Correlation between Intestinal Health and Coccidiosis Prevalence in Broilers during Different Seasons of the Year in Brazil from 2012 to 2018

Coccidiosis is a disease caused by intracellular protozoan parasites, specifically belonging to the genus Eimeria. These parasites target the gastrointestinal tract in different types of hosts, causing sores in the intestinal lining. The presence of these lesions reduces the animal’s ability to digest and absorb nutrients, significantly impacting their overall performance. The current study aimed to explore the potential correlation between seasonal variations and the incidence of Eimeria spp-induced lesions in broiler chickens’ gastrointestinal tracts in Brazil from 2012 to 2018. A total of 8,607 broiler chickens, aged 14 to 42 days, were sampled from 103 poultry integrated companies in Brazil to conduct intestinal health examinations. The sampling process involved selecting 3 to 6 chickens from each poultry house for examination. The assessment included various abnormalities such as shedding of intestinal cells and excessive fluid and mucus presence, thickening and tension of the intestines, food movement, roughened mucosal surface resembling a Turkish towel in the small intestine, tissue death, duodenal inflammation, intestinal inflammation, gizzard erosion, presence of worms and bedding material, and ingestion of mealworms. During the seasons, winter exhibited the highest average occurrence of Eimeria maxima microorganisms at 52.83%, with E. acervulina following closely at 26.42% in second place. In spring, E. maxima had an occurrence of 11.31%, while in fall, E. tenella had the lowest occurrence at 6.74%. When analyzing the seasonal occurrence of Eimeria, it was observed that E. maxima micro was more common during winter compared to summer (P = 0.0491). However, no discernible variation was observed in the occurrence of the remaining species across different seasons. Research findings suggest that subclinical coccidiosis is most prevalent during the winter season in Brazil. Likewise, clinical disease caused by E. acervulina is also prevalent during this time. I

Surgical Outcomes of a Small Incision Limbus-Based Revision for Failed Trabeculectomies

Background: Trabeculectomy does not always work as long as necessary to control glaucoma. This study aimed to describe the initial outcomes of a surgical technique for restoring failed trabeculectomies. Methods: We reviewed patients with failed trabeculectomy with mitomycin (MMC) who underwent limbus-based revision. After the dissection of the subconjunctival area through a smaller incision (3 mm), MMC was applied and episcleral fibrosis was excised. Each criterion was classified as complete or qualified for glaucoma medication. Results: Nineteen patients (19 eyes) were included in this study. The mean follow-up was 9.4 ± 8.6 months. At the last follow-up visit, the mean intraocular pressure was reduced from 20.9 ± 8.4 (range, 12 - 44 mmHg) to 11.6 ± 3.6 mm Hg (range, 6 - 19 mmHg) (p Conclusions: Our initial results suggest that limbus-based revision is an effective alternative to restoring failed trabeculectomies with minor postoperative complications.

The translation of the genotype into phenotype, represented for example by the expression of genes encod- ing enzymes required for the biosynthesis of phytochemicals that are important for interaction of plants with the environment, is largely carried out by transcription factors （TFs） that recognize specific cis-regulatory elements in the genes that they control. TFs and their target genes are organized in gene regulatory net- works （GRNs）, and thus uncovering GRN architecture presents an important biological challenge necessary to explain gene regulation. Linking TFs to the genes they control, central to understanding GRNs, can be car- ried out using gene- or TF-centered approaches. In this study, we employed a gene-centered approach uti- lizing the yeast one-hybrid assay to generate a network of protein-DNA interactions that participate in the transcriptional control of genes involved in the biosynthesis of maize phenolic compounds including gen- eral phenylpropanoids, lignins, and flavonoids. We identified 1100 protein-DNA interactions involving 54 phenolic gene promoters and 568 TFs. A set of 11 TFs recognized 10 or more promoters, suggesting a role in coordinating pathway gene expression. The integration of the gene-centered network with informa- tion derived from TF-centered approaches provides a foundation for a phenolics GRN characterized by in- terlaced feed-forward loops that link developmental regulators with biosynthetic genes.

Relationship between Physical Activity Level, Hepatic Steatosis Presence, Metabolic Syndrome and the Risk of Developing Type 2 Diabetes in Men

Cardiovascular disease, cancer, respiratory and metabolic disease represent 63% of all deaths worldwide and are considered the major causes of morbidity and mortality. Physical inactivity is considered a case of public health, and other behavioral and metabolic risk factors, according to WHO (2011), such as smoking, increased blood pressure, increased blood glucose, hypercholesterolemia, overweight and obesity. The Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is the most prevalent liver disease in adults, and can progress and be characterized as hepatic steatosis (HS) which is derived from the accumulation of lipids in hepatocytes, and histopathologic condition is more than 5% of the weight of liver. So, the purpose of this study is to identify the relationship between the physical activity level and the hepatic steatosis presence, metabolic syndrome and the risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus in men. We evaluated retrospectively medical records of 1399 men (40.7 ± 8.18 years old) who participated in the protocol of Preventive Health Check-up at Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein from January to October 2011. According to the results, it is concluded that there is a positive association between low physical activity level and the presence of Hepatic steatosis. The results further demonstrate that, despite the high BMI, blood levels of the subjects remained unchanged. Even without a positive association between these variables, the results showed a high risk behavior for the development of diabetes mellitus type 2.

