Using Thermoelastic Stress Analysis to detect Damaged and Hot Spot Areas in Structural Components

This paper discusses the suitability of using TSA （thermoelastic stress analysis） as an advanced tool to detect damaged areas and highly stressed （hot spot） areas in structural components. Such components can be, for example, parts of large structural panels built of welded metallic or composite materials. Besides detecting hot spot areas, it is expected that stresses in these areas can be suitably quantified and processed in order to predict crack initiation and propagation due to in-service loads. The paper starts with references to selected review and application articles on the subject. Two simple laboratory experiments are presented which illustrate the quality of the results that can be achieved using TSA. In the first experiment, a stainless steel T-joint designed to model a welded structural component is analysed. The T-joint had a machine-notched crack-like flaw close to the component＇s weld toe. The qualitative and quantitative experimental results determined along four specified areas of the T-joint model showed that TSA can indeed be used as a tool to detect loaded cracks and hot spots in large metallic structures, and that stresses can be accurately evaluated. In the second experiment, a prismatic bar made of CFrE （carbon fibre-reinforced-epoxy） was tested to locate three subsurface areas of damage introduced beforehand into the component. Two of these inside damaged areas were detected to be 3.1 mm and 7.1 mm from the observed surface. The positive results achieved with the two lab experiments, along with a review of the selected research publications, indicate that TSA application can be extended to the real-world field of structural components. Topics to be addressed in this research field should have to do with components that work under random or quasi-cyclic service loading, problems where adiabatic conditions do not prevail, and reduction of the cost of infra-red cameras.

Influence of Bed Geometry on the Drying of Skimmed milk in a Spouted Bed

In this present work, the fluidynamic and drying process of skimmed milk in conical and conical-cylindrical spouted bed was analyzed as a function of different bed geometry and operating conditions. It used three internal cone angles (45°, 60° and 75°), different loads of inert particles (1.50, 3.00 and 4.50 kg) and a fixed static bed height (20.50 cm). Polyethylene particles of 4.38 mm of diameter and 930.50 ± 0.3 kg/m3 of specific mass were used as inert particles. An artificial neural network model was trained to predict the peak pressure drop and the minimum spout velocity from an experimental data bank. The experimental results showed a significant effect of geometric characteristics of the bed on fluidynamics parameters. It was also observed for the operating conditions that conical spouted bed and cone angle of 45° were more suitable for drying skimmed milk. The neural network provided predictions in good agreement with experimental data.

A simple and distinguished nebulizer approach to prepare CdS thin films

In this paper, we report the substrate temperature induced change in structural, optical, morphological,luminescence and photoelectrochemical properties of CdS films deposited by a simple and facile approach called nebulized spray pyrolysis technique. X-ray diffraction study confirmed the deposited CdS films belong to hexagonal wurtzite structure, with preferential orientation along c-axis,(002) direction perpendicular to the substrate plane. The crack free, uniform, and homogeneously distributed spherical particles are witnessed from AFm image. Various optical parameters like energy band gap, optical conductivity,refractive index, extinction coefficient, dielectric constants, and dispersion energy parameters of the films were evaluated. The strong band edge emission observed in the PL study may be attributed to the recombination of excitations and/or shallowly trapped electron-hole pairs. The first and second overtone of lo modes of CdS at 302 and 600 cm-1are observed in the raman study. The photoelectrochemical properties of the films were also tested.

Seaweeds have been a food source since ancient times(600 BC)and are still widely used in Asia,mainly in traditional Chinese medicine and Japanese folk ***,seaweed compounds and extracts have been gaining interest from the biomedical and pharmaceutical market *** have been referenced as feasible solutions in finding new potential compounds and therapies in prevention,control,and reduction of cancer development due to the multirole of some bioactive components(e.g,phenolic compounds and sulphated polysaccharides).moreover,seaweeds are rich in important health-promoting molecules[such as poly and highly unsaturated fatty acids(PUfas and HUfas),essential amino acids,vitamins,and dietary fibers]and minerals(calcium,iron,iodine,magnesium,phosphorus,potassium,zinc,copper,manganese,selenium,and fluoride).In this review,the potential therapeutic effects of seaweed in the prevention and treatment of cancer are approached,as well as nutraceutical properties of seaweed to promote cell homeostasis.

采用傅里叶变换红外光谱(FTIr)和X射线光电子能谱分析(XPS)研究了粉煤灰地聚合物固封Cr3+的机理。含Cr的污泥由人工合成,主要成分是Cr(OH)3。浸出试验采用ICP-AES方法,测试了固封Cr3+前后,粉煤灰地聚合物中Al和Si的浸出量;研究结果表明,掺入含Cr的污泥后,粉煤灰地聚合物中Si和Al元素的浸出量较不掺污泥时减少了,且浸出Si元素减少的幅度比浸出Al元素降低的幅度要大。FTIr结果显示,Cr3+的掺入削弱了粉煤灰地聚合物主峰的强度,增加了Si—O—Si和Al—O—Si的振动波数;XPS测试结果表明,O(1s),Si(2p)和Cr(2p)的结合能都有不同程度的改变,而Al(2p)的结合能几乎没有发生变化;结果揭示Cr3+参与了粉煤灰地聚合物中硅酸结构的聚合,粉煤灰地聚合物固封Cr3+,不仅仅只是物理性的包裹作用,而且主要是化学反应的结果。

