Phytoplankton changes during SE monsoonal period in the Lembeh Strait of North Sulawesi, Indonesia,from 2012 to 2015

Phytoplankton species composition and abundance in the Lembeh Strait waters was studied in four cruises of April 2013, May 2014, June 2012 and October 2015, during the period of monsoon transition time of SE monsoon.With data obtained the seasonal alternations of phytoplankton community structures and its driving factors were discussed. A total of 416 taxa belonging to 5 classes of phytoplankton were recorded in the four month surveys.Phytoplankton density was averaged 2 348 cell/L and diatoms and dinoflagellates had the most diversified species. Cyanobacterium was characterized by its low species numbers but high abundance in the waters of Lembeh Strait. Total phytoplankton abundance occurred low in April and October in the monsoon transition period and it raised high in May and June during the SE monsoon. Frequently occurred species were pelagic diatoms in addition to cyanobacterium Trichodesmium. Abundance and diversity of phytoplankton significantly differed seasonally. The diatoms Thalassionema and Pseudo-nitzschia, and cyanobacterium Trichodesmium contributed most to the community dissimilarities. Due to potentially higher nutrient supply in the south of Lembeh Strait, diatoms and dinoflagellates showed higher densities in the south than in the north of the strait.Though, cyanobacterium preferred distributing much evenly in all waters, it had higher density in the southern Lembeh Strait. Total phytoplankton abundance is quite low compared with the Jakarta Bay and some bays in China. Analysis showed that nutrients from upwelling forced by SE monsoon are the key factor varying the monthly phytoplankton abundances. Due to its primitive nature state, Lembeh water can be an ideal location for the study of pelagic ecosystem under merely the influence of macro environment changes with lower background noise from human activities.

Zooplankton composition and distribution in the Lembeh Strait of North Sulawesi, Indonesia

Based on oceanographic survey data in June 2012 in the Lembeh Strait, the zooplankton ecological characteristics such as species composition, individual abundance, dominant species and distribution were analyzed. The results showed that 183 species(including 4 sp.) had been recognized, most of them belonged to copepoda.Cnidaria followed with 43 species(including 1 sp.) were identified. The average abundance of zooplankton was(150.47±58.91) ind./m3. As to the horizontal distribution, the abundance of the zooplankton was higher in the southern waters than in the northern waters. The dominant species in the study area were Lensia subtiloides,Sagitta enflata, Lucifer intermedius, Oikopleura rufescens, Diphyes chamissoni, Creseis acicula, Subeucalanus subcrassus, Temora discaudata, Aglaura hemistoma, Doliolum denticulatum, Canthocalanus pauper, Oikopleura longicauda and Nanomia bijuga. Zooplankton biodiversity indexes were higher in study area than previous study in the other regions. The findings from this study provide important baseline information for future research and monitoring programs.

材料于2012年6月在印度尼西亚比通海峡水域采集,调查区共设19站,经对38份样品分析,鉴定出48种水母,其中有2个花水母新种:幼芽伪帽水母Pseudotiara gemmifera Lin,XuetHuang,sp.nov.和比通真囊水母Euphysora bitungensis Xu,Huanget Guo,sp.nov.,对新种形态特征进行了绘图和描述,并讨论其与同属其它种主要特征的比较。模式标本保存于国家海洋局第三海洋研究所。

Tidal triggering of seismicity in the region of Palu, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia

This paper investigates the correlation between tidal stress and earthquakes for periods ranging from hours to months in the limited zone of the Palu region(Central Sulawesi,Indonesia).Through Schuster and binomial tests,we examined the relation between the seismicity(time density of seismic events)and tidal potential arising from the Moon and Sun,using all tidal components simultaneously and focusing on the estimation of specific terms.The results show significant correlations between the seismicity and tidal potential for S2(0.5 d)and O1(1.075 d)tidal components in the case of solely isolated earthquake events,particularly for shallow earthquakes.Meanwhile,there is a strong relationship between aftershocks and tidal components larger than the Mf period(13.661 d).Finally,the analysis of the temporal variation of the earthquake-tide relation reveals an optimal correlation for about six years before the 2018 great Palu earthquake.The correlation becomes insignificant afterwards.

