Overweight and obesity in young adults with patellofemoral pain:Impact on functional capacity and strength

Purpose:this study aimed to(a)investigate the proportion of overweight/obesity in a cohort of young adults with patellofemoral pain(PfP)and(b)explore the association of body mass index(BMI),body fat,and lean mass with functional capacity and hip and knee strength in people with ***:We included a mixed-sex sample of young adults(18-35 years old)with PfP(n=100).Measurements for BMI,percentage of body fat,and lean mass(assessed by bioelectrical impedance)were *** capacity was assessed by the Anterior Knee Pain Scale,plank test,and single-leg hop *** of the knee extensors,knee flexors,and hip abductors was evaluated isometrically using an isokinetic *** proportion of overweight/obesity was calculated based on *** association between BMI,body fat,and lean mass and functional capacity and strength was investigated using partial correlations,followed by hierarchical regression analysis,adjusted for covariates(sex,bilateral pain,and current pain level).Results:A total of 38%of our cohort had their BMI categorized as overweight/*** BMI was associated with poor functional capacity(ΔR^(2)=0.06-0.12,pth knee flexion strength only(ΔR^(2)=0.04,p=0.030).Higher body fat was associated with poor functional capacity(ΔR^(2)=0.05-0.15,p≤0.015)and reduced strength(ΔR^(2)=0.15-0.23,pted with poor functional capacity(ΔR^(2)=0.04-0.13,p≤0.032)and reduced strength(ΔR^(2)=0.29-0.31,pfat,and lean mass should be considered in the assessment and management of young people with PfP because it may be detrimental to function and strength.

Optical-resolution photoacoustic microscopy(OR-PAM)has demonstrated high-spatial-resolution imaging of optical absorption in biological *** date,most OR-PAM systems rely on mechanical scanning with confocally aligned optical excitation and ultrasonic detection,limiting the wide-field imaging speed of these *** several multifocal OR-PA(MfOR-PA)systems have attempted to address this limitation,they are hindered by the complex design in a constrained physical ***,we present a two-dimensional(2D)MfOR-PAM system that utilizes a 2D microlens array and an acoustic ergodic *** a single-element ultrasonic transducer,this system can detect PA signals generated from 400 optical foci in parallel and then raster scan the optical foci patterns to form an MfOR-PAM *** system improves the imaging resolution of an acoustic ergodic relay system from 220 to 13μm and enables 400-folds shorter scanning time than that of a conventional OR-PAM system at the same resolution and laser repetition *** demonstrated the imaging ability of the system with both in vitro and in vivo experiments.

We discuss some key aspects of our recent theoretical work on water reorientation dynamics,which is important in a wide range of phenomena,including aqueous phase chemical reactions,protein folding,and drug binding to proteins and DNA. It is shown that,contrary to the standard conception that these dynamics are diffusional,the reorientation of a water molecule occurs by sudden,large amplitude angular jumps. the mechanism involves the exchange of one hydrogen bond for another by the reorienting water,and the process can be fruitfully viewed as a chemical reaction. the results for reorientation times,which can be well described analytically,are discussed in the context of the molecular level interpretation of recent ultrafast infrared spectroscopic results,focusing on the concepts of structure making/breaking and solvent 'icebergs'.

Acupuncture in living liver and kidney donors: a feasibility study

Objective: the purpose of this study was to test the feasibility of integrating acupuncture into the routine care of living liver and kidney donors during the process of donation and ***: this is a pilot study on the feasibility of a brief acupuncture intervention for living liver and kidney donors. Participants received acupuncture immediately prior to organ donation surgery, every day as inpatients, while recovering from donation, and at a 2-week follow-up. Prior to surgery, questionnaires were completed on acupuncture outcome expectations and the State–trait Anxiety Inventory. After participating, those who received acupuncture provided feedback. following the active intervention, a retrospective chart review was conducted, using donors who did not receive acupuncture as a comparison ***: forty donor candidates were approached and recruited, 32 consented and ultimately 25 donors participated in the acupuncture intervention(15 of kidney, 10 of liver), 68% female, and 88% Caucasian;only one had prior experience with acupuncture. Participants received an average of 4 sessions while inpatient(range 2–8). those who expected acupuncture to be more helpful prior to the intervention reported lower inpatient pain scores(P = 0.04). Qualitative feedback from patients was predominantly positive,indicating acupuncture was helpful for relaxation and pain. However, a few patients reported feeling overburdened during postdonation recovery, and that the study was viewed as additional ***: Preliminary findings suggest it is feasible to integrate acupuncture into inpatient recovery for living organ donation. tailoring interventions to the specific needs of patients is important to address ongoing concerns. Larger studies are needed to further ascertain benefits of peri-operative acupuncture.

Amphidinium species are amongst the most abundant benthic dinoflagellates in marine intertidal sandy *** of them are able to produce a variety of bioactive compounds that can have both harmful effects and pharmaceutical *** diversity of Amphidinium in shallow waters along the Chinese coast was investigated by isolating single cells from sand,coral,and macroalgal samples collected from 2012 to *** morphologies were subjected to examination using light microscopy(LM)and scanning electron microscopy(SEM).A total of 74 Amphidinium strains were morphologically identified,belonging to 11 species:***,***,***,***,***,***,***,***,***,***,***,as well as an undefined *** last seven species have not been previously reported in Chinese *** carterae subcladesⅠ,Ⅱ,andⅣwere found in the South China Sea,while subcladeⅢwas only found in the Yellow *** body scales were observed on the surface of subcladesⅢ and Ⅳ,supporting the idea that *** might contain several different *** subunit ribosomal RNA(LSU rRNA)sequencesbased phylogeny revealed two groups(GroupsⅠandⅡ)within Amphidinium,which is consistent with the relative position of sulcus(in touch with cingulum or not).In addition,large differences in morphology and molecular phylogeny between ***(the type species of Amphidinium)and other species,suggest that a subdivision of Amphidinium might be *** pigment profiles of all available strains were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC).Eleven pigments,including peridinin,diadinoxanthin,diatoxanthin,pheophorbide(and pheophorbide a),antheraxanthin,β-carotene,and four different chlorophylls were *** high pheophorbide/pheophorbide a ratio in Amphidinium implies that it may be a good candidate as a natural source of photosensitizers,a well-known anticancer drug.

Structure evolution of the fe_(3)C/fe interface mediated by cementite decomposition in cold-deformed pearlitic steel wires

Cold-drawn pearlitic steel wire is irreplaceably used in industry owing to its outstanding mechanical property which is dominated by the cementite/ferrite(fe_(3)C/fe) interfaces in the material. However, the fine structures of the fe3C/fe interfaces in the deformed wires are less known to date. In this work, transmission electron microscopic investigation was performed on the atomic structures of the interfaces with the Isaichev orientation relationship(OR) in the wires with progressive deformation strains. In addition to the effect of the dislocation/interface interactions, this work revealed that the deformation-induced partial decomposition of cementite plays an important role in the interface reconstruction during deformation. the interfacial carbon vacancies generated by cementite decomposition and particularly, the amorphization of cementite layers in the sample with ε > 1 could effectively annihilated the interfacial dislocations and consequently relaxed the interfacial stress. the correlations between the interface structure changes and the mechanical properties of the wires were discussed.
