P = 0.005). No othersignificant differences between groups were observed. Both groups improved most of the outcomes in the withingroupcomparisons, with significant variations in VO_(2) ***-month moderate-intensity supervised or low-intensity home-based training programs effectively improvedexercise capacity in KTRs. Gym-based programs combine aerobic and resistance training;however, in-homewalking may be proposed for frail KTRs.

Although multiple options for the treatment of liver tumors have often been described in the past, including liver resection, radiofrequency ablation with or without hepatic pump insertion, laparoscopic liver resection and the use of chemotherapy, the potential of immunotherapy and gene manipulation is still largely *** therapy by gene manipulation is based on the interaction between virus-based gene delivery systems and dendritic cells. Markers of systemic inflammation and colorectal adenoma risk: Meta-analysis of observational studies

To perform a meta-analysis of observational studies on inflammatory markers levels and occurrence of colorectal *** and EMBASE databases were searched until March 2016 for the articles reporting on the circulating levels of inflammatory markers, including: C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (il-6), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and risk of colorectal adenoma. Random-effects models were used to calculate summary odds ratios (ORs) with 95%Cis for the highest vs lowest category of exposure. Heterogeneity was assessed by using the Q test and i2 statistic. Subgroup analyses were also performed to test for potential source of *** total of 14 case-control studies were included. Ten studies on CRP including a total of 3350 cases and 4168 controls showed non-significant summary (OR = 1.23, 95%Ci: 0.98-1.54; i2 = 54%, Pheterogeneity = 0.01) in the general analysis, but significant increased odds when considering only advanced adenoma (OR = 1.59, 95%Ci: 1.09-2.32; i2 = 44%, Pheterogeneity = 0.15). Subgroup and stratified analyses revealed a potential influence of smoking status and aspirin use on the association between CRP levels and colorectal adenoma. Five studies examined the association between circulating levels of TNF-α and colorectal adenoma risk, including a total of 1,568 cases and 2,832 controls. The summary OR for the highest vs the lowest category of exposure was 1.00 (95%Ci: 0.77-1.29). The relationship between circulating il-6 levels and colorectal adenoma risk was investigated in 7 studies including a total of 1936 cases and 3611 controls. The summary OR for the highest vs the lowest category of exposure was 1.19 (95%Ci: 0.92-1.55).CONClUSiONSummary of current evidence suggests a positive association of CRP levels and advanced colorectal adenoma risk. The role of potential confounding factors should be further evaluated.

Heterogeneity of endoscopy negative heartburn:Epidemiology and natural history

it has now become clear that only about 40% or less of patients with heartburn and/or regurgitation have esophagitis, and that the majority of them lack visible distal esophageal mucosa breaks. These subjects are referred to as non-erosive gastroesophageal reflux disease (NERD) patients. it has been estimated that in the Western world at least one tenth of the general population has at least weekly heartburn. This proportion seems to be lower in Asia, while prevalence is rapidly increasing. Although it would be extremely useful to have prospective information regarding the fate of such patients, the natural history of NERD is largely unknown, and very few studies in the literature have addressed this issue. These studies are for the greater part old, not well conducted, and suffer from methodological drawbacks including ill-defined entry criteria. However, a review of these studies indicates that a consistent minority of NERD patients may develop erosive disease at an approximate rate of about 10% per year.

Neglectella glomerata ***.,a new species and implications for the systematics of the genus Neglectella(Oocystaceae,Trebouxiophyceae,Chlorophyta)

The genus Neglectella Vodenicarov&Benderliev has a morphology similar to the well-known genus Oocystis,except for the numerous chloroplasts stacked in the surface layer of the *** subsequently experienced complex taxonomy changes with members being transferred in and out,and five species are now *** this study,a new alga with morphology corresponding to this genus was collected in China and successfully cultured in *** observations in light microscopy and transmission electronic microscopy(TEM)and phylogenetic analyses revealed that it is a new species,described here as Neglectella glomerata *** differed from other Neglectella species due to a morphological difference in its unique mucilaginous colony with a large number of cells,multiple pyrenoids in each chloroplast,smaller cell size,and more elongated cell *** analyses placed this alga in the subfamily Eremosphaeroideae of the family Oocystaceae and showed its close relationship with Neglectella *** morphological comparisons combined with phylogenetic results revealed three different morphological types in *** new type represented by our new species may represent a transitional morphology in intermediate taxonomic position between the other two *** diversity of morphological types in Neglectella suggests that further unknown species of this genus are likely to be discovered in the *** collections and DNA sequence data will be needed in the future for this genus.

Efficient fully laser-patterned flexible perovskite modules and solar cells based on low-temperature solution-processed SnO2/mesoporous-TiO2 electron transport layers

Efficient flexible perovskite solar cells and modules were developed using a combination of SnO2 and mesoporous-TiO2 as a fully solution-processed electron transport layer （ETl）. Cells using such ETls delivered a maximum power conversion efficiency （PCE） of 14.8%, which was 30% higher than the PCE of cells with only SnO2 as the ETl. The presence of a mesoporous TiO2 scaffold layer over SnO2 led to higher rectification ratios, lower series resistances, and higher shunt resistances. The cells were also evaluated under 200 and 400 lx artificial indoor illumination and found to deliver maximum power densities of 9.77 μW/cm^2 （estimated PCE of 12.8%） and 19.2 μW/cm^2 （estimated PCE of 13.3%）, respectively, representing the highest values among flexible photovoltaic technologies reported so far. Furthermore, for the first time, a fully laser-patterned flexible perovskite module was fabricated using a complete three-step laser scribing procedure （P1, P2, P3） with a PCE of 8.8% over an active area of 12 cm^2 under an illumination of 1 sun.
