Influence of the number of flights on the dilute phase ratio in flighted rotating drums by PTV measurements and DEM simulations

Particle distribution in the cross-section of the flighted rotating drum(FRD)is critical to the analysis of heat and mass transfer between gas and solids.In this work,the particle tracking velocimetry(PTV)method is applied to study the influence of the number of flights on the particle motion in FRDs.The drum,installed with 1,4,8,or 12 rectangular flights,is filled with plastic balls to 15%and operated at various rotating speeds ranging from 10 rpm to 30 rpm.The results show that the number of flights has different effects on the holdup ratio and cascading rate of single flight and active flights.With 8 and 12 flights,the FRD produces a larger and more stable particle ratio of the dilute phase.Moreover,DEM simulations agree with PTV measurements,whereas literature models show significant deviations.

Recently,metal powders have been conceptualized as carbon-free recyclable energy carriers that may form a cornerstone of a sustainable energy economy.The combustion of metal dusts in oxidizing atmospheres is exothermal and yields oxide particles that could,potentially,be retrieved and,subsequently,recharged by conversion to pure metals using green primary energy sources.As a step towards a predictive tool for designing metal dust combustors,we present a fully Eulerian modelling approach for laminar particle-laden reactive flows that is,conceptually,based on a population balance description of the dispersed particles and relies on a stochastic Eulerian solution strategy.While the population balance equation(PbE)is formulated for the number-weighted distribution of characteristic properties among all particles near a spatial location,it is kinetically informed by the rates at which mass,momentum and heat are exchanged between the carrier gas and the particulate phase on the single particle level.Within the scope of the Eulerian Monte Carlo solution scheme,the property distribution is discretely represented in terms of the total number density and a finite number of property samples and the computational work is channelled towards the Eulerian estimation of mean particle properties.For the case of reactive aluminum particles,we combine a kinetic description of the gas-particle heat and mass transfer with a transport-limited continuum formulation to obtain rate expressions that are valid across the entire particle size range from the free molecular through the continuum regime.besides velocity,the particle properties include only the particle mass,temperature and oxide mass fraction.This set of thermochemical degrees of freedom is retained also as phase transitions due to melting occur,drawing on a smooth blend of the solid and liquid thermodynamic and material properties.The particle-level formulation encompasses aluminum evaporation,surface oxidation,scavenging of oxide smoke,oxide evaporation/dissociation and radi

bivariate map visualizations use different encodings to visualize two variables but comparison across multiple encodings is challenging.Compared to a univariate visualization,it is significantly harder to read regional differences and spot geographical outliers.Especially targeting inexperienced users of visualizations,we advocate the use of natural language text for augmenting map visualizations and understanding the relationship between two geo-statistical variables.We propose an approach that selects interesting findings from data analysis,generates a respective text and visualization,and integrates both into a single document.The generated reports interactively link the visualization with the textual narrative.Users can get additional explanations and have the ability to compare different regions.The text generation process is flexible and adapts to various geographical and contextual settings based on small sets of parameters.We showcase this flexibility through a number of application examples.

This paper presents a novel adaptive nonlinear model predictive control design for trajectory tracking of flexible-link manipulators consisting of feedback linearization, linear model predictive control, and unscented Kalman filtering. Reducing the nonlinear system to a linear system by feedback linearization simplifies the optimization problem of the model predictive controller significantly, which, however, is no longer linear in the presence of parameter uncertainties and can potentially lead to an undesired dynamical behaviour. An unscented Kalman filter is used to approximate the dynamics of the prediction model by an online parameter estimation, which leads to an adaptation of the optimization problem in each time step and thus to a better prediction and an improved input action. Finally, a detailed fuzzy-arithmetic analysis is performed in order to quantify the effect of the uncertainties on the control structure and to derive robustness assessments. The control structure is applied to a serial manipulator with two flexible links containing uncertain model parameters and acting in three-dimensional space.

The many important benefits of physical exercise also encompass maintenance or improvement of cognitive functions. Among the variousmechanisms underlying the association between physical exercise and brain health, recent evidence attests that neurotrophin receptor signalingmay have an important role, because the activation of this pathway leads to growth and differentiation of new neurons and synapses, supportsaxonal and dendritic growth, fosters synaptic plasticity, and preserves survival of existing neurons. In this review of published evidence, we highlightthat a positive relationship exists between physical exercise and circulating brain-derived neurotrophic factor levels and that the postexercisevariation of this molecule is associated with improvement of neurocognitive functioning. Less clear evidence has instead been published forother neurotrophins, such as nerve growth factor, neurotrophin-3, and neurotrophin-4. Overall, promotion of adequate volumes and intensities ofphysical exercise (i.e., approximately 3 months of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise, with 2—3 sessions/week lasting not less than 30 min)may hence be regarded as an inexpensive and safe strategy for boosting brain-derived neurotrophic factor release, thus preserving or restoringcognitive functions.

A heat transfer study was conducted,in the framework of Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD),on a Hot-Wire Chemical Vapour Deposition(HWCVD)reactor chamber to determine a safe deposition distance for atomic hydrogen produced by HWCVD.The objective of this study was to show the feasibility of using heat transfer simulations in determining a safe deposition distance for deposition of this kind.All CFD simulations were set-up and solved within the framework of the CFD packages of OpenFOAM namely;snappyHexMesh for mesh generation,buoyantSimpleFoam and rhoSimpleFoam as the solvers and paraView as the post-processing tool.Using a standard set of deposition parameters for the production of atomic hydrogen by HWCVD,plots of the gas temperature in the deposition region were produced.From these plots,we were able to determine a safe deposition distance in the HWCVD reactor to be in the range between 3 and 4 cm from the filament.
