Aflatoxins cause acute and chronic health and production effects in humans and animals,*** study reports on the exposure of the Kenyan population to the two mycotoxins in two counties(Nandi and Makueni)using children younger than 5 years as the proxy.A questionnaire was administered,which captured knowledge of the incidences of acute aflatoxin poisoning,food consumption *** of aflatoxin in samples of urine,breast milk,maize,sorghum,and millet was done using ceLISA and *** and sorghum are used in the weaning formula of *** difference in consumption of maize-and sorghum-based diets in children between younger than 1 and between 1 and 5 years was significant with P=0.037 and P=0.002,respectively,in Nandi and *** children younger than 5 years,the consumption of maize ranged from 0.1 to 0.25 kg per person per day in Nandi and Makueni with an aflatoxin exposure rate of 0.011 and 0.49μg per kg body weight(bwt)per day,*** exposure to aflatoxin through milk for children younger than 5 years was 4×10^(−4) and 1×10^(−4)μg per kg bwt per day in Makueni and Nandi,*** exposure of nursing children through breast milk was 6×10^(−3) and 1×10^(−6)μg per kg bwt per day in Makueni and Nandi,*** younger than 30 months in Makueni had 1.4 times higher levels of aflatoxin M1(AFM1)in urine than those of the same age in *** stunting and severe stunting rates in Makueni and Nandi were 28.7%,18.5%and 30.7%,16.5%,***,there is need for urgent mitigation measures,a constant surveillance program,strict regulations,and awareness creation directed at poor households to reduce dietary exposure to mycotoxins.

Disturbances in acid-base balance leading to the development of hypertension are currently gaining increased attention among researchers. Perturb acid-base balance characterized by metabolic acidosis has been demonstrated in hypertensive animals and humans. Research suggests that acid-base changes are not only the consequences of elevated blood pressure but can precede the development of hypertension. However, no exact mechanism has been identified to link acid-base imbalance with alterations in blood pressure. The kidney proximal tubule is the major site for maintaining normal bicarbonate concentrations which is an important component of acid-base balance. Acid-base transporter proteins in the renal proximal tubule such as Na+/HCO-3?cotransporters, Na+/H+ exchangers, and anion-exchangers play important roles in controlling acid secretion, ammonia production and bicarbonate reabsorption for maintaining acid-base balance. It is well known that sodium retention in the renal tubules leads to increase in blood volume and consequently increases in blood pressure. Therefore, it is the purpose of this review to discuss the role of sodium-coupled acid-base transporters in regulating proximal tubular sodium retention and controlling blood pressure homeostasis. We will also focus on the capacity of local mediators;angiotensin II, cortisol, prosta-glandin and aldosterone, to regulate acid-base and blood pressure homeostasis.

Nosocomial infections are frequent complications of hospitalization, caused by opportunistic pathogens that gain access to hosts undergoing invasive procedures, such as surgery, intubation, and placement of deep vein lines. Nosocomial infections in animal hospitals can infect other animals, as well as be transmitted to human personnel. enterobacter is a genus of common gram-negative bacteria, which can be associated with antibiotic resistant hospital infections. Because of an outbreak in antibiotic resistance in the genus, we decided to investigate five years of enterobacter infections in the Large Animal Services of the Lois Bates Acheson Veterinary Teaching Hospital (LBAVTH) at Oregon State University. The demographics from 37 enterobacter-infected patients of the LBAVTH were obtained from charts and analyzed. The identified clusters of infections suggested possible patient-environment sources of infection. The environment of the hospital was sampled in an attempt to determine the source of infection. Although enterobacter was not isolated, three of the collected samples contained bacteria with resistance to third-generation cephalosporins. enterobacter isolates from six of the 37 patients were further analyzed for presence of specific eSBL resistance genes. All six of the isolates harbored multiple extended-spectrum beta-lactamase genes, i.e., CTX-M-15, TeM-80, SHV-2 and AmpC. In summary, enterobacter infection in the veterinary hospital was caused by beta-lactam-resistant strains, carrying eSBL-resistant genes. Veterinary hospital personnel should be aware of the potential for transmission, to both humans and animals, of eSBL-gene-containing bacteria.

Perception of Post-Secondary Students on environmental Practices in Selected Communities in the Philippines: Implications to Climate Change Action

＜正＞ T cell therapy of cancer involves the passive transfer of cells, that directly or indirectly, mediate tumor regression. Animal studies have defined many principles required for the successful application of T cell therapies. However, in humans, there are still several obstacles to overcome to make this approach applicable. These obstacles include isolating the appropriate tumor reactive T cells from the tumor - bearing host and being able to expand these cells ex vivo in sufficient quanitities for effective therapy. Our laboratory has focused on isolating tumor reactive T cells from lymph nodes that either drain sites of tumor or are primed by tumor vaccines. We have been able to elicit T cells to non - immunogenic tumors in our animal models by combining a bacterial adjuvant admixed with tumor cells and administered as a vaccine. Utilizing anti - CD3 mAb as an activating agent, we can expand tumor - primed lymph node cells in vitro for subsequent use in adoptive immunotherapy. CD8 + T cells with effector function appear to be preferentially expanded by this method.

Climate change contributes to disasters in the Philippines. Most human activities have had negative consequences on the environment, exacerbating global warming. humans contribute to climate change and global warming by burning fossil fuels, cutting down trees, engaging in improper waste disposal, using electricity, and driving a car. This study assessed the environmental practices of communities in Nueva ecija, Philippines, and their implications for climate change. Respondents were selected using convenient sampling. A questionnaire delivered online was used to elicit their responses then analyzed the data using SPSS. This study revealed that most post-secondary students do not litter but sometimes burn their trash in an open dump. Most of them used LPG as their primary source of fuel for cooking. Rice production is always the same as producing food waste in food production. Garden waste was sometimes produced. Plastic containers are commonly produced as recyclable wastes. They often dispose of wastes in controlled and regulated open dumpsites by their municipality or city. Due to the pandemic, special wastes like face masks and face shields are disposed of daily. Generally, despite no littering behavior, the respondents never burned their trash or threw it on any body of water. They perceived to disagree that these daily community activities contribute to climate change. Lastly, less than half of them affirmed that there are initiative programs at the barangay level to lessen and eliminate community activities that cause climate change.

Atherosclerosis is the primary pathophysiological cause of heart disease and cerebrovascular disease. It is responsible for more than 20% of deaths worldwide each year. Treatments for atherosclerosis may include lifestyle changes, drugs, and medical procedures or surgery. There is a need for a rapid and effective treatment for this disease. In 1976, it was hypothesized that a multifunctional plasma delipidation process when applied to hyperlipidemic patients would lead to rapid regression of atherosclerosis. The procedure has now been applied to a variety of non-primates, primates and humans. In all models studied, large quantities of antiatherogenic lipoprotein particles were generated that led to the mechanisms of reverse cholesterol transport. Trends to regression and actual regression of atherosclerosis have now been reported using a specific plasma delipidation process consisting of lipid extraction from plasma with mixtures of butanol and ethers.
