Riverscape connectivity is a critically important component determining the ecological condition of.lotic *** evaluated changes in f.sh assemblages caused by the loss of.connectivity by mine tailings storage dams(TSDs),hypothesizing that headwater f.sh assemblages are restructured by TSDs located downstream,even though the upstream habitats are not *** used standard methods to collect f.sh in 24 f.rst to third order sites,with half.draining to TSDs(dammed)and the other half.f.ee f.om this impact(undammed).To identif. dif.erences between treatments,we used PERMANOVA to test both environmental variables and ichthyof.una composition(Bray-Curtis similarity index)and evaluated the biological metrics that most inf.uenced assemblage composition *** expected,we observed no dif.erence between treatments f.r environmental variables,but we did observe dif.erences in f.sh assemblage *** also observed f.ve metrics with lower values in dammed streams(richness and abundance of.intolerant species,silurif.rm richness,and abundance of.Pareiorhaphis *** and Trichomycterus brasiliensis)and two metrics with higher values in dammed streams(percif.rm richness and abundance of.Oligosarcus argenteus).We believe these changes resulted f.om of.stream f.agmentation by TSDs,in addition to source-sink mechanisms and conclude that mine TSDs located downstream change headwater f.sh assemblages,an impact of.en neglected in biomonitoring and bioassessment studies.

Using an Of.-the-Shelf.Lock-In Detector f.r Admittance Spectroscopy in the Study of.Plants

We report on the development of.an electrical characterization admittance spectroscopy equipment and method based on an of.-the-shelf.lock-in detector that is cheap and yet highly sensitive. It is concluded that a contacted constant-pressure electrode conf.guration is pref.rable. It was f.rther determined that the temperature does not have great impact in the measured values, but relative humidity of.air can be important, especially in the constant-gap electrode conf.guration. In-situ measurements are dif.icult since the coupling of.the plant with the environment is of.high importance. Another aspect is the cables;they are important in that they have to be terminated by their characteristic impedance (50 Ω?in our case) to avoid ref.ections that introduce artif.cial attenuation and phase shif.s in the signal. We introduce a f.ngerprint plot type to be able to distinguish between various plants and other specimens, and can actually detect the aqueous state of.a plant.

Non-Gaussian normal dif.usion in low dimensional systems

Brownian particles suspended in disordered crowded environments of.en exhibit non-Gaussian normal dif.usion(NGND),whereby their displacements grow with mean square proportional to the observation time and non-Gaussian *** distributions appear to decay almost exponentially according to“universal”laws largely insensitive to the observation *** ef.ect is generically attributed to slow environmental f.uctuations,which perturb the local conf.guration of.the suspension *** investigate the microscopic mechanisms responsible f.r the NGND phenomenon,we study Brownian dif.usion in low dimensional systems,like the f.ee dif.usion of.ellipsoidal and active particles,the dif.usion of.colloidal particles in f.uctuating corrugated channels and Brownian motion in arrays of.planar convective *** appears to be a transient ef.ect related to the time modulation of.the instantaneous particle’s dif.usivity,which can occur even under equilibrium ***,we propose to generalize the def.nition of.NGND to include transient displacement distributions which vary continuously with the observation *** this purpose,we provide a heuristic one-parameter f.nction,which f.ts all time-dependent transient displacement distributions corresponding to the same dif.usion ***,we reveal the existence of.low dimensional systems where the NGND distributions are not leptokurtic(f.t exponential tails),as of.en reported in the literature,but platykurtic(thin sub-Gaussian tails),i.e.,with negative excess *** actual nature of.the NGND transients is related to the specif.c microscopic dynamics of.the dif.using particle.

During social interactions,the behavior of.an individual of.en depends on the sex of.its social *** animal societies have males and f.males that play very dif.erent behavioral roles,although they coexist and interact *** specif.c phases of.the colony cycle,social wasp f.males and males are contemporaries within a nest,they of.en interact,although mating occurs mostly of. the nest,theref.re providing an opportunity to test sex discrimination in contexts other than classical sexual *** perf.rmed a lure presentation experiment to test if.Mischocyttarus metathoracicus discriminate between conspecif.cs of.the 2 sexes during on-nest social *** wasps discriminated conspecif.c sex during experimentally simulated nest *** and chemical cues may account f.r this sex *** sex discrimination(evidenced by dif.erential inspective behavior f.om the nest f.males toward the f.male and the male lures),f.male wasps were as aggressive toward lures of.both *** the f.male-dominated hymenopteran societies,males are of.en subordinate and not aggressive on nest,resulting in f.males directing less aggression to them compared to other ***,*** males and f.males are both aggressive toward nestmates,so they might be perceived as similar threat during on-nest social interactions.

