Carbon micro-and nanoelectrodes fabricated by carbon microelectromechanical systems(carbon MEMS)are increasingly used in various biosensors and supercapacitor *** modification of as-produced carbon electrodes with oxygen functional groups is sometimes necessary for biofunctionalization or to improve electrochemical ***,conventional surface treatment methods have a limited ability for selective targeting of parts of a surface area for surface modification without using complex photoresist ***,we report microplasma direct writing as a simple,low-cost,and low-power technique for site-selective plasma patterning of carbon MEMS electrodes with oxygen *** microplasma direct writing,a high-voltage source generates a microplasma discharge between a microelectrode tip and a target surface held at atmospheric *** our setup,water vapor acts as an ionic precursor for the carboxylation and hydroxylation of carbon surface *** direct writing increases the oxygen content of an SU-8-derived pyrolytic carbon surface from~3 to 27%while reducing the carbon-to-oxygen ratio from 35 to ***,a microplasma treatment increases the number of carbonyl,carboxylic,and hydroxyl functional groups with the largest increase observed for carboxylic ***,water microplasma direct writing improves the hydrophilicity and the electrochemical performance of carbon electrodes with a contact-angle change from~90°to~20°,a reduction in the anodic peak to cathodic peak separation from 0.5 V to 0.17 V,and a 5-fold increase in specific capacitance from 8.82 mF∙cm−2 to 46.64 mF∙cm^(−2).The plasma direct-writing technology provides an efficient and easy-to-implement method for the selective surface functionalization of carbon MEMS electrodes for electrochemical and biosensor applications.

AIM To study implications of measuring quality indicators on training and trainees' performance in pediatric colonoscopy in a low-volume training *** We reviewed retrospectively the performance of pediatric colonoscopies in a training center in Malaysia over 5 years(January 2010-December 2015), benchmarked against five quality indicators: appropriateness of indications, bowel preparations, cecum and ileal examination rates, and complications. The European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy guideline for pediatric endoscopy and North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition training guidelines were used as *** Median(± SD) age of 121 children [males = 74(61.2%)] who had 177 colonoscopies was 7.0(± 4.6) years. On average, 30 colonoscopies were performed each year(range: 19-58). Except for investigations of abdominal pain(21/177, 17%), indications for colonoscopies were appropriate in the remaining 83%. Bowel preparation was good in 87%. One patient(0.6%) with severe Crohn's disease had bowel perforation. Cecum examination and ileal intubation rate was 95% and 68.1%. Ileal intubation rate was significantly higher in diagnosing or assessing inflammatory bowel disease(IBD) than non-IBD(72.9% vs 50.0%; P = 0.016). Performance of four trainees was consistent throughout the study period. Average cecum and ileal examination rate among trainees were 97% and 77%.CONCLUSION Benchmarking against established guidelines helps units with a low-volume of colonoscopies to identify area for further improvement.

The use of mobile phone technologies in the education sector is getting more attention nowadays. This is due to the advancement of technologies equipped in majority of the mobile phones which makes the devices become more capable of supporting the learning and teaching activities. Mobile learning （m-learning） is a learning tool which can be run on mobile devices. It can be considered as an enhancement to the electronic learning （e-learning）. M-learning overcomes several limitations of e-learning especially in term of mobility. It provides more independent way of learning whereby learners can use the application to do the learning activities at anytime and any place. However, as with other learning and teaching applications, applications to be developed for mobile learning must also be developed based on certain learning theories and guidelines in order for them to be effective as well as usable. Therefore, in this paper, the development process of a mobile learning course content application called Mobile System Analysis and Design （MOSAD） as a revision tool will be shared and its testing＇s conduct and results will also be presented and discussed. MOSAD was developed with the content of a topic from the System Analysis and Design （SAD） course conducted at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS （UTP）. A heuristic test involving 5 experts in the area of Human Computer Interaction （HCI） were conducted after the first version of MOSAD was completed to strengthen its functionality and usability, followed by a Post Test Quasi Experimental Design which was conducted to 116 UTP second year students who took the SAD course to test the effectiveness and usability of MOSAD after it was revised. As a result from the post test, the students who had used MOSAD （66 out of the 116 students） as their revision tool for answering ten quiz questions obtained a mean score of 7.7576 as compared to 5.160 obtained by the other group of students （50 out of the 116 students） who used traditional meth

Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase(MTHFR)deficiency is the most common genetic cause of hyperhomocysteinemia,which has been implicated in the etiology of recurrent spontaneous abortion(RSA).This study was designed to investigate the association between two single nucleotide polymorphisms(SNP)(rs1801133[C677T]and rs1801131[A1298C])in the MTHFR gene and RSA,in *** two SNPs were selected as these polymorphisms have a different effect on the activity and stability of the enzyme,and significantly diverse effects have been reported in relation to the association with *** approval was acquired from the IRB at King Saud University(KKUH),Saudi Arabia,and written informed consent was obtained from each *** study group comprised of 100 Saudi women with unexplained RSA and 100 age-matched controls,both attending KKUH for a routine *** was drawn in EDTA tubes,and DNA was *** was conducted using TaqMan SNP genotyping assay *** frequency of the T allele of C677T was 0.165 in patients and 0.17 in *** frequencies for CC,CT and TT genotypes were 70%,27%and 3%,respectively in RSA,and 71%,24%and 5%,respectively,in the controls(p>0.05).For the A1298C polymorphism,the C allele frequencies were 0.345 in patients and 0.28 in controls,while genotype frequencies for AA,AC and CC genotypes were 44%,43%,and 13%,respectively,in patients,and 54%,36%,and 10%,respectively,in controls(p>0.05).The frequency of CC genotype and C allele of A1298C were higher in the patients with RSA,but not significantly,while C677T genotypes and allele frequencies did not differ between patients and *** results suggested that MTHFR gene polymorphisms are population-specific and may not associate with RSA in Saudi women.

Objective: To compare the in vitro antioxidant capacity of a diatom, Chaetoceros calcitrans(C. calcitrans) extracted using six types of ***: Each extract was evaluated in terms of extraction yield, total carotenoid,fucoxanthin content, total phenolic and antioxidant capacities(DPPH and ABTS +scavenging activity and iron chelating activity).Results: The methanol extract exhibited the highest yield [(22.71 ± 0.96) g/100 g dry weight(DW)], total carotenoid [(4.46 ± 0.36) mg/g DW], total phenolic [(2.49 ± 0.08) mg gallic acid equivalents/g DW] and second highest fucoxanthin content [(2.08 ± 0.03) mg fucoxanthin/g DW] as compared to other solvent extracts. Methanolic extract also exhibited significantly higher(P < 0.05) scavenging(DPPH, ABTS +) and iron chelating ***: Methanol was the recommended solvent for the production of antioxidant rich extract from C. calcitrans. Both carotenoids and phenolic acids were found to be positively correlated to the antioxidant capacities of C. calcitrans. Lead bioactives confirmed by subsequent high performance liquid chromatography studies were fucoxanthin, gallic acid and protocatechuic acid.

In this paper, a modified implicit Kirk-multistep iteration scheme and a strong convergence result for a general class of maps in a normed linear space was established. It was also shown that the convergence of this iteration scheme is equivalent to the convergency of some other implicit Kirk-type iteration (implicit Kirk-Noor, implicit Kirk-Ishikawa and implicit Kirk-Mann iterations) for the same class of maps. Some numerical examples were considered to show that the equivalence of convergence results to the fixed point is true. The results unify most equivalence results in literature.

Pulmonary embolism (PE), with the incidence of about 60 per 100000 annually, can be a life-threatening disease if it is not treated promptly. It has been estimated that some 10% of PE patients die within the first hour of the event. Untreated PE has a mortality of about 30%. PE is a condition that is treatable if suspected and diagnosed early. The chest radiograph is still the first investigation that is ordered in patients presenting with cardiorespiratory symptoms or symptoms suggestive of PE. The CXR is also helpful in identifying or excluding other conditions or diagnoses. Thus, knowing and understanding some of the more specific CXR signs can be useful. We suggest that physicians to be aware of and utilize CXR findings such as Palla's sign, Westermark sign and Hamptons hump to help with the diagnosis of PE and to exclude other conditions that can mimic venous thrombo-embolism. Even if these signs are not common, their presence, even in an unsuspected patient without a high pretest probability of PE, should prompt further investigations such as a D-dimer test, lung scintigraphy or computed tomography pulmonary angiography as required.
