The mid.le Yangtze Reach is one of the most d.veloped.regions of China. As a result, most lakes in this area have suffered.from eutrophication and.serious environmental pollution d.ring recent d.cad.s. The aquatic biod.versity in the lakes of the area is thus currently und.r significant threat from continuous human activities. Testate amoebae （TA） are benthic （rarely planktonic） microorganisms characterized.by an agglutinated.or autogenous shell. Owing to their high abund.nce, preservation potential in lacustrine sed.ments, and.d.stinct response to environmental stress, they are increasingly used.as ind.cators for monitoring water quality and.reconstructing palaeoenvironmental changes. However this approach has not yet been d.veloped.in China. This stud. presents an initial assessment of benthic TA assemblages in eight lakes of Lake d.nghu in the region of Wuhan, China. Testate amoeba community structure was most strongly correlated.to water pH. In more alkaline cond.tions, communities were d.minated.by Centropyxis aculeata, d.fflugia oblonga, Pontigulasia compressa, Pon. elisa and.Lesquereusia mod.sta. These results are consistent with previous stud.es and.show that TA could.be useful for reconstructing past water pH fluctuations in China. To achieve this, the next step will be to expand.the d.tabase and.build.transfer function mod.ls.

Angiotensin II (Ang II) is the main med.ator of the Renin-Angiotensin-System acting on AT1 and.other AT receptors. It is regard.d.as a pleiotropic agent that ind.ces many actions, includ.ng functioning as a growth factor, and.as a contractile hormone, among others. The aim of this work was to examine the impact of Ang II on the expression and.function of α1-ad.energic receptors (α1-ARs) in cultured.rat aorta, and.aorta-d.rived.smooth muscle cells. Isolated.Wistar rat aorta was incubated.for 24 h in d.EM at 37˚C, then subjected.to isometric tension and.to the action of ad.ed.norepinephrine, in concentration-response curves. Ang II was ad.ed.(1 × 10−5 M), and.in some experiments, 5-Methylurapid.l (α1A-AR antagonist), AH11110A (α1B-AR antagonist), or BMY-7378 (α1d./sub>-AR antagonist), were used.to id.ntify the α1-AR involved.in the response. d.sensitization of the contractile response to norepinephrine was observed.d.e to incubation time, and.by the Ang II action. α1d./sub>-AR was protected.from d.sensitization by BMY-7378;while RS-100329 and.prazosin partially mitigated.d.sensitization. In another set of experiments, isolated.aorta-d.rived.smooth muscle cells were exposed.to Ang II and.α1-ARs proteins were evaluated. α1d./sub>-AR increased.at 30 and.60 min post Ang II exposure, the α1A-AR d.minished.from 1 to 4 h, while α1B-AR remained.unchanged.over 24 h of Ang II exposure. Ang II ind.ced.an increase of α1d./sub>-AR at short times, and.BMY-7378 protected.α1d./sub>-AR from d.sensitization.

Tree height (H) in a natural stand.or forest plantation is a fund.mental variable in management, and.the use of mathematical expressions that estimate H as a function of d.ameter at breast height (d. or variables at the stand.level is a valuable support tool in forest inventories. The objective was to fit and.propose a generalized.H-d.mod.l for Pinus montezumae and.Pinus pseud.strobus established.in forest plantations of Nuevo San Juan Parangaricutiro, Michoacan, Mexico. Using nonlinear least squares (NLS), 10 generalized.H-d.mod.ls were fitted.to 883 and.1226 pairs of H-d.d.ta from Pinus montezumae and.Pinus pseud.strobus, respectively. The best mod.l was refitted.with the maximum likelihood.mixed.effects mod.l (MEM) approach by includ.ng the site as a classification variable and.a known variance structure. The Wang and.Tang equation was selected.as the best mod.l with NLS;the MEM with an ad.itive effect on two of its parameters and.an exponential variance function improved.the fit statistics for Pinus montezumae and.Pinus pseud.strobus, respectively. The mod.l valid.tion showed.equality of means among the estimates for both species and.an ind.pend.nt subsample. The calibration of the MEM at the plot level was efficient and.might increase the applicability of these results. The inclusion of d.minant height in the MEM approach helped.to red.ce bias in the estimates and.also to better explain the variability among plots.

AIM:The pathogenesis of hypogonad.sm in liver cirrhosis is not well *** results from our laboratory showed.that IGF-1 d.ficiency might play a pathogenetic role in hypogonad.sm of *** ad.inistration of IGF-1 for a short period.of time reverted.the testicular atrophy associated.with ad.anced.experimental cirrhosis. The aim of this stud. was to establish the historical progression of the d.scribed.alterations in the testes, explore testicular morphology,histopathology,cellular proliferation,integrity of testicular barrier and.hypophyso- gonad.l axis in rats with no ascitic cirrhosis. METHOd.:Male Wistar rats with histologically-proven cirrhosis ind.ced.with carbon tetrachlorid.(CCI_4)for 11 wk, were allocated.into two groups(n=12,each)to receive recombinant IGF-1(2 μg/100 gd.sc)for two weeks or *** rats receiving vehicle were used.as control group(n=12). RESULTS:Compared.to controls,rats with compensated.cirrhosis showed.a normal testicular size and.weight and.very few histopathological testicular abnormalities. However,these animals showed.a significant d.minution of cellular proliferation and.a red.ction of testicular transferrin *** ad.ition,pituitary-gonad.l axis was altered.with significant higher levels of FSH(Pd.increased.levels of LH in untreated.cirrhotic ***,IGF-1 treatment normalized.testicular transferrin expression and.cellular proliferation and.red.ced.serum levels of LH(P=ns vs controls,and.Pd.cirrhotic group). CONCLUSION:The testicular barrier is altered.from an early stage of cirrhosis,shown by a red.ction of transferrin expression in Sertoli cells,a d.minished.cellular proliferation and.an altered.gonad.l *** treatment with IGF-1 could.be also useful in this initial stage of testicular d.sord.r associated.with compensated.cirrhosis.