A mESO-β SCALE SImULATION OF THE EFFECTS OF BOrEAL FOrEST ECOSYSTEm ON THE loWEr ATmOSPHErE

Based on the Intensive Field Campaign(IFC-1)data of Boreal Ecosystem-Atmosphere Study (BOrEAS).a three-dimensional meso-β scale model is used to simulate the effect of boreal forests on the lower atmosphere.A fine horizontal resolution of 2 km×2 km is used in order to distinguish the vegetative heterogeneity in the boreal region.A total of 20×25 grid points cover the entire sub- modeling area in BOrEAS' South Study Area(SSA).The ecosystem types and their coverage in each grid square are extracted from the North American Land Cover Characteristics Data Base (NALCCD)generated by the *** Survey(USGS)and the University of Nebraska- Lincoln(UNL).The topography of the study area is taken from the Digital Elevation map(dem) of *** model outputs include the components of the energy balance budget within the canopy and at the *** turbulence parameters in the atmospheric boundary layer and the wind. temperature and humidity profiles extending up to a height of 1500 *** addition to the fine time and spatial step,the unique feature of the present model is the incorporation of both dynamic and biological effects of the Boreal forest into the model parameterization *** model results compare favorably with BOrEAS' IFC-1 data in 1994 when the forest was in the luxuriant growing period.

Chemical and Sr-Nd compositions and ^(40)Ar/^(39)Ar ages of NW-trending dolerite dikes of Burkina faso: Evidence for a mesoproterozoic magmatism in the West African Craton

The Paleoproterozoic basement of the northeastern part of the Leo-man craton is intruded by generally NW-trending dikes. These regional scale dikes extend over 1000 km in Burkina faso, mali and Niger. We present chemical and Sr-Nd isotope compositions, as well as 40 Ar/39 Ar ages of these dikes with the following strikes N98°-N112°, and N114°-N124° in NE Burkina faso. Field relationships show that the dikes are posterior to all other rock types dated between 2.26 Ga and 2.0 Ga. Chemical data indicate that the dikes are continental flood basalts and composed of low-Ti(TiO2 ≤ 2 wt.%) sub-alkaline basalts and andesites. They exhibit a minor negative Europium anomaly(0.86-0.99) and slightly fractionated rEE patterns((La/Yb)_N= 2.5-9.1; Yb_N = 9.5-19.9). The ratios of Th/Ta(1.3-11.4) and Ce/Pb(5.2-58.5)suggest a varying crustal assimilation of the dike magmas during ascent in the continental crust for all studied samples. Calculated P-T conditions indicate that the magma reached temperatures of 1285 ℃(calculated from olivine compositions) and pressures of 6.9 kbar(calculated for pyroxene minerals).Calculated initial 87 Sr/86 Sr(0.70040-0.70260) and ε_(Nd)(t)=+2.1 to-3.5 at 1575 ma,also point to a crustal contamination with the most primitive samples showing T_(Dm) values of 1946 ma and 2154 ma. The low values of La/Ba(rast with the low Th/Nb(ric mantle or subduction-modified mantle as possible source for the dikes. Sr-Nd data, mg# and NbTa-Zr-Y-Th-Tb-Yb compositions further suggest that the most primitive samples were emplaced in a none orogenic setting and their magmas were subjected to variable crustal contaminations. Literature and the present whole rock 40 Ar/39 Ar age determinations show that the dikes were emplaced during a widespread mesoproterozoic magmatism between 1.6 Ga and 1.2 Ga, and were affected by a thermal event causing the argon systematics resetting, best constrained by the date of sample KK1(123

A Dynamic Forecasting System with Applications in Production logistics

Production logistics involve the co-ordination of ac tivities such as production and materials control (PmC), inventory management, p roduct life cycle management, etc. Those activities demand for an accurate forec asting model. However, the conventional methods of making sell and buy decision based on human forecast or conventional moving average and exponential smoothing methods is no longer be sufficient to meet the future need. Furthermore, the un derlying statistics of the market information change from time to time due to a number of reasons such as change of global economic environment, government poli cies and business risks. This demands for highly adaptive forecasting model which is robust enough to response and adapt well to the fast changes in the dat a characteristics, in other words, the trajectory of the "dynamic characteristic s" of the data. In this paper, an adaptive time-series modelling method was proposed for short -term dynamic forecasting. The method em.loys an autoregressive (Ar) time-seri es model to carry out the forecasting process. A modified least mean square (mLm S) adaptive filter algorithm was established for adjusting the Ar model coeffici ents so as to minimise the sum of squared of forecasting errors. A prototype dyn amic forecasting system was built based on the adaptive time-series modelling m ethod. Basically, the dynamic forecasting system can be divided into two phases, i.e. the Learning Phase and the Application Phase. The learning procedures star t with the determination of upper limit of the adaptation gain based on the conv ergence in the mean square criterion. Hence, the optimum ELmS filter parameters are determined using an iteration algorithm which changes each filter parameter i.e. the order, the adaptation gain andthe values initial coefficient vector on e by one inside a predetermined iteration range. First Principles Study of Half metallic Properties of VSb Surface and VSb/GaSb (001) Interface

The structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of VSb in zincblende, and NiAs phases, VSb （001） film surfaces and its interfaces with GaSh （001） have been investigated within the framework of the density functional theory using the FPLAPW＋lo approach. The NiAs structure is more stable than the ZB phase, ZB VSb is found to a half-metallic ferromagnetic. The V-terminated surfaces retain the half-metallic character, while the half-metallicity is destroyed for Sb-terminated surfaces due to surface states, which originate from p electrons. The phase diagram obtained through the ab-initio atomistic thermodynamics shows that the formation energy of ZB VSb is about 0.1 ryd. The half-metallicity character is also preserved at VSb/GaSb （001） interface. The conduction band minimum （CBm） of VSb in the minority spin case lies about 0.47 eV above that of GaSb, suggesting that the majority spin can be injected into GaSb without being flipped to the conduction bands of the minority spin.