Spinal cord injury can lead to important functional, psychological and social sequelae. Despite the progress in medicine and greater understanding of the pathophysiological events associated with a traumatic spinal cord injury, spinal cord injury is still associated with a high morbidity and mortality. The involvement of the autonomic nervous system has implications in acute and chronic stages of the injured spinal cord patients. The most frequent cardiovascular complications in the acute phase of the traumatic spinal lesions are bradyarrhythmia, hypotension, increased vasovagal reflexes, ventricular and supraventricular ectopic beats, venous stasis, and vasodilation. In the chronic phase, we find orthostatic hypotension, alteration of the arterial pressure and the regulation of the body temperature as well as alteration of the blood volume. The knowledge of the cardiovascular alterations is of vital importance for the management and rehabilitation of the patients with spinal cord injury. In this article, we present a critical review of medical literature.

Infestation of Diatraea saccharalis(Fabr.)during Five Consecutive Cycles of Sugarcane Crop Succeeding Leguminous Crops

The area cultivated with sugarcane in Brazil is expanding, and increasingly using legumes cover crop in new deployed areas and in those which were reformed. Long-term trials were carried out in Piracicaba, Sao Paulo, Brazil, to evaluate the effect of leguminous green manure on the natural infestation of Diatraea saccharalis (Fabr.) during five cropping cycles of sugarcane “IAC 87-3396”. This study was carried out from October 1999 to October 2005 in Piracicaba, Sao Paulo, Brazil, at coordinates 22°42''S and 47°38''W, 560 m above sea level, in soil classified as Typic Paleudult. Green manure crops were assigned to five treatments: peanuts (Arachis hypogaea L.) (cultivar “IAC-Tatu” and “IAC-Caiapó”), sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea L.) (cultivar “IAC 1”) and velvet-bean [Mucuna aterrima (Piper & Tracy) Holland] (cultivar “common”). A treatment without any green manure or weed was used as the control. The previous sugarcane crop was destroyed and the soil was prepared in a conventional way (using plow and harrow) before the leguminous crops were sowed. Thirty days after the sowing, weeds were removed and, 120 days later, the crops were cut and its biomass was deposited on the soil surface without incorporation. Experimental plots comprised five rows of sugarcane, each one measuring 10 m long and spaced 1.40 m apart. The sugarcane was harvested 18 months after biomass deposit, on October 25th, 2001 and its stalks were collected at intervals of approximately 12 months in: 07/09/2002, 08/01/2003, 11/07/2004 and 10/06/2005. At harvest, the masses were determined from a sample of sugarcane, cut from three rows (2 m long) in the center of the plot. The losses caused by the sugarcane borer were estimated by the intensity of the infestation by randomly observing and collecting sugarcane stems from each plot. An Emergy-Based Approach to Assess and Valuate Ecosystem Services of Tropical Wetland Pastures in Brazil

Wetland grasslands are important ecosystems for raising beef cattle, because they are highly productive and present forages with high quality. Most of these ecosystems are threatened by overgrazing or by being replaced by exotic pastures. Emergy synthesis approach was used to assess and value the services provided by native pastures wetland under three conservation status and also to compare them to exotic pastures on wetlands. The ecosystem service that was assessed included forage provision for calves production estimated from grazing capacity of cow with calf at the foot. Habitat maintenance to plant diversity and wild herbivores were also evaluated. The results showed that natural wetland pastures with better conservation status provided valuable ecosystem services and are highly renewable. Data envelopment analysis (DEA) showed that regardless of the conservation state of the natural pastures, wet native grasslands were more efficient than wet exotic grasslands. Replacing native pastures by exotic ones may reduce plant diversity and the renewability of the system. The proposed method has a holistic approach to pasture ecosystems and is able to help decision-makers to define sustainable management practices and to subsidise public policies when it comes to payments regarding ecosystem services.

Located at the National University in Bogotá,Colombia,this paper presents the development of the integration of kinematics,simplified kinetic and zero-dimensional models of indicator diagram of a double-acting,single-cylinder steam engine;the model integration is done for two configurations of the distribution system to simulate the instantaneous torque and the *** simulations are carried out at different steam entry conditions and an advance angle of 0°for the distribution system,fed with the data obtained from the characterization and metrological survey of the VE(vapor engine)parts in a CAD(computer-aided design)*** is verified that integrating the models constitutes a simulation tool that allows for the instantaneous torque deliveries and average torque of the accurate operation’s VE.

Detection of Gene Dosage in Circulating Free Plasma DNA as Biomarker for Lung Cancer

The increase in the number of gene copies at specific loci is a genetic alteration frequently associated with over expression of the related protein in cancer cells. Genes whose dose is consistently augmented in cancer include those involved in cell cycle control, proliferation, apoptosis, and angiogenesis among others. In this study, gene dose of onc ogenes MYCL1, MYCN, MYC, EGFR, ERBB2 and AKT2 in DNA obtained from lung tissue and blood plasma, of patients with primary lung cancer was evaluated with respect to normal lung tissue and plasma DNA of healthy individ uals, to determine the capacity of these genes to discriminate normal and neoplastic phenotypes. The number of copies of each gene was determined using real-time (2-△△CT). The AKT2 oncogene was found to be amplified frequently in plasma DNA from patients (74% of cases). This marker showed a noticeable ability to discriminate normal and neo-plastic phenotypes, with a 76 to 89% probability of correctly recognize a plasma sample provided by a lung cancer patient or a healthy individual. For this reason, this detection could be a very useful tool to supplement the existing diagnostic methods in pulmonary cancer.
