Two-dimensional numerical simulations are performed to study the propulsive performance of fish-like swimming foils using the immersed-boundary method. A single fish as well as two fishes in tandem arrangement are studied. First, the effect of the phase speed on the propulsive performance of a single fish is analyzed. The wake structures and pressure distribution near the wavy fish are also examined. The results show good correlation with those by previous researchers. Second, two tandem fishes with the same phase speed and amplitude are studied. The results show that the fish situated directly behind another one endure a higher thrust than that of a single one.

We calculated a grid of evolutionary tracks of rotating models with masses between 1.0 and 3.0 M⊙ and resolution δM 〈 0.02 M⊙, which can be used to study the effects of rotation on stellar evolution and on the characteristics of star clusters. The value of ～ 2.05 Me is a critical mass for the effects of rotation on stellar struc- ture and evolution. For stars with M 〉 2.05 Me, rotation leads to an increase in the convective core and prolongs their lifetime on the main sequence （MS）; rotating mod- els evolve more slowly than non-rotating ones; the effects of rotation on the evolution of these stars are similar to those of convective core overshooting. However for stars with 1.1 〈 M/M⊙ 〈 2.05, rotation results in a decrease in the convective core and shortens the duration of the MS stage; rotating models evolve faster than non-rotating ones. When the mass has values in the range ～ 1.7 - 2.0 M⊙, the mixing caused by rotationally induced instabilities is not efficient; the hydrostatic effects dominate pro- cesses associated with the evolution of these stars. For models with masses between about 1.6 and 2.0 M⊙, rotating models always exhibit lower effective temperatures than non-rotating ones at the same age during the MS stage. For a given age, the lower the mass, the smaller the change in the effective temperature. Thus rotations could lead to a color spread near the MS turnoff in the color-magnitude diagram for intermediate-age star clusters.

We offer an intrinsic theoretical framework to reveal the inner relationships among three theories for Euler characteristic number, including Gauss Bonnet-Chern theorem, Hop-Poincaré theorem and Morse theory. Moreover, we consider the Gauss Bonnet-Chern （GBC） form imbedded in arbitrary higher-dimensional manifold, which suggests a Hodge dual tensor current. We show the brane structure inherent in the GBC tensor current and obtain the generalized Nambu action for the multi branes with quantized topological charge.

Osteochondral allografting has been proved to be a useful method to treat diseased or damaged areas of joint surfaces. Operational long-term stocks of grafts which supply a buffer between procurement and utilization would contribute to the commercialization or industrialization of this technology. Vitrification has been thought to be a promising method for successful preservation of articular cartilage （AC）, but high concentration cryoprotectants （CPAs） are used which may cause high cellular toxicity. An effective way to reduce CPA toxioity is to increase CPA concen- tration gradually while the temperature is lowered. Understanding the mechanism of （31~A permeation at subzero temperatures is important for designing the cryopreservation protocol. In this research, the permeation of dimethyl sulfoxide （MezSO） in ovine AC at subzero temperatures was studied experimentally. Pretreated AC discs were ex- posed in Me2SO solutions for different time （0, 5, 15, 30, 50, 80, and 120 min） at three temperature levels （-10, -20, and -30℃）. The Me2SO concentration within the tissue was determined by ultraviolet （UV） spectrophotometry. The diffusion coefficients were estimated to be 0.85×10-6, 0.48×10-8, and 0.27×10-6 cm2/s at -10, -20, and -,30℃, respectively, and the corresponding activation energy was 29.23 kJ/mol. Numerical simulation was performed to com- pare two Me2SO addition protocols, and the results demonstrated that the total loading duration could be effectively reduced with the knowledge of permeation kinetics.

Numerical quadrature schemes of a non-conforming finite element method for general second order elliptic problems in two dimensional （2-D） and three dimensional （3-D） space are discussed in this paper. We present and analyze some optimal numerical quadrature schemes. One of the schemes contains only three sampling points, which greatly improves the efficiency of numerical computations. The optimal error estimates are derived by using some traditional approaches and techniques. Lastly, some numerical results are provided to verify our theoretical analysis.