Prevalence and risk factors associated with tuberculosis mortality in Brunei Darussalam

Objective:To determine the prevalence and risk factors associated with tuberculosis mortality in Brunei Darussalam and to explore its underlying causes.Methods:A retrospective cohort study was conducted where data on socio-demographics,clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes of all tuberculosis patients registered at the National tuberculosis Coordinating Centre between 2013 and 2017 were collected.Overall tuberculosis mortality and the proportion of tuberculosis-related deaths were calculated.Logistic regression analysis was used to determine the risk factors of tuberculosis mortality when compared to those who are cured and/or completed tuberculosis treatment.Results:Of 1107 tuberculosis cases,99 died,giving an overall tuberculosis mortality rate of 8.9%(95%CI 7.4%-10.8%).Significant risk factors associated with tuberculosis mortality were age≥40 years(adjusted OR for 40-59 years was 3.89;95%CI 1.13-1.69;adjusted OR for≥60 years was 22.3;95%CI 7.27-91.9,using 20-39 years as reference),female sex(adjusted OR 1.74;95%CI 1.09-2.79),having renal disease(adjusted OR 25.7;95%CI 2.82-191.50)and having any cancers(adjusted OR 3.61;95%CI 1.26-10.00).The majority(75.8%)of the recorded deaths were not related to tuberculosis.Conclusions:Tuberculosis patients who were older than 40 years,female,and having renal disease and any cancer will need close monitoring in their management program to prevent tuberculosis mortality.Clinicians should also focus on other non-tuberculosis aspects of the patient’s medical history.

技术的快速发展导致互联网和社交媒体用户数量的增加,引发了商业世界的竞争,其中之一就是纳入中小微企业的业务,是一项与企业家精神相关的活动,是由个人或公司管理的企业。中小微企业在推动印尼经济发展方面发挥着重要作用,并对地区和国家收入做出重大贡献。随着时代的发展,商人被鼓励在网上开展业务,他们通过网站、网上市场、社交网络和社交媒体推销他们的产品或服务。对此,政府采取了多种方式让中小微企业在这个数字时代生存下来,其中之一是“Go Online”计划,鼓励中小微企业在网上销售其产品或服务,或通常称为网上商店。在印度尼西亚拥有众多用户的社交媒体之一是Instagram,其中大多数Instagram用户是年龄在18至34岁之间的男性和女性,这可能是在线商店业务的合适目标市场。虽然网店生意看似轻松,但网店之间的竞争在所难免。商人采取各种方式来维持他们的业务,其中之一就是选择正确的营销策略。目前,名人代言是商人在这个数字平台上普遍选择的营销策略之一。然而,这种营销策略有几个风险,可能是其实施失败的因素,即成本太贵、过程太短、名人做事不认真、其他问题。当然这就提出了一个问题,这种营销策略真的有效吗?对网上商店的收入有何影响?总之,根据这项研究的结果,可以看出名人代言对于印度尼西亚中小微企业成员的在线企业来说是一种相当有效的营销策略,从结果中可以看出他们的收入增加了,追随者和潜在买家的数量也有所增加,这对商店的利润有长期影响。尽管存在缺陷,但可以通过事先观察要使用的预期背书人或使用Vis CAP方法来克服这些缺陷。政府在为印度尼西亚的中小微企业进行在线计划咨询时,将考虑这项研究的结果,以提供产品营销解决方案。

and pili genes are also investigated.Methods:This multicentre,prospective,observational study is conducted in seven major tertiary hospitals in Malaysia among non-pregnant adults.Simultaneously,a retrospective study is conducted in the selected hospitals with similar approaches.GBS isolates are subjected to phenotyping,serotyping by multiplex PCR,antimicrobial susceptibility testing and PCR-detection of GBS virulence and pilus genes.Seven housekeeping genes are amplified and sequenced for multi-locus sequence typing.Discussion:Findings from the study may contribute to the management of clinical practice to diagnose and prevent GBS related diseases in a timely manner.Prudent use of antibiotics is encouraged by monitoring antimicrobial resistance.