Secondary f.rests and human-made f.rest gaps are conspicuous f.atures of.tropical ***,behavioral responses to these aspects of.anthropogenically modif.ed f.rests remain poorly ***,we analyze the ef.ects of.small human-made clearings and secondary f.rests on tropical bats by examining the guild-and species-level activity patterns of.phyllostomids sampled in the Central Amazon,***,we contrast the temporal activity patterns and degree of.temporal overlap of.6 f.ugivorous and 4 gleaning animalivorous species in old-growth f.rest and second-growth f.rest and of.4 f.ugivores in old-growth f.rest and f.rest *** activity patterns of.f.ugivores and gleaning animalivores did not change between old-growth f.rest and second-growth,nor did the activity patterns of.f.ugivores between old-growth f.rest and ***,at the species level,we detected signif.cant dif.erences f.r Artibeus obscurus(old-growth f.rest ***-growth)and ***(old-growth f.rest ***).The degree of.temporal overlap was greater than random in all sampled ***,f.r f.ugivorous species,the degree of.temporal overlap was similar between old-growth f.rest and second-growth;whereas f.r gleaning animalivores,it was lower in second-growth than in old-growth *** the contrary,f.rest clearings were characterized by increased temporal overlap between *** in activity patterns and temporal overlap may result f.om dif.erential f.raging opportunities and dissimilar predation ***,our analyses suggest that activity patterns of.bats in second-growth and small f.rest clearings,2 of.the most prominent habitats in humanized tropical landscapes,varies little f.om the activity patterns in old-growth f.rest.

AIM:To evaluate the main f.ctors associated with mortality in patients undergoing surgery f.r perf.rated peptic ulcer ref.rred to an academic department of.general surgery in a large southern Italian city. METHODS:One hundred and f.rty-nine consecutive patients (M:f.ratio=110:39,mean age 52 yrs,range 16-95) with peptic ulcer disease were investigated f.r clinical history (including age,sex,previous history of.peptic ulcer,associated diseases,delayed abdominal surgery,ulcer site,operation type,shock on admission,postoperative general complications, and intra-abdominal and/or wound inf.ctions),serum analyses and radiological f.ndings. RESULTS:The overall mortality rate was 4.0%.Among all f.ctors,an age above 65 years,one or more associated diseases,delayed abdominal surgery,shock on admission, postoperative abdominal complications and/or wound inf.ctions,were signif.cantly associated (x^2) with increased mortality in patients undergoing surgery (0.0001f.ctors such as concomitant diseases,shock on admission,delayed surgery,and postoperative abdominal and wound inf.ctions are signif.cantly associated with f.tal outcomes and need caref.l evaluation within the general workup of.patients admitted f.r perf.rated peptic ulcer.

Tissue innervation is a complex process controlled by the expression prof.le of.signaling molecules secreted by tissue-resident cells that dictate the growth and guidance of.*** innervation is part of.the neuronal network of.the bone tissue with a def.ned spatiotemporal occurrence during bone ***,the current understanding of.the mechanisms regulating the map of.sensory innervation in the bone tissue is still ***,we demonstrated that dif.erentiation of.human mesenchymal stem cells to osteoblasts leads to a marked impairment of.their ability to promote axonal growth,evidenced under sensory neurons and osteoblastic-lineage cells *** mechanisms by which osteoblast lineage cells provide this nonpermissive environment f.r axons include paracrine-induced repulsion and loss of.neurotrophic f.ctors *** identif.ed a drastic reduction of.NGf.and BDNf.production and stimulation of.Sema3A,Wnt4;and Shh expression culminating at late stage of.OB *** noted a correlation between Shh expression prof.le,OB dif.erentiation stages,and OB-mediated axonal *** of.Shh activity and signaling reversed the repulsive action of.osteoblasts on sensory ***,to strengthen our model,we localized the expression of.Shh by osteoblasts in bone ***,our f.ndings provide evidence that the signaling prof.le associated with osteoblast phenotype dif.erentiating program can regulate the patterning of.sensory innervation,and highlight osteoblast-derived Shh as an essential player in this cue-induced regulation.
