Bitter compounds delay gastric emptying while affecting plasma hormone profiles and duodenal nutrient absorption in a pig model

OBJECTIVE Bitter compounds induced innate aversion which was reflected in loss of appetite and decreased fat deposition in a pig model reported by our group. However, the mechanism remains *** hypothesized that bitter compounds would reduce gastric emptying and slow down intestinal peristalsis and modulate intestinal nutrient absorption. METHODS Realtime PCR was used to study the expression of porcine bitter taste receptor genes in the tongue, stomach and duodenum that related to the tested bitter *** non-invasive scintigraphy, organ bath and ussing chamber techniques were used to investigate the intestinal motility and nutrient absorption in a pig model. RESULTS The results showed high expression of T2 Rs both in the stomach and duodenum and that the expression level was most significant in the epithelium relative to the smooth muscle layer. The scintigraphy imaging data showed that caffeine and quinine mixed feed significantly(P<0.01 and P<0.05 respectively) decreased gastric emptying compared to control pigs. In addition, an ex-vivo intestinal smooth muscle contraction study illustrated that the two bitter compounds induced(P<0.01) dose-response relaxation in the duodenum. We also observed that the relaxation effects were inhibited by T2 R blockers and were significantly(P<0.05) altered by bitter meal *** quinine supplemented meal reduced(P<0.05) glucose uptake during the first 25 min post prandial whereas both caffeine and quinine increased(P<0.05) the insulinogenic index compared to the control group. Two hours after feeding, plasma GLP-1 level was significantly(P<0.05)increased in caffeine group than control group. Moreover, in vivo exposure to dietary quinine significantly(P<0.01) increased transcel ular permeability. Sparse Modal Decomposition Method Addressing Underdetermined Vortex-Induced Vibration Reconstruction Problem for Marine Risers

When investigating the vortex-induced vibration(VIV)of marine risers,extrapolating the dynamic response on the entire length based on limited sensor measurements is a crucial step in both laboratory experiments and fatigue monitoring of real *** problem is conventionally solved using the modal decomposition method,based on the principle that the response can be approximated by a weighted sum of limited vibration ***,the method is not valid when the problem is underdetermined,i.e.,the number of unknown mode weights is more than the number of known *** study proposed a sparse modal decomposition method based on the compressed sensing theory and the Compressive Sampling Matching Pursuit(Co Sa MP)algorithm,exploiting the sparsity of VIV in the modal *** the validation study based on high-order VIV experiment data,the proposed method successfully reconstructed the response using only seven acceleration measurements when the conventional methods failed.A primary advantage of the proposed method is that it offers a completely data-driven approach for the underdetermined VIV reconstruction problem,which is more favorable than existing model-dependent solutions for many practical applications such as riser structural health monitoring.

Genetically predicted fatty liver disease and risk of psychiatric disorders: A mendelian randomization study

BACKGROUND Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)and alcohol-related liver disease(Ar-LD)constitute the primary forms of chronic liver disease,and their incidence is progressively increasing with changes in lifestyle *** studies have do-cumented a correlation between the occurrence and development of prevalent mental disorders and fatty *** To investigate the correlation between fatty liver and mental disorders,thus ne-cessitating the implementation of a mendelian randomization(MR)study to elu-cidate this *** Data on NAFLD and ArLD were retrieved from the genome-wide association studies catalog,while information on mental disorders,including Alzheimer's disease,schizophrenia,anxiety disorder,attention deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD),bipolar disorder,major depressive disorder,multiple personality dis-order,obsessive-compulsive disorder(OCD),post-traumatic stress disorder(PTSD),and schizophrenia was acquired from the psychiatric genomics consor-tium.A two-sample MR method was applied to investigate mediators in signifi-cant *** After excluding weak instrumental variables,a causal relationship was identified between fatty liver disease and the occurrence and development of some psychia-tric ***,the findings indicated that ArLD was associated with a significantly elevated risk of developing ADHD(OR:5.81,95%CI:5.59-6.03,P<0.01),bipolar disorder(OR:5.73,95%CI:5.42-6.05,P=0.03),OCD(OR:6.42,95%CI:5.60-7.36,P<0.01),and PTSD(OR:5.66,95%CI:5.33-6.01,P<0.01).Meanwhile,NAFLD significantly increased the risk of developing bipolar disorder(OR:55.08,95%CI:3.59-845.51,P<0.01),OCD(OR:61.50,95%CI:6.69-565.45,P<0.01),and PTSD(OR:52.09,95%CI:4.24-639.32,P<0.01).CONCLUSION Associations were found between genetic predisposition to fatty liver disease and an increased risk of a broad range of psychiatric disorders,namely bipolar disorder,OCD,and PTSD,highlighting the significance of preven-tive measures against psy

Grain size effect on the assembly quality of micro-scaled barrel formed by microforming