Mineralogy and geochemistry of siliciclastic Miocene Cuddalore Formation,Cauvery Basin,South India:Implications for provenance and paleoclimate

The Cuddalore Formation of the Cauvery Basin received siliciclastic detritus from inland areas of the Southern Granulite Terrain(SGT).It represented continental-fluvial sedimentation in the eastern continental margin of South India during the Miocene.Indian Summer Monsoon was thought to be initiated in the early Miocene and intensified during the middle Miocene causing major climatic shifts in the Indian subcontinent.In the present work,detailed mineralogical and geochemical studies on the siliciclastic Cuddalore Formation have been carried out to understand the provenance and paleoclimatic conditions during the Miocene.The paleocurrent direction,textural immaturity and framework detrital modes of sandstones suggest rapid uplift of basement and sediment source from nearby Madras Block of SGT.Various diagnostic immobile trace element ratios such as Th/Sc,Co/Th,La/Sc,La/Co suggest a tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite-charnockite provenance,and somewhat more felsic composition of source area compared to the present upper continental crust(UCC).Rare earth element mixed model suggests that sediments were dominantly(80%)sourced from felsic charnockite,with a minor contribution(20%)from mafic granulites.Higher abundance of advanced-weathering products like kaolinite,very high(>98)chemical index of alteration(CIA)values,severe depletion of mobile elements(Ca,Na,K,Mg,Ba,Rb)in comparison to UCC,significantly higher a Mg,a Ca,a Na,a K,a Sr and a Ba values(higher than the unity),all suggest the extreme chemical weathering in source terrain and/or in the sedimentary basin.Calculations based on CIA show high average surface temperature between 29.3℃and 29.5℃and high mean annual precipitation ranging from 2339 mm/yr to 2467 mm/yr.The geochemical data are consistent with the paleogeographic position of the depositional basin(Cauvery Basin)and suggest the deposition of Cuddalore sediments(the Cuddalore Formation)in a nearequatorial location under a warm climate condition with abundant monsoonal precipitation.

Iron deficiency anemia is one of the most common micronutrient deficient conditions around the globe with various consequences,including the weakened immune system.Quercetin is widely distributed bioflavonoid;it has been debated for its dual roles in iron regulation.Quercetin-iron interaction in the body is a complex mechanism which has not been completely understood.The present study aimed to investigate the effect of quercetin on iron supplementation in iron deficiency anemia and on i NOS expression in splenic macrophages.The rat model of iron deficiency anemia was induced by feeding low iron diet to weanling rats for 20 days.The animals were then administered with ferrous sulfate,quercetin,and their combination for 30 days.Blood parameters,histopathological analysis,iron storage,CD68,i NOS and SLC40 expression in rat spleen were investigated.Our results showed that quercetin regulated iron absorption,despite SLC40 down-expression,indicating possible alternate route of iron transport,and that quercetin modulated i NOS production in splenic macrophages..

Colonization features of marine biofilm-dwelling protozoa in Chinese coastal waters of the Yellow Sea

Colonization features of biofilm-dwelling protozoa,especially ciliates,are routinely used as a useful tool for marine bioassessment.In this review,we summarize some of these features to develop an optimal sampling strategy for using biofilmdwelling protozoa as bioindicators of marine water quality.We focus on the utility of:(1)diversity in dices to analyze the colonizahon features of biofilm-dwelling protozoa for monitoring marine water quality;(2)MacArthur-Wilson and logistic equation models to determine spatio-temporal variations in colonization dynamics;and(3)homogeneity in taxonomic breadth of biofilm-dwelling protozoa during the process of colonization.The main findings are that:(1)the colonization dynamics of biofilm-dwelling protozoa are similar at depths of 1-5 m in spring and autumn;(2)temporal variability was well fitted to the MacArthur-Wilson and logistic models(P<0.05);and(3)species composition reached an equilibrium after a colonization period of 10-14 days in spring and autumn,but this took less time in the summer and more time in the winter.Ellipse-plotting tests demonstrated spatial variability in homogeneity in taxonomic structure of the ciiiate communities at different depths in the water column,with high levels at 1 m and 2 m and lower levels at 3.5 m and 5 m.Thus,the findings of this review suggest that the colonization dynamics of biofilin-dwelling protozoa may be influenced by different depths and seasons in coastal waters and 1-2 m in spring and autumn may be optimal sampling strategy for bioassessment on large spatial/temporal scales in marine ecosystems.
