Convergence Rate Analysis of Gaussian Belief Propagation for Markov Networks

Gaussian belief propagation algorithm(GaBP) is one of the most important distributed algorithms in signal processing and statistical learning involving Markov networks. It is well known that the algorithm correctly computes marginal density functions from a high dimensional joint density function over a Markov network in a finite number of iterations when the underlying Gaussian graph is acyclic. It is also known more recently that the algorithm produces correct marginal means asymptotically for cyclic Gaussian graphs under the condition of walk summability(or generalised diagonal dominance). This paper extends this convergence result further by showing that the convergence is exponential under the generalised diagonal dominance condition,and provides a simple bound for the convergence rate. Our results are derived by combining the known walk summability approach for asymptotic convergence analysis with the control systems approach for stability analysis.

This paper studies the stability problem for networked control systems.A general result,called network gain theorem,is introduced to determine the input-to-state stability(ISS)for interconnected nonlinear *** show how this result generalises the previously known small gain theorem and cyclic small gain theorem for *** the case of linear networked systems,a complete characterisation of the stability condition is provided,together with two distributed algorithms for computing the network gain:the classical Jacobi iterations and a message-passing *** the case of nonlinear networked systems,characterisation of the ISS condition can be done using M-functions,and Jacobi iterations can be used to compute the network gain.

A newly proposed distributed dynamic state estimation algorithm based on the maximum a posteriori(MAP) technique is generalised and studied for power systems. The system model involves linear time-varying load dynamics and nonlinear measurements. The main contribution of this paper is to compare the performance and feasibility of this distributed algorithm with several existing distributed state estimation algorithms in the literature. Simulations are tested on the IEEE 39-bus and 118-bus systems under various operating conditions. The results show that this distributed algorithm performs better than distributed quasi-steady state estimation algorithms which do not use the load dynamic model. The results also show that the performance of this distributed method is very close to that by the centralized state estimation method. The merits of this algorithm over the centralized method lie in its low computational complexity and low communication load. Hence, the analysis supports the efficiency and benefits of the distributed algorithm in applications to large-scale power systems.

Target tracking using wireless sensor networks requires efficient collaboration among sensors to tradeoff between energy consumption and tracking accuracy. This paper presents a collaborative target tracking approach in wire- less sensor networks using the combination of maximum likelihood estimation and the Kalman filter. The cluster leader converts the received nonlinear distance measurements into linear observation model and approximates the covariance of the converted measurement noise using maximum likelihood estimation, then applies Kalman filter to recursively update the target state estimate using the converted measurements. Finally, a measure based on the Fisher information matrix of maximum likelihood estimation is used by the leader to select the most informative sensors as a new tracking cluster for further tracking. The advantages of the proposed collaborative tracking approach are demonstrated via simulation results.

In this study, consensus problem for general high-order multi-agent systems with communication delay is investigated. Given the unstable agent dynamics and a known communication delay, two consensus protocols are designed to guarantee consensus over undirected network. By jointly researching the effects of agent dynamics and network topology, allowable delay bounds depending on the maxima of concave functions are easy to calculate. Especially, the maximum delay bound is derived when the network topology is completely connected. The main approach for the same involves designing the control gains on the basis of the solution of a parametric algebraic Riccati equation. Finally, the theoretical results are demonstrated via numerical simulations.

Distributed computations for large-scale networked systems using belief propagation

In this paper we investigate the optimal load shifting problem via electric vehicles（EVs） in a smart grid scenario which aims at flattening the total demand curve as much as possible while each EV’s local constraints are *** assume bidirectional energy exchange between EVs and the power grid and formulate the problem as a mixed integer quadratic programming *** solve this problem in a decentralized fashion,we propose a decentralized optimal algorithm where EVs and the aggregator cooperatively find the optimal solution by communicating in a star network and conducting local *** implement the proposed algorithm,only limited data are exchanged and the aggregator does not need any parameter information of *** proposed algorithm converges much faster than traditional centralized methods/commercial solvers,as the mixed integer part is broken down into local subproblems and solved in parallel by each *** proof of the proposed algorithm is presented and numerical experiments show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
