Avian responses to an extreme weather event:The case of the‘Filomena’snowstorm in Madrid(central Spain)

Cold spells and severe weather may have detrimental effects in wild birds,but owing to the stochastic nature of these events,it is not always possible to measure their *** January 2021,a strong snowstorm known as‘Filomena’affected Spain,mainly the region of Madrid(Central Spain),which was fully covered with snow and suffered freezing temperatures for a *** bird surveys conducted in the winter-spring of 2020 and 2021(before and after Filomena)at same locations,we addressed the possible impact of the cold spell in three widespread gamebirds:Wood Pigeon(Columba palumbus),Eurasian Magpie(Pica pica)and Red-legged Partridge(Alectoris rufa).No significant abundance differences were found between years for none of the species and hunting pressure was only significantly reduced for Partridges,hence this species may have been negatively affected by *** suggest that in response to Filomena,Pigeons conducted partial migration in search of better conditions,while Magpies aggregated in certain areas of Madrid and Partridges endured the harsh conditions within their home *** results highlight the importance to alleviate negative impacts of extreme weather events in wild birds through management actions,especially for sedentary species.

Objective:To examine the impact of a 6-week endurance training on red blood cell(RBC)aging and deformability of healthy participants to detect possible improved hemorheological and performance-related ***:A total of 31 participants(17 females and 14 males)performed a 6-week moderate training protocol(three 1-h running sessions per week at 70%of maximal heart rate).Blood was sampled before and after the *** from each participant were fractioned according to density and age into 4 RBC *** were examined for changes of RBC properties,including aging distribution,RBC deformability,RBC microparticles,and phosphatidylserine *** and plasma nitrite levels were measured as indicators of nitric oxide ***:Aerobic performance,peak oxygen consumption,ventilatory thresholds,velocity at the aerobic-anaerobic threshold,and lactate at exhaustion improved after *** relative amount of both young RBCs and old RBCs increased,and the amount of the main RBC fraction *** externalization and RBC-derived microparticles *** deformability expressed as shear stress required to achieve half-maximum deformation to theoretical maximal elongation index at infinite shear stress improved in unfractioned RBCs(p<0.001).Nitrite decreased in total(p=0.001),young(p<0.001),main(p<0.001),and old(p=0.020)aged RBCs and in plasma(p=0.002),but not in very old ***:These results indicate that non-endurance-trained healthy participants benefit from a regular moderate running training program because performance-related parameters improve and a younger RBC population with improved RBC properties is induced,which might support oxygen supply in the microcirculation.

The utilisation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications in the energy sector is gaining momentum, withincreasingly intensive search for suitable, high-quality and trustworthy solutions that displayed promisingresults in research. The growing interest comes from decision makers of both the industry and policydomains, searching for applications to increase companies’ profitability, raise efficiency and facilitate theenergy transition. This paper aims to provide a novel three-dimensional (3D) indicator for AI applicationsin the energy sector, based on their respective maturity level, regulatory risks and potential benefits. Casestudies are used to exemplify the application of the 3D indicator, showcasing how the developed frameworkcan be used to filter promising AI applications eligible for governmental funding or business *** addition, the 3D indicator is used to rank AI applications considering different stakeholder preferences(risk-avoidance, profit-seeking, balanced). These results allow AI applications to be better categorised in theface of rapidly emerging national and intergovernmental AI strategies and regulations that constrain the useof AI applications in critical infrastructures.

Background:There is mounting evidence that regular physical activity is an important prerequisite for healthy cognitive ***,the finding that almost one-third of the adult population does not reach the recommended level of regular physical activity calls for further public health *** this context,digital and home-based physical training interventions might be a promising alternative to center-based intervention ***,this systematic review aimed to summarize the current state of the literature on the effects of digital and home-based physical training interventions on adult cognitive ***:In this pre-registered systematic review(PROSPERO;ID:CRD42022320031),5 electronic databases(PubMed,Web of Science,Psyclnfo,SPORTDiscus,and Cochrane Library)were searched by 2 independent researchers(FH and PT)to identify eligible studies investigating the effects of digital and home-based physical training interventions on cognitive performance in *** systematic literature search yielded 8258 records(extra17 records from other sources),of which 27 controlled trials were considered *** reviewers(FH and PT)independently extracted data and assessed the risk of bias using a modified version of the Tool for the assEssment of Study qualiTy and reporting in EXercise(TESTEX scale).Results:Of the 27 reviewed studies,15 reported positive effects on cognitive and motor-cognitive outcomes(i.e.,performance improvements in measures of executive functions,working memory,and choice stepping reaction test),and a considerable heterogeneity concerning study-related,population-related,and intervention-related characteristics was noticed.A more detailed analysis suggests that,in particular,interventions using online classes and technology-based exercise devices(i.e.,step-based exergames)can improve cognitive performance in healthy older *** one-half of the reviewed studies were rated as having a high risk of bias with respect

AIM To characterize esophageal endoluminal landmarks to permit radial and longitudinal esophageal orientation and accurate lesion *** Distance from the incisors and radial orientation were estimated for the main left bronchus and the left atrium landmarks in 207 consecutive patients using white light examination. A sub-study was also performed using white light followed by endoscopic ultrasound(EUS) in 25 consecutive patients to confirm the *** scope orientation throughout the exam was maintained at the natural axis,where the left esophageal quadrant corresponds to the area between 6 and 9 o'clock. When an anatomical landmark was identified, it was recorded with a photograph and its quadrant orientation and distance from the incisors were determined. The reference points to obtain the distances and radial orientation were as follows: the midpoint of the left main bronchus and the most intense pulsatile zone of the left atrium. With the video processor system set to moderate insufflation, measurements were obtained at the end of the patients' air *** The left main bronchus and left atrium esophageal landmarks were identified using white light in 99% and 100% of subjects at a mean distance of 25.8 cm(SD2.3), and 31.4 cm(SD 2.4) from the incisors, respectively. The left main bronchus landmark was found to be a tubular, concave, non-pulsatile, esophageal external compression, occupying approximately 1/4 of the circumference. The left atrium landmark was identified as a round, convex, pulsatile, esophageal external compression, occupying approximately 1/4 of the circumference. Both landmarks were identified using white light on the anterior esophageal quadrant.