In this research,a method employing micro-extrusion was designed to produce the micro-scaled barrel-shaped parts with complex geometrical features to study the feasibility of the proposed microforming method and its grain size effect on the formability of the complicated internal features in terms of deformation behavior,material evolution,accuracy of dimensions and final components *** results reveal that the deformation behavior is highly affected by grain size and becomes unpredictable with increased grain *** addition,assembly parameters including feature dimension,tolerance and coaxiality also vary with grain size,and the variation of grain size needs to be accommodated by different assembly types,viz.,clearance fit or transition *** the microstructural evolution aspect,it was identified there were two dead zones and four shear bands,and the formation of these deformation zones was barely affected by the variation in grain *** bulges,cracks,and fracture induced voids were observed on the surface of the final components,tailoring the microstructure of the working material with finer grains could significantly avoid these *** study advances the understanding of forming microparts by extrusion processes and provides guidance for microforming of similar microparts.

Effect of Al content in molten steel on interaction between MgO-C refractory and SPHC steel

The effect of Al content in molten steel on the interaction between SPHC steel(0.005-0.068 wt.%Al,and 19×10^(-4)-58×10^(-4)wt.%O)and MgO-C refractory(11.63 wt.%C)was ***-metallic inclusions in the steel were examined at various periods(0,5,15,30,45,and 60 min)as well as the MgO-C interface after 60 min of corrosion at 1600℃.The results show that when MgO-C refractory comes into contact with SPHC steel,the refractory interface consists of three layers arranged from the innermost to the outermost,including the original refractory layer,the dense MgO layer,and the iron infiltration *** carbon in the MgO-C refractories and the Al content in the molten steel undergo a reaction with the MgO in the refractories,resulting in an increase in Mg concentration in the *** Al content in the molten steel from 0.005 to 0.068 wt.%causes a spinel layer to appear at the interface,and the disappearance time of Al_(2)O_(3) inclusions in the steel decreases from 60 to 30 min,while the average MgO content in inclusions ***,controlling the Al content in the molten steel and the smelting duration can help regulate the formation of spinel inclusionsinthe steel.

Numerical Simulation of the Airflow within a Canopy Using a 3D Canopy Structure

Canopy architecture of windbrpak is vital in agriculture, meteorological and ecological applications. In this study, computational fluid dynamics （CFD） and field experiments were used to investigate the flow characteristics and flow resistance through vegetation canopies with several different leaf area densities （ Lad ）. Compared with traditional modelling approaches, the present model introduced 3D architecture of the tree that contained a hard trunk, branches and artificial leaves to model the effect of leaves and the other parts of the canopy on airflow. Visual basic application （VBA） produced the 3D architecture of canopy. Simulations were made with the full closure model （FCM） and microcosmic model （MM）. Canopies L.~ used in the simulations were 7,76, 18, 12 and 25, 89 m-1. The objectives of this paper are to analyze the contour of velocity （U） and turbulent kinetic energy （k） of two models in different leaf area densities, comparing the simulation results with experimental data/other works and investigate the real effects of the canopy on the airflow distribution. Results are encouraging, compared with the FCM, U and k of MM profiles qualitatively agree better with other works. Therefore, the model and method are recommended for future use in simulating turbulent flows in forest canopies.

Energy modeling and optimization of building condenser water systems with all-variable speed pumps and tower fans:A case study

The emergence of building condenser water systems with all-variable speed pumps and tower fans allows for increased efficiency and flexibility of chiller plants in partial load operation but also increases the control complexity of condenser water *** study aims to develop an integrated modeling technique for evaluating and optimizing the energy performance of such a condenser water *** proposed system model is based on the semi-physical semi-empirical chiller,pump,and cooling tower models,with capabilities of fully considering the hydraulic and thermal interactions in the condenser water loop,being solved analytically and much faster than iterative solvers and supporting the explicit optimization of the pump and tower fan frequency.A mathematical approach,based on the system model and constrained optimization technique,is subsequently established to evaluate the energy performance of a typical dual setpoint-based variable speed strategy and find its energy-saving potential and most efficient operation by jointly optimizing pumps and tower *** all-variable speed chiller plant from Wuhan,China,is used for a case study to validate the system model’s accuracy and explore its *** results showed that the system model can accurately simulate the condenser water system’s performance under various operating *** optimizing the frequencies of pumps and tower fans,the total system energy consumption can be reduced by 12%–13%compared to the fixed dual setpoint-based strategy with range and approach setpoints of 4℃and 2℃.In contrast,the energy-saving potential of optimizing the cooling tower sequencing is insignificant.A simple joint speed control method for optimizing the pumps and tower fans emerged,i.e.,the optimal pump and fan frequency are linearly correlated(if both are non-extremes)and depend on the chiller part load ratio only,irrespective of the ambient wet-bulb temperature and chilled water supply *** was also foun
