In vitro Cyto and Blood Compatibility of Titanium Containing Diamond-Like Carbon Prepared by Hybrid Sputtering Method

In recent years, diamond-like carbon films （DLC） have been given more attention in research in the biomedical industry due to their potential application as surface coating on biomedical materials such as metals and polymer substrates. There are many ways to prepare metal containing DLC films deposited on polymeric film substrates, such as coatings from car- bonaceous precursors and some means that incorporate other elements. In this study, we in- vestigated both the surface and biocompatible properties of titanium containing DLC （Ti-DLC） films. The Ti-DLC films were prepared on the surface of poly （ethylene terephthalate）（PET） film as a function of the deposition power level using reactive sputtering technique. The films＇ hydrophilicity was studied by contact angle and surface energy tests. Their surface morphology was studied by scanning electron microscopy （SEM） and atomic force microscopy （AFM）. Their elemental chemical composition was analyzed using energy dispersive X-spectra （EDX） and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy （XPS）. Their blood and cell compatibility was studied by in vitro tests, including tests on platelet adhesion, thrombus formation, whole blood clotting time and osteoblast cell compatibility. Significant changes in the morphological and chemical composition of the Ti-DLC films were observed and found to be a function of the deposition level. These morphological and chemical changes reduced the interfacial tension between Ti-DLC and blood proteins as well as resisted the adhesion and activation of platelets on the surface of the Ti-DLC films. The cell compatibility results exhibited significant growth of osteoblast cells on the surface of Ti incorporated DLC film compared with that of DLC film surface.

To achieve a high product quality for nano-scale systems,both realistic defect mechanisms and process variations must be taken into *** existing approaches for variation-aware digital testing either restrict themselves to special classes of defects or assume given probability distributions to model variabilities,the proposed approach combines defect-oriented testing with statistical library *** uses Monte Carlo simulations at electrical level to extract delay distributions of cells in the presence of defects and for the defect-free *** allows distinguishing the effects of process variations on the cell delay from defect-induced cell delays under process *** provide a suitable interface for test algorithms at higher levels of abstraction,the distributions are represented as histograms and stored in a histogram data base (HDB).Thus,the computationally expensive defect analysis needs to be performed only once as a preprocessing step for library characterization,and statistical test algorithms do not require any low level information beyond the *** generation of the HDB is demonstrated for primitive cells in 45 nm technology.

In vitro Evaluation with 5SBF of Alloy ASTM F75 Thermally Treated with Wollastonite

Samples of a cobalt-based alloy that underwent a surface treatment were evaluated. The samples, which were obtained by casting alloy ASTM F 75, were ground and polished on one side until a mirror finish was obtained. The samples were encapsulated in wollastonite （W） using uniaxial pressure, treated at 1 220 ~C for 1 h and subsequently tempered in water. The characterisation of the sample indicated that part of the ceramic encapsulating material was mechanically incorporated on the metallic surface by growth of the oxide layer of the alloy. After thermal treatment, a series of specimens were submerged in a solution with 5-fold simulated body fluid （5SBF） for 3, 5 and 21 days. Characterisation by scanning electron microscopy （SEM）, energy dispersive spectroscopy （EDS） and X-ray diffraction （XRD） indicated nucleation and growth of a homogenous layer of apatite, beginning on the third day when the sample was submerged.

Background and Aims:Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)surveillance in patients at risk is strongly recommended and usually performed by ultrasound(US)semiannually with or without alfa-fetoprotein(AFP)*** pa-rameters except for surveillance intervals have not been strictly *** aimed to evaluate surveillance success and risk factors for surveillance ***:Patients with≥1 US prior to HCC diagnosis performed at four tertiary referral hospitals in Germany between 2008 and 2019 were retrospectively *** success was defined as HCC detection within Milan ***:Only 47%of 156 patients,median age 63(interquartile range:57-70)years,56%male,and 96%with cirrhosis,received recom-mended surveillance modality and *** fail-ure occurred in 29%and was significantly associated with lower median model for end-stage liver disease(MELD)score odds ratio(OR)1.154,95%confidence interval(CI):1.027-1.297,p=0.025)and HCC localization within right liver lobe(OR:6.083,95%CI:1.303-28.407,p=0.022),but not with AFP≥200μg/*** with surveillance failure had sig-nificantly more intermediate/advanced tumor stages(93%vs.6%,p<0.001),fewer curative treatment options(15%vs.75%,p<0.001)and lower survival at 1 year(54%vs.75%,p=0.041),2 years(32%vs.57%,p=0.019)and 5 years(0%vs.16%,p=0.009).Alcoholic and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(OR:6.1,95%CI:1.7-21.3,p=0.005)and ascites(OR:3.9,95%CI:1.2-12.6,p=0.021)were in-dependently associated with severe visual limitations on ***:US-based HCC surveillance in patients at risk frequently fails and its failure is associated with unfavorable patient-related *** MELD score and HCC lo-calization within right liver lobe were significantly associated with surveillance failure.