To identify systems with non-uniformly sampled input data, a recursive Bayesian identification algorithm with covariance resetting is proposed. Using estimated noise transfer function as a dynamic filter, the system with colored noise is transformed into the system with white noise. In order to improve estimates, the estimated noise variance is employed as a weighting factor in the algorithm. Meanwhile, a modified covariance resetting method is also integrated in the proposed algorithm to increase the convergence rate. A numerical example and an industrial example validate the proposed algorithm.

Cells are the fundamental units of biological systems and exhibit unique development trajectories and molecular features. Our exploration of how the genomes orchestrate the formation and maintenance of each cell, and control the cellular phenotypes of various organismsis, is both captivating and intricate. Since the inception of the first single-cell RNA technology, technologies related to single-cell sequencing have experienced rapid advancements in recent years. These technologies have expanded horizontally to include single-cell genome, epigenome,proteome, and metabolome, while vertically, they have progressed to integrate multiple omics data and incorporate additional information such as spatial sc RNA-seq and CRISPR screening. Single-cell omics represent a groundbreaking advancement in the biomedical field,offering profound insights into the understanding of complex diseases, including cancers. Here, we comprehensively summarize recent advances in single-cell omics technologies, with a specific focus on the methodology section. This overview aims to guide researchers in selecting appropriate methods for single-cell sequencing and related data analysis.

Mineralogical characterization of airborne individual particulates in Beijing PM10

This work mainly focuses on the mineralogical study of particulate matter（PM10） in Beijing. Samples were collected on polycarbonate filter from April, 2002 to March, 2003 in Beijing urban area. Scanning electronic microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray（SEM/EDX） was used to investigate individual mineral particles in Beijing PM10. 1454 individual mineral particulates from 48 samples were analysed by SEM/EDX. The results revealed that mineral particulates were complex and heterogeneous. 38 kinds of minerals in PM10 were identified. The clay minerals, of annual average percentage of 30.1%, were the main composition among the identified minerals, and illite/smectite was the main composition in clay minerals, reaching up to 35%. Annual average percentage of quartz, calcite, compound particulates, carbonates were 13.5%, 10.9%, 11.95%, 10.31%, respectively. Annual average percentage less than 10% were gypsum, feldspar, dolomite, and so on. Fluorite, apatite, halite, barite and chloridize zinc（ZnCl2） were firstly identified in Beijing PM10. Sulfurization was found on surface of mineral particles, suggested extensive atmospheric reaction in air during summer.

Pearprocess:A new phenotypic tool for stone cell trait evaluation in pear fruit

The content of stone cells is an important factor for pear breeding as a high content indicates severely reduced fruit quality in terms of fruit *** the frozen-HCI method is currently a common method used to evaluate stone cell content in pears,it is limited in incomplete separation of stone cell and pulp and is time consuming and *** research is a promising strategy in modern scientific research for phenotypic data collect!on and is increasingly used in studying *** far,we lack a quantitative tool that can effectively determine stone cell content in pear *** developed a program,Pearprocess,based on an imaging protocol using computer vision and image processing algorithms applied to digital *** photos of hand-cut sections of pear fruit stained with phloroglucin-HCI(Wiesner's reagent),Pearprocess can extract and analyze image-based data to quantify the stone cell-related traits measured in this study:number,size,area and density of stone *** quantified these traits for 395 pear accessions by Pearprocess and revealed large variation in different pear varieties and *** number of stone cells varied greatly from value of 138 to 2866,the density of stone cells ranged from 0.0019 to 0.0632 cm2 cm-2,the distribution of stone cell area ranged from 0.06 to 2.02 cm2,and the stone cell size was between 2e-4 and 1e-3 ***,trait data were correlated with fruit taste *** found that stone cell density is likely the most important factor affecting the taste of pear *** summary,Pearprocess is a new cost-effective web-application for semi-automated quantification of two-dimensional phenotypic traits from digital imagery using an easy imaging *** simpler,feasible and accurate method to evaluate stone cell traits of fruit is a promising new tool for use in evaluating future germplasms for crop breeding programs.