In this study, the possibility of preparation and application of highly porous silica aerogel-based bioactive materials are presented. The aerogel was combined with hydroxyapatite and *** phosphate as bioactive and osteoinductive agents. The porosity of aerogels was in themesoporous region with a maximum pore diameter of 7,4 and 12.7 nm for the composite materials. The newly developed bioactive materials were characterized by scant electron microscopy. The in vitro biological effect of these modified surfaces was also tested on SAOS-2 osteogenic sarcoma cells by confocal laser scanning microscopy.

Narrow-band imaging optical chromocolonoscopy: Advantages and limitations

Narrow-band imaging （NBI） is an innovative optical technology that modifies the center wavelength and bandwidth of an endoscope＇s light into narrow-band illumination of 415 ：1： 30 nm. NBI markedly improves capillary pattern contrast and is an in vivo method for visualizing microvessel morphological changes in superficial neoplastic lesions. The scientific basis for NBI is that short wavelength light falls within the hemoglobin absorption band, thereby facilitating clearer visualization of vascular structures. Several studies have reported advantages and limitations of NBI colonoscopy in the colorectum. One difficulty in evaluating results, however, has been nonstandardization of NBI systems （Sequential and nonsequential）. Utilization of NBI technology has been increasing worldwide, but accurate pit pattern analysis and sufficient skill in magnifying colonoscopy are basic fundamentals required for proficiency in NBI diagnosis of colorectal lesions. Modern optical technology without proper image interpretation wastes resources, confuses untrained endoscopists and delays interinstitutional validation studies. Training in the principles of ＂optical image-enhanced endoscopy＂ is needed to close the gap between technological advancements and their clinical usefulness. Currently available evidence indicates that NBI constitutes an effective and reliable alternative to chromocolonoscopy for in vivo visualization of vascular structures, but further study assessing reproducibility and effectiveness in the colorectum is ongoing at various medical centers.

Avian responses to an extreme weather event:The case of the‘Filomena’snowstorm in Madrid(central Spain)

Cold spells and severe weather may have detrimental effects in wild birds,but owing to the stochastic nature of these events,it is not always possible to measure their *** January 2021,a strong snowstorm known as‘Filomena’affected Spain,mainly the region of Madrid(Central Spain),which was fully covered with snow and suffered freezing temperatures for a *** bird surveys conducted in the winter-spring of 2020 and 2021(before and after Filomena)at same locations,we addressed the possible impact of the cold spell in three widespread gamebirds:Wood Pigeon(Columba palumbus),Eurasian Magpie(Pica pica)and Red-legged Partridge(Alectoris rufa).No significant abundance differences were found between years for none of the species and hunting pressure was only significantly reduced for Partridges,hence this species may have been negatively affected by *** suggest that in response to Filomena,Pigeons conducted partial migration in search of better conditions,while Magpies aggregated in certain areas of Madrid and Partridges endured the harsh conditions within their home *** results highlight the importance to alleviate negative impacts of extreme weather events in wild birds through management actions,especially for sedentary species.

Does endurance training improve red blood cell aging and hemorheology in moderate-trained healthy individuals?

Objective:To examine the impact of a 6-week endurance training on red blood cell(RBC)aging and deformability of healthy participants to detect possible improved hemorheological and performance-related ***:A total of 31 participants(17 females and 14 males)performed a 6-week moderate training protocol(three 1-h running sessions per week at 70%of maximal heart rate).Blood was sampled before and after the *** from each participant were fractioned according to density and age into 4 RBC *** were examined for changes of RBC properties,including aging distribution,RBC deformability,RBC microparticles,and phosphatidylserine *** and plasma nitrite levels were measured as indicators of nitric oxide ***:Aerobic performance,peak oxygen consumption,ventilatory thresholds,velocity at the aerobic-anaerobic threshold,and lactate at exhaustion improved after *** relative amount of both young RBCs and old RBCs increased,and the amount of the main RBC fraction *** externalization and RBC-derived microparticles *** deformability expressed as shear stress required to achieve half-maximum deformation to theoretical maximal elongation index at infinite shear stress improved in unfractioned RBCs(p<0.001).Nitrite decreased in total(p=0.001),young(p<0.001),main(p<0.001),and old(p=0.020)aged RBCs and in plasma(p=0.002),but not in very old ***:These results indicate that non-endurance-trained healthy participants benefit from a regular moderate running training program because performance-related parameters improve and a younger RBC population with improved RBC properties is induced,which might support oxygen supply in the microcirculation.
